Locally Grown Food A Hot Market

May 4th, 2008 · 5 Comments

The Courant has a great article on the locally grown food movement that’s sweeping Connecticut. Norwalk is in a unique position to not only host many farmer’s markets but also expand the community garden concept was launched at Fodor Farm. From the Courant:

Restaurants wanting to buy their salad greens from Urban Oaks Organic Farm in New Britain are likely to end up on a waiting list.

“For us, the battle is just trying to keep up with the demand,” said Ken Zaborowski, a manager at Urban Oaks. “The last year and a half, everything started picking up.”

Fat Cat Exclusively Norwalk

April 23rd, 2008 · 14 Comments

The allure of Bridgeport drives many a businessman to investigate the opportunities. From the big shot developers like Donald Trump and Steve Wynn to the local entrepreneurs, the untapped downtown remains an enticing citadel in a sea of suburban Fairfield County. But all that glitters is not gold, and Bridgeport’s hard economic realities and entrenched bureaucracy have stymied more than helped development.

Norwalk: We Have Dead Voters

April 22nd, 2008 · 11 Comments

M. Night Shyamalan come on down, not only does Connecticut have a 30% film tax credit but we have the plot all lined up for your next movie. 243 zombies dead people are still on the Norwalk voter rolls according to a study undertaken by the journalism students at UCONN. And not only are they on the rolls, but they voted! Well 11 of them did. Which is totally amazing, because even though my roots trace back to Chicago, where voting is a contact sport, in this modern computerized day, it seems unfathomable that dead people can vote. Robo-Calls And Political Speech

April 22nd, 2008 · 1 Comment

The bill that would end most if not all robo-calls is being tweaked by the judiciary committee yet again. Brian Lockhart reports:

The legislature’s Judiciary Committee yesterday completely rewrote a bill intended to ban political “robo-calls,” fearing the original might not stand up to legal scrutiny.

“We are the Judiciary Committee, and I do think it’s important for us to improve legislation so we think it passes constitutional muster,” state Rep. Gerald Fox II, D-Stamford, said after the 23-14 vote.

Fox is a committee vice chairman.

So-called robo-calls are automated telephone calls with recorded messages targeting voters.

Norwalk: It’s Official, Morelli Downed By Self Inflicted Gun Shot

March 25th, 2008 · 147 Comments

Unfortunately the headline sums up the details that were released at this afternoon’s press conference.  Essentially the ATF is investigating the source of the AK-47 found at the scene as well as determining if the bullets found at the scene and at officer Morelli’s home match, and were fired from the gun that was used.

They are not at a point where they can make a 100% determination that it was suicide or accidental. The investigation is ongoing, and will be thorough. Most of the questions asked at the press conference couldn’t be answered because of the ongoing investigation. None of the details concerning the guns found, shots fired, whether the crime scene was staged could be answered.

Norwalk: Officer Matt Morelli Killed

March 21st, 2008 · 58 Comments

The mood at Norwalk Police headquarters has been grim all day. I hit the 11 am and 4 pm press conferences looking for more details surrounding the fatal shooting of Officer Matthew Morelli. The investigation is still ongoing, and not much in the way of details have been officially released. I can say that just about every media organization has been all over the story thus far. So, what do we know?
