Let’s see what the Shotspotter is going to cost us;
$200,000 per square mile. We have a $1,000,000 grant from the state, so that means we can do 5 square miles which should be sufficient to cover the most troublesome areas.
BUT, who foots the future bills for upgrades, and maintenance after the warrantee period is over?
Correct, the taxpayer. These things have a way of always exceeding what the state grants. It is impossible to spend only what we have been granted, we must spend more.
We the taxpayers have all gone down the road many times. Politicians cannot survive on staying within their budget it has become a way of life to have over runs. The Boston Big Dig is the perfect example. Remember when listening to politicians pushing their agendas, “believe none of what you hear, and half of what you see.”
The Guardian Angels would cost the city, how much? Peanuts, that’s how much.
If the taxpayer ends up paying ten cents towards this thing it will not be forgotten at election time.
There is no substitute for more boots on the ground. Actually the hardened drug dealers will simply upgrade their guns with silencers.
This system will end up also hearing automobile back fires, and be driven nuts by fire crackers. It will untimely end up being as useful as that Segway 2 wheel wonder that was going to revolutionize police foot patrols. Where is it now?
Will you feel safer if you see a pair of Guardian Angels walking next to you and your wife in the evening, or would you feel safer knowing that the NPD has a system that can tell where the sound of the gunshot that killed you came from?
Think about it.
TILII, Your guide through the political smoke and mirrors.
Do you know what they do in Virginia Beach? They have cops walking the beat with either a priest, minister or Rabbi. I went on vacation there several years ago & thought it was odd to see a minister between two cops, so I asked, and they told me that people actually act better when they see a minister with them. What a novel idea. Now I asked them if it really worked and they said crime went down a lot. Now couldn’t you see that down in South Norwalk, or the beach area (on a Saturday evening in the parking lot), or Rowayton (sure, down their beach area, too! They need help - equal time…..) - everywhere! We have enough ministers in Norwalk. I think it would help. If any political members see this, or members of religious organizations, what are your opinions? They could ride in the cop cars & help out. Anyway, we don’t need guardian angels when we have resident angels to help out on the beat.
stabspotters, asaaultspotter,GPStheifspotters.baroombralwspotters and stolen carspotters are all the problems we face.According to Moccia the city doesn’t have a out of control problem with guns.Last gunshot victim Norwalk police responded to were there within a minute so lets pair that down to 20 seconds with a spotter and maybe they will catch the sonofabitch with a gun? enough already!
What wasn’t said ? Is Rillings using Oakland Cal as an example they have had 148 deaths last year what the hell is Rillings expecting from Norwalk?
Put the system in and we will be down to 100 cops.Just recently it was said by a few police officers time waiting for a cop is now an hour in most cases when they get busy does this system come with officers as well?
Just another friggin lame brain not thinking idea that will enhace the ability of the regular crimminal with a knife.
Is this something that Rillings men have learned from class brought it back and threw it out as great idea knowing hiring more men is not what the mayor and chief wants?
Hey East Norwalk safety meeting members remember how Oakland cal was brought up in your meeting?
Connect the dots you will find the referance was planted there.
Its funny how when ideas are launched to make this city safer the brain dead pool has to comeup with one making us think their years of service is showing us some sort of original ideas. The best part of this the companies come in to sell this item now will make Norwalk the crime capital of the world to send fear into the residents this is what they need. Most were worried about the posters here just wait and see how aggessive these two companies can be.One already said Norwalk residents are not reporting all the gunshots they hear any more how lovely on cable was that?
So if one is worried about Norwalks image last week wait till the sales agents get a start on Norwalks new image needing the system.
One suggestion we keep hearing is why not community police , police beats in the troube area’s as in bike patrols?
We heard the police union was to blame how lame was that? No one in that East Norwalk meeting bought it right?
Again with police stats from Nicks playbook about crime going down.I think at this point so much doubt has been cast on the police dept telling us the truth its doing no good to throw out numbers any more most of us simply don’t believe the numbers anymore.
Segway looked good in the parade on Monday…
Love this song! Thanks for posting it.
POST 4
“Segway looked good in the parade on Monday…”
A dozen Guardian Angels would have looked better.
A junkie who would not hesitate to shoot his grandmother or a cop, would not give a damn if a minister was shot. In fact the minister just makes the target bigger for collateral damage.
Why take an innocent bystander and make a target of them.
The PD that uses ministers most likely turned down the Guardian Angels and are not intimidated by the ministers, so they praise the system.
It sounds like some didn’t understand,no one can stop the Angels from coming to the city if enough want them. There isn’t any laws preventing them from organizing and setting up shop if its the will of the people. The city hosted the Angels to speak but they don’t have to support them. They can’t be thrown out or denied access to the city and that is what probably bothers Moccia so much people he can’t push around and dictate to.It was explained having the support and a repore with the police is ideal.Having someone on the street to see how long a response is and how the police control a crowd is something Rillings doesn’t want.Eyes and ears on the street is what we are asking for so if it isn’t a cop we will find someone else Their way or our way residents might feel safer.I thought that was the goal.
