SoNo Train Station Redesign

Thursday morning, (June 5th) the Connecticut Rail Commuter Council will be on hand from 6 AM to 10 AM to listen to actual commuters about rail service Metro-North and CT DOT as well as Norwalk officials will be on hand. Maybe even some political flunkies, bloggers and media types. That is because also on hand with be the Norwalk Transit District officials (but only till (9 AM) to gather fedback on proposed changes to the SoNo train station. Multi-purpose feedback missions, at the actual point of usage, the right way to go about these things.

Now onto to the redesign. One would hope that by redesign they mean rethinking the purpose of a train station. For some reason, America has lost its way when it comes to train stations. They used to be multi purpose buildings that encouraged the idea that public space could be inviting and commercial even if you didn’t have anywhere to go. And they make great movie sets. But the modern incarnations seemed to become parking lots with rails. They became all about the car, and people and passengers were lost amongst the ramps.

So if they mean redesign,  start with looking at how people, that is pedestrians access the station. Make it a destination for people to hang out and enjoy a café. Dare we say outdoor café? Have room for retail shops, on the scale that works for the newstands, flower shops, giftware, entertainment and other things that make sense for traveling people. Seating is good too. WIFI is really good, but how about some electrical outlets, and yeah you can charge for them, to recharge all those devices we carry? And most importantly, integrate the train station with the rest of SoNo instead of making it look like a fortress. Just a thought.

I completely agree. NYC has always had a demand for mass transit, yet it wasn’t so long ago that Grand Central Terminal was underutilized and avoided. People just didn’t want to be in a grimy and dangerous station - even though there was a demand for the train station. Now Grand Central has loads of retail and restaurants and is a destination in and of itself. I beleive, on a smaller scale, this is the direction Norwalk should head.

These ideas are equally (or more) important when it comes to bus stations.

Maybe they can create a space for the Norwalk Farmers Market to be held year round on Saturday / Sunday’s. Days when people can actually make it over to buy stuff.

The Tranist district is studying a redesign of the station to make it safer and more navigable maybe they heard about the crime at the train station as well.Last week many cars were broken into on the East side where cabs once sat providing some protetcion from the criminals who visit that side.Trusting the report doesn’t suggest Norwalk take back the police station at the train station that cost $300,000 dollars in grants and even more to man it and make things safer that way the city should be all set.

Maybe they can make the station more pedestrian friendly. Coming into Norwalk in the morning you can no longer exit off of the Manhattan-bound platform. Construction has closed the Marshal Street stairway at the end of the ramp. Why could they not build a temporary exit until construction is completed?

An alternate exit is to go through the garage. But that garage stairway is a hanta virus nightmare. Go see for yourself. They need to screen out the pigeons and sandblast the stairwell.

I asked a MetroNorth representative about the platform stairway this morning only to be told it is a DOT problem. Next I was told the garage is a City of Norwalk issue.

With three government entities controlling one facility, is it any wonder we find it the way we do?

Its funny what started out as Moccia’s idea and brainchild and funding turns into a complex nightmare to sort out.Too bad for the mayor looks like the city may have to spend some money of its own like other cities on the line.Figure we make so much from parking seems only right to spend money on security and pigeon removal. But no fear if the cutting ribbon account is running low after some work is done I’m sure the grant writer will find the funds.

Thats a great website lists a meeting at city hall wonder if we will have some political names there?

Its nice to see some sort of demorcracy still exists in Norwalk.

I was there this morning. They were standing in a circle talking to each other and drinking coffee when I caught my 6:44 train. I hope they learned a lot. They were blocking traffic but paying no attention to it in front of the station doors.

What ever happened to the Sono mini master plan?

  • 9 Anonymous // Jun 6, 2008 at 1:08 pm

#7 Sono Rider I found the same situation this morning at 7:30 am. They will probably say they didn’t have any commuter comments, but they didn’t try to talk to anyone commuting at the time I was there. People are busy trying to make their train on time, but will give a comment or suggestion IF asked. The only way I knew they were going to be there was from this blog. So busy looking important.

    To All,
LAZ parking is responsible for the upkeep, maintenance, security (subcontracted) and general day to day operations of the SONO parking garage and well as the other facilities in Norwalk. Thanks to Commandant Knopp & his “Parking Authority” this is what we are left with.

#5 (Crhis) I have been up and down that stairwell and don’t dare touch anything, the amount of “bugs” on all the surfaces there would make anyone squirm. Even the stairway from the main lobby to the platform level stinks, and oh don’t even think of using the handrail Yech!

How about we abolish the PA and hand back control to the city traffic & parking dept? I always thought they did a pretty good job.

One more comment, to spend another dime on another “study” to find out where to let the taxi’s park is a slap in the face to all TAXPAYER’s in Norwalk.

where does the rent go for the old police station at the train station? Is that part of the numbers they use to show LAZ making such ehadway in Norwalk? Thet was a $300,000 dollar station what is the rent for that who gets it or what dept?

Wasn’t there a grant to put the extra 2 stories on the parking garage? I always thought the parking garage was a Spinnaker project. How did it become LAZ?

The train station is all some people see of Norwalk. It would be nice if could be free of litter and very user friendly - signs so people know where to go.
