The Movie. At least the trailer. From the director who brought us Wordplay, the smart film about people who live to solve crossword puzzles, we get a big budget feature on economics.

Most of the time we point fingers at the poltical flunkies of all flavors who have spent our way into a $9.5 trillion dollar deficit. But it starts with us. Every time we buy something manufactured in China, or India or where ever, we are in fact contributing to the national deficit. How we got there, and that shopping cart of made elsewhere consumables is just as much a contributing factor is answered in the movie.

It is a challenge to FIND things made in America.

Just go to any of the mass merchandisers (WalMart, Target,) or to Bed & Bath, Linens & Things, Kohls, etc.

Set a timer for five minutes. Look at as many things as you can and where they are made. Count by country.

    USA loses

Manufacturing jobs have been outsourced to other countries via the same thinking that keeps politicians from doing anything about stemming the tide of illegal immigrants.

All you have to do is say, “nobody wants these jobs.” and voila! instant rationale for the status quo. Until that attitude changes, nothing else will.

Instead of whining about competition from other countries where labor is cheaper and/or about immigrants taking the lower paying jobs here, we need to get serious about competing with, and beating these other countries. Anything they can produce inexpensively abroad, using low paid labor, we can produce here using state of the art computer controlled assembly lines.
We lost a large part of the global automobile business because other manufacturers were smarter at predicting market trends and getting models that would sell into dealer showrooms. They also do better marketing. We think of import cars as being more fuel efficient, but my 9 yr old oldsmobile is competitive for highway fuel mileage(30 MPG) with any of them and newer models by GM are even better.
