The Truth About Trash And Nimbys
June 23rd, 2008 · 62 Comments
Presumably people who are interested in public policy should know how our local government works. But sadly George Carlin is right when he said it takes about 8 seconds to determine if someone is stupid. Today’s Hour:
According to Lauricella, the trash-hauling issue has spawned a group called Neighbors For Open Government. A petition is circulating asking the “Common Council to table the two City Carting items on their Tuesday, June 24, agenda and hold a second public hearing next week in order to continue the fact-finding process,” Lauricella said.

The Mystery Funding Of The Early Reading Program
June 23rd, 2008 · 60 Comments
Hartford legislators cut the funding for the Early Reading Success program, based on the lack of success in the program everywhere else but Norwalk. Yet the BOE has funded it. From The Hour:
The Early Reading Success program will continue for Norwalk students next school year through
some carry-over funding from different sources, said School Superintendent Salvatore J. Corda.Legislators decided not to make a budget adjustment for the money when they met on May 7, citing the lack of growth for students in the program and the struggling economy as reasons to stop the funding. Norwalk lost $1 million in funding. However, the Central Office has restored much of the funding for the salaries of all 12 literary specialists and restoring six school positions.

Bond, AAA Bond
June 14th, 2008 · No Comments
No shaken not stirred here. Fitch rated the $34.2 million Bond offering AAA and we’re not talking baseball, which has been very good for Norwalk taxpayers. The Hour reports:
On Friday, Fitch Ratings reaffirmed Norwalk’s AAA bond rating, which allows the city to borrow money at the lowest possible interest rates.
“It’s extremely important to the city. Over 20 years, it’s a big difference between paying 6.5 percent and 6 percent (interest) on a mortgage, and that’s the same thing as giving the city financing,” said Mayor Richard A. Moccia. “It can mean saving a lot of money for taxpayers over time.”

Norwalk Teachers Union Vote
June 5th, 2008 · 131 Comments
Next Tuesday the Norwalk Federation of Teachers is holding a leadership vote, afters school at West Rocks Middle School. Naturally, because it involves West Rocks, we have a controversy a brewing. And the controversy is, teacher mailboxes. Not the kind on our computers, but the kind that sits in the mail room and allows teachers to pass notes, er communications to each other. The mail room, to those of us paying close attention to the Breakfast Club, is usually located adjacent to the teachers lounge, where in the good old days teachers lounged and smoked cigarettes.

Trouble In Anonymous Land
June 3rd, 2008 · 8 Comments
I’ve been geting some calls about comments not appearing on the blog. After extensive testing, it seems that if you type in the word anonymous as the name, it will not go up and get marked as spam. If you use a different name, all is fine. So, for those who are wondering, that is what is going on. I don’t know if I’ll be able to resolve it quickly, so for now pick some other clever name and your comment won’t get trapped by the spam filter.

Taxis, Angels and Hats
June 3rd, 2008 · 94 Comments
It would seem that South Norwalk is the generator of most news these days. And despite the the seemingly endless stream of problems that are discussed, voter turnout in South Norwalk is the lowest in the city. Which then leads me to note, that I’m not all that surprised that news story number one has the headline; No point person so far for Guardian Angels chapter in Norwalk.
