Norwalk: Beware Of The Tomato Bandits

by turfgrrl

August 7th, 2008 · 32 Comments

Who knew the Community Garden at Fodor Farm would be subjected to, gasp, the Tomato Bandit? Apparently Fodor Farm-ers are to be on alert for a white sedan with plate XXX-FOD (they couldn’t get the first numbers of the entire license plate number.)

An alert Fodor Farm-er  saw a man and women (Bonnie and Clyde) picking tomatoes from several plots.

Naturally if you see a white sedan filled with tomatoes with the above license plate letters, in the vincinity of Fodor Farm, feel encouraged to contact the police.

The incident that sparked the call for vigilance occurred on  Monday August 4th between the hours of 12:00PM and 3:30PM.

Yes, please stretch out the already understaffed Police over stolen tomatoes.

  • 2 Anonymous // Aug 7, 2008 at 4:22 pm

Now is the time for street justice set bear traps!

Yes call the police last woman who tried to report something mundane like a stolen bike was told to call back the dept was busy, she did the next day and still waited for a response.Bike has not been recovered.

IMaybe another suggestion is to note any new veggies for sale signs in the area I just hope by releasing this information it doesn’t jeopardize the full scale investigation.

It just goes to show any news of crime no matter how small or big usually hits the public a couple of days late the car will probably be in Texas by now.

If all the crimes were reported like they once were out here it would help the police, who would figure it effected the community gardens? Any victim in Norwalk that can’t get anyone else to listen to their plight already.

those camera’s the police have that never work should be placed out there I’m sure even a box with a mirror glass on a pole looking like security may have prevented this.Reporting it is fine now lets hear some crime fighting suggestions.

You could also take one of the many police cars that are out of service and place one up there, sit a dummy in it or ask Rillings aor Moccia to stand in for a day.

I hope they ketchup to them soon because there is a lot at stake. I know it’s dicey, but they should paste their photos from Hollywood and Vine all the way to Maine. Sorry I am getting so saucy, but I am plum out of puns.

    Attack of the Tomato Killers!

  • 7 Aunt Bertha // Aug 7, 2008 at 6:03 pm

Anon it is ATTACK of The Killer Tomatoes! It was a really campy movie…loved it. I bet Turfgrrl has a copy of it in her dvd collection.

  • 8 Anne Sullivan // Aug 7, 2008 at 6:03 pm

There is NOTHING more frustrating than carefully nurturing plants and then having them disappear right before harvest…..my sympathies to the gardeners! This is why I had a patio garden for many years before I moved to a house with a yard.

  • 9 turfgrrl // Aug 7, 2008 at 6:15 pm

Aunt Bertha: Although a great fan of camp, sadly no attack of the killer tomatoes in my DVD collection.

But that’s what youtube is for:

  • 10 Anonymous // Aug 7, 2008 at 7:23 pm

AB: It was an intentional pun… get it? Tomato Killers?

  • 11 anon // Aug 7, 2008 at 8:04 pm

In the case of a stolen bike, I would think that you could just make that report over the phone. I would hope that the police don’t tie up police officers going to these types of calls when they could take a report over the phone or have the person come down to the police department and report it to someone at the reception desk.

By what has happened this afternoon in Fairfeild it looks like our city takes very little seriously. When it comes to police reports you go to the lobby and make one or have them come to you.Nothing over the phone and no way does the city respond to every call as given its a city not Burger King. Its sad we have such professionals responding to emergencies and have such idiots running the depts makes you wonder if anyone in the city has any idea how their money is spent. We do have an emergency director for the city it will be interesting to see in tommorrows papers what we did to help out other cities that were hard it by storm.

  • 13 anon // Aug 7, 2008 at 8:55 pm

    What happened in Fairfield?

  • 14 Anonymous // Aug 7, 2008 at 9:10 pm

    You have to be kidding?

  • 15 anon // Aug 7, 2008 at 9:16 pm

    Not kidding. What happened?

  • 16 Aunt Bertha // Aug 7, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Sorry #10 I have been accused of being literal to a fault on more than one occasion. I get it now.
    Thanks TG for the memories!

#15 Rt 1 to Milford is one lane,Shelton Fire dept is running calls in Fairfeild and from the amount of help from all parts of Ct coming to this area it shows or warning system in Norwalk is worth crap.We got rain everyone else got what seems like a tornado.I would of thought the warning system was for us people in Norwalk to be alerted to danger.

Maybe if Moccia had his team in place we you would of heard of a possible strike.I’m not an expert but it sounded when it hit coming this way was a strong possibility but warning residents of danger once again would of maybe decreased the property values.

Good Job Dick we once again saw your administration in action. We spent the money on a early warning system so Dick could call at election time and tell us how great he is.

