Let’s Stop With The Pink Ribbons

I will be boycotting any Komen for the Cure branded product and here's why. Breast Cancer is not some corporation's product to be defended in court. It is a disease. When Komen introduced the "pink ribbon" to raise the awareness of breast cancer, that was a public good. It was an act to encourage women to be aware of breast cancer. All women. The short-sighted, and hastily retracted, decision to eliminate funding for breast cancer screenings through Planned Parenthood indicates that Komen doesn't care about raising the awareness about breast cancer anymore, or helping increase the healthier choices women can make.

When an organiztion rakes in $93 million a year, and sends out $700,000 a year for breast cancer screening to Planned Parenthood. By Komen's own reports:

"During the past five years, Komen Affiliate grants to Planned Parenthood have paid for the following: Breast cancer and breast health education for nearly 160,000 women, 139,000 clinical breast exams, 4,866 mammograms, detection of 177 breast cancers."

When an organization stops doing the things that it was founded to do, then it should stop operating. Komen's lawsuits against other charities and its decision defund breast cancer screenings in the way that it has is enough for me to say no more passive endorsement of pink ribbon products.
