Hot off the presses, er, the press release pixels, news of the official findings of the Office of the Chief State’s Medical Examiner, who is certifying that Officer Morelli’s death was a suicide. The presser:

On May 27th, Norwalk Police Chief Harry W. Rilling received notification from the Office of the Chief State’s Medical Examiner certifying the death of Norwalk Police Officer Matthew Morelli on March 21st, 2008 as a suicide. This conclusion was based on autopsy results as well as information from the extensive investigative efforts into Officer Morelli’s death.

The agencies involved in the investigation included the Connecticut State Police Major Crime Squad, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Office of the Chief State’s Medical Examiner, as well as the Norwalk Police Department’s Detective Bureau and Special Services Division.

The Morelli family has been personally notified of the findings by Chief Rilling.

This is an extremely sad and difficult time for Officer Morelli’s family and friends, for our department and the communities of Norwalk and Weston. We ask that all due respect and privacy be given to the Morelli family so that they can continue with the healing process during this most difficult time.

At this time our, focus should be on the good work done by Matthew Morelli as a son, brother, father and friend. We should never forget the service he gave to his community and his country as a volunteer firefighter, EMT, police officer and a combat veteran in the United States Marine Corps.

he should be remembered and honored for his service to his country and our city and our hearts and prayers should go to supporting his daughter. Whatever private pain he carried should remain private.

Very well put #1. We can all speculate on the circumstances that led to his sad choice to end his life. We can never know what internal agonies haunted him and we don’t need to know. What we need to do now is respect his memory and remember Matt for all he did for his town, our town and our country. His service shows that he put others first and this is what people should think about when they choose to make comment. His daughter will never know her father and his parents will only have memories. Try to be kind in your words so as not to add to their pain.

May he rest in a peace he could not find here, for whatever reason. There but for the grace of God go us all. Let’s not judge, for no one knows the mind and heart of another.
My condolences to his families: the one he was born into and the ones he served with.

Very well put. Suicide is so hard for everyone involved, but the survivors have it the toughest because of the unanswered questions left behind. My prayers are with his family as well as with Officer Morelli. The healing process takes longer with this type of death, but there are places to go to help with the grief process. No one should grieve alone. May God be with all of those who grieve at this time. God Bless.

Very true, Anon#6. Too bad all the other sites in the yourct.com couldn’t be the same way. Maybe in Morelli’s honor, they could be.