So if anything testing the system today would of been common sense,if we had received a phone call from our emergency call back telling us of the danger and if a tornado had hit the residents would of given him a heroes welcome but now like everything else what kind of damage control are we expecting? The dog ate my emergency itinerary.

Get what you vote for they say.

No tornados touched down in Fairfield County, according to the CT Post. Chicken Little can go back to the hen house now.

  • 20 Lindsay // Aug 8, 2008 at 11:03 am

I dont expect the police to do much about this, but its very upsetting to the gardeners who fuss and toil over their plants only to have the fruits of their labor stolen. Apparently when the bandit was confronted his response was “what are you going to do about it”. What a sh*tty thing to do. I like #5’s idea..haha

  • 21 Anonymous // Aug 8, 2008 at 11:07 am

Do what I do - take out your cell phone and start snapping photos of the license plate and the perpetrators.

  • 22 Anonymous // Aug 8, 2008 at 11:49 am

#19 your right Ct Post didn’t report anything, they were too busy passing papers,Hearst just bought The Post,Advocate,Times ect announced within the last Hour.Too bad for the Hour I’d say.

#18: A friend called me (having a chicken little moment of her own), to alert me of the Tornado Warning for Fairfield County. I turned on the TV and both ch. 8 and ch 61 clearly said the warning was centered on Bridgeport, Stratford, Milford, Shelton, Trumbull…and the radar showed the storm clearly forming to the north of Norwalk and moving south-easterly. No threat for Norwalk. No reason to have the mayor panic (or to throw him under the bus for not going into full scale alert!).

Another friend is in Milford visiting from Illinois. She wasn’t nervous about a tornado what-so-ever. She said she knows what the sky will look like if it’s possible for a tornado to form and the conditions weren’t anywhere close. No green in the sky at all. It was a bad summer thunderstorm that dumped a bunch of rain.
    No biggie.

As for the tomato thiefs, let’s find these rat b*s%ta@ds and string ‘em up by their toes(I will add a just joking disclaimer so no one takes that literally!). But it really is awful that people would do that.

You know the saying, “mean people suck”.

  • 24 Anonymous // Aug 8, 2008 at 12:01 pm

a shame what happened too bad they didn’t run into someone bigger than they were.I do feel for the owners of the lots its not easy growing and when you wait that long it is sad.

#19 Video of the water spout were recorded on a person’s cell phone WTNH also had stories the Post was way to busy cleaning out thier desks.

  • 25 Anonymous // Aug 8, 2008 at 2:36 pm

#23 - you can see video of the tornado that touched down off the beach in Milford, CT on www.milforddailyblog.com if you wish.

As for the “great tomato theft”, since this was a community garden, unless the thieves arrived in an out of state car, I suppose they can be considered to be members of the community……

  • 26 Anonymous // Aug 8, 2008 at 4:26 pm

Tornado? I dunno. Pretty fuzzy. Maybe if the video was clearer…

  • 27 Fodor Farmer // Aug 8, 2008 at 10:02 pm

Earlier this year many residents waited in line at City Hall to buy a vegetable garden plot for Fodor Farm. The purpose of the community garden was to; improve the health of many Norwalkers, and to teach children in particular about healthy living, community cooperation and to give the children a sense of pride. Every week Fodor Farm gardeners weeded grass, watered plants and attended seminars about healthy lifestyles at the farm. Last week a couple decided to teach the kids about life in Norwalk by stealing all of their vegetables that they grew over their summer vacation. That is why the police are monitoring the farm now - so more lives of children are not disapointed.

  • 28 Anonymous // Aug 8, 2008 at 10:12 pm

Hate to suggest that the rest of the city has gone the same way,its a hard lesson for some yet the ones that come from the inner city like the lady that suggested she pay gangs to enter into her apt house at Roodner court this week that was quoted in the paper must understand how some are hurt and disapointed to share that feeling in the city some still will feel it isn’t right even thou they too are victims. Somewhere in all this a message needs to be sent enough is enough.

yes the police are momitoring as if someone was killed but for how long at what expense to others who need the police as well for more serious things than veggies.

In no way am I trying to minimize the crime but just point out Fodor Farm is not alone simply ask around we are all victims of this farm theft lot or not.

I also know the feeling on growing your own I no longer cut the grass in my back yard I farm myself so even for me I am outraged at this.

  • 29 Anonymous // Aug 8, 2008 at 10:45 pm

“That is why the police are monitoring the farm now”

Nothing like closing the barn door after the horse has escaped….

  • 30 anon // Aug 9, 2008 at 12:11 pm

Wait. We are paying police officers to watch vegetables? You’re kidding, right?
