The race for the Governor’s office in Connecticut is wide open now. M. Jodi Rell announced officially today that she would not be seeking re-election. This means that the scramble for the Republican nomination is wide open. Lieutenant Governor Mike Fedele has said privately that he intends to seek the nomination. But so has Minority Leader of the House Larry Cafero. Then there’s the senator wannabees that might take another look, such as Rob Simmons and even Linda McMahon.
For now though, it looks like Cafero and Fedele are the front runners. Both hail from Fairfield County, leaving them open to a challenge from upstate from someone like Rob Simmons, a former congresscritter.
In looking at presidential election maps, the heart of Republican leaning voters lies in Fairfield County and extends up the valley and through Waterbury. The rest of the state votes overwhelmingly Democratic except for a few spots here and there.
So far on the wires, statements from Chris Healy, Republican party chair, Nancy Dinardo, Democratic party chair, and Dan Malloy, Democratic potential gubernatorial candidate.
There are 37 Governorships open next year. And with Senator Chris Dodd facing a strong challenge from some Republican, the eyes on Connecticut will be national.

Cafero? Really? How long have we been hearing that we never get our fair share of the tax revenues going to Hartford? How long have we been re-electing the same ineffective people who can’t seem to get the job done?
Hate to single Cafero out on this. I realize he’s not the only ineffective boob in Hartford, but the others don’t seem to be wanting to be Governor.
Can someone tell me how we always manage to elect a Republican Gov in a traditional Democratic state like CT? What do we get? A “queen of England” type. Great title no power. I WANT ANSWERS!
If Larry Cafero runs for govenor- who will the local republicans pick to replacement him in the state house?
McMahon is an absolutely hopeless candidate. Her company actually ran footage of simulated necrophilia on nationwide TV. No, I’m not making this up. I couldn’t have imagined this if I hadn’t seen the YouTube footage myself. The WWE actually did this.
A story was run last week on how WWE pulled simulated rape scenes from their library of “wrestling” footage. I thought that was bad. Didn’t realize that there were even lower depths.
I Want Answers:
The same way Norwalk so frequently elects Republican Mayors. The other party has the numbers to control any election they focus on, but they seldom focus. When the Democrats get together, city wide, agree on a candidate, and then turn out the voters, they elect their choice. Last time that happened, they all supported Obama for president and took time to vote. Most elections, Democrats don’t take time to vote, too busy putting food on the table. Repubs are better organised, better funded, and apparently more easily united.
Old Timer thanks for the insight. Still leads me to believe that the governor’s office stills ends up in a “Queen of England” role. Therein lies the problem, we just don’t have strong leadership any longer. We end up with a bunch pacifists and I want answers.
Wasn’t it Will Rogers who said ” I don’t belong to an organized political party, I’m a Democrat “
Good point Old Timer, and quite apropo to Norwalk’s situation. For the “answer man” I would ask if he considered former Governor Rowland a “queen”. For somebody who wants answers you sure don’t ask a whole lot of questions, uh…Mikey.