Play your cards right Dick and we will let you cut the ribbon.
#2, your post starts off like a joke (a priest, a minister & a rabbi walk into Sono…along with a cop…).I agree with #1; the Angels would be cheaper and do a better job.
So let me get this straight. Rilling & Moccia are looking into the possibility of spending a hunk of taxpayer money on a system designed to detect a problem they say doesn’t exist. Brilliant!
I don’t know what kind of microphone/pickup the system uses to detect gunfire, but you can bet it would be the first component shot up/stolen/ or disabled.
why not #9 Moccia and Hal do it all the time, they even spend money on problems and never fix them.
BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO - Best comments in a long time: clever, pithy, and all right on target.
Some of you guys are brilliant.
Maybe they could install the pickup mikes inside the handgun dropoff boxes that they made so much fuss over. Has anyone ever actually seen one of those boxes?
No #12 the gangs sold them lajoies for scrap.I trust we will never hear what else the money could of gone for.How is it we had it laying around and now we are talking about spending it.Its not election time, its not yet the end of the fiscal year or is it we need to make a purchase and hide some of it within the damage control dept when the fiscal year ends.It sucks when you simply don’t trust the people in charge with our money any more.Last interview on channel 12 it looked like Harry was trying to convince himself of the idea instead of us of the shotspotter.I wonder if they are going to give the kids some free time with their weapons to test out the system.I’m surprised to hear from the EMT’s the last dozen or so assaults that ended up transporting to the hospital were stabbings. This was only a two week span where over a dozen were stabbed according to the Hour one of the last one was a walk in to the police station lobby talk about conveniant. Now if we can only arm the victims with guns all they need to do is shoot into the air with this new system to call police when stabbed maybe we are missing the point here.
I’m a retired English professor, so maybe that’s why all the grammatical errors and rambling non-sentences here annoy me. I can’t take any of you seriously if you can’t phrase a proper sentence.
Re Anon4
Obviously you did not do a very good job on us.
We need an idioticincompententelectedofficial spotter. Are grants available for those?

thats ok #14 I still write my English professor and her husband he was was also one of my mentors at MIT. She still sends back my emails corrected. We were told we would be corrected the rest of our lives becuase of poor gramma and poor penmanship ect.I guess if we play it as safe like the mayor and police chief and put nothing in writing and nod all the time we might be able to fool most of the people of Norwalk but be just as ineffective.I’m truly sorry i can’t get my point accross any other way but it would be nice if someone who thinks the same way as yourself simply do something positive to help this city and send the posts back corrected.I know I wouldn’t mind it and then know some of the taxpayers get the point but in a corrected way of course.Might just send the right messsage and bring some change to this city it is all about making it safe isn’t it?I know I could use the help I’ll be the first to admit your right.
#16 - NICE one!!!
jumbled thoughts, fractured phrases
of Dick and Harry, Donner and Blitzen
unclear, tepid, awkward, and strained
bump into dead ends,
somewhere in between
the fool’s gold mouthpiece
and your name
At last someone who makes sense Run for mayor.
#15 - I did a great job, you obviously were never one of my students.
#19 - I didn’t mean to imply that I don’t have a life just because I’m retired. Making these postings grammatically acceptable would be a full time job. Some of them are so God-awful you can’t even figure out what they’re TRYING to say!
Anon 4 - Ouch! I am compelled to comment on your above statement, which reads:
“I’m a retired English professor, so maybe that’s why all the grammatical errors and rambling non-sentences here annoy me. I can’t take any of you seriously if you can’t phrase a proper sentence.”
With such a narrowed perspective, you run the risk of operating in a vacuum with no regard for others’ cultures, beliefs, and opinions. It’s a curious thing that someone of your academic standing cannot “read between the lines” for the gist of a message. Certainly you are aware that some learning disabilities carry over as poor writing skills here online. Not everyone has strengths in the verbal department, and thank GOD for that! Those of us who write well can’t necessarily read maps or weigh algebraic equations.
Hmm… was this post written well enough to validate my opinion?
Awesome #24 your post validates.
OK, I know this will go over like a lead balloon.
Privatize the school system.
… and why is the government delivering my mail?
Fed Ex, UPS and DHL may be able to do it cheaper and more efficiently.
Thank you #24
And another thing, Anon4: often the most dynamic, charismatic human beings do not express themselves as well in writing as they do in person. The quiet, unassuming types tend to speak the loudest on paper.
BFG135: Be careful with your statements of privatizing the public schools. You went to public school & it did you well, didn’t it?
