Nascar Open Thread
April 6th, 2008 · 30 Comments
By popular request, its all about Nascar. So what is ailing the Nascar fan base? The Dallas Morning News Reports:
NASCAR research and development usually focuses on minute technical details such as gear ratios and air displacement. Last winter, one topic was fan displacement.
The racing giant took note of increasing numbers of empty seats and declining television ratings during the 2006 and ‘07 Cup seasons. It determined its most ardent supporters were watching six fewer minutes of the races. Research also showed those fans were attending half as many races as they used to – an average of three to five as opposed to six to 10.

April 1, 2008 » U.S. economy rebounds thanks to huge growth of farmers markets
WASHINGTON– In a surprising turn of events, new financial data from the Federal Reserve brought jubilation to both Main Street and Wall Street yesterday as the economic picture for job growth, new business starts and overall household income improved markedly improved since last month. The BET held a hearing on the operating budget cap and not much protest was heard. Just wait till the actual tax increase hits the property tax bill fan. But, the process is what the process is, and the BET did an extraordinary job winnowing the budget down and exploring in great detail the line items across the city budget. Too bad the BOE did not avail itself of the BET finance expertise.
But finance expertise will be the hot topic at the BOE with Opdhal leaving. While Greg Burnett may find it ironic that Opdhal is leaving to take on a finance director position in Oxford, I will simply observe Oxford has been in the news.

Norwalk: Monorail ….
March 19th, 2008 · 2 Comments
Okay, So I <3 monorails. Big reminder was at the Fairfield Theater Company screening of Fahrenheit 451 last night. So much to love about that movie, and also the reminder that the book by Ray Bradbury is this year’s Big Read. Norwalk is kicking off the big read on April 5th, at NCC. But back to the monorail. Las Vegas has one, Austin has one.
And because everything old is new again, here’s a look at how the evil empire back in the day figured planned for this beautiful monorail.
From modern mechanix: yesterday’s tomorrow today:
3>Swift, Overhead Trams to Be “Equipped with Floats to Cross Water Like Boats AMPHIBIAN trains that can whiz above desert sands on an overhead rail, or plunge into the water to ford a river, are contemplated by the Soviet Government in an amazing plan to tap mineral wealth in Turkestan. They are to travel three projected monorail lines of unprecedented design, totaling 332 miles in length and crossing deserts and rivers.
