The Peoples Republic of Rowayton is located in beautiful South Norwalk. Shouldn’t all of Norwalk have a municipal pool? See NYC as a leading example.

The downfall of Norwalk ended when you stopped having children going to school in their home communities.

  • 3 anonymous // Apr 24, 2008 at 2:35 pm

I think we should revisit the concept of neighborhood schools.

  • 4 Anonymous // Apr 24, 2008 at 2:45 pm

Sounds like segregation to me. Are the previous two posters Wonder Bread Rowaytonites?

    Doesn’t #2 read:

Norwalk’s downfall stopped when busing began.

Ergo, busing was good for Norwalk?

If you ever get your pool may a convoy of trucks stop and the drivers get out and p@ss in your pool.

You had more of a turnout than during the last election you all should be ashamed of yourselves.

Didn’t Dick come support the pool? one more ribbon cutting event with pictures he will miss.

    • Has anyone been following the “POOL” saga in Rowayton? This had a lot of things in common with what was being tried in one of our parks here in our part of Norwalk. A small group wanted to build a “Pay Pool” on public land at Bailey Beach. They used the same old worn out BS that was used here. It would not cost the taxpayer “A DIME.” The projected cost of this pool was to be $1,500,000 and guess what the group pushing for this had already had pledges of $19,000, and expected the balance to come from a fund raising efforts. Now lets look closely at this figure, we all know that if it was to cost a million five, that when it was ready to proceed it would come in at around 2.2 million in increased price costs. Then there is the economy which is going into the tank and most likely will be there for at least another 18 months. The biggest joke of all was the price to join this pool club on a public beach was estimated to be between $ 800-12, 00 per season. Now we all know that once a price was set, that there was only one way it could go, and that is up. In a year or two it would be $1200-1800 the $1500 to $2000 and soon it would be a Simi private country club amenity with only a few Rowayton residents willing to be extorted. Then when it was found that it could not be made profitable with only Rowayton residents, the next trick would be to open it to out of Towner etc. When that failed the cry from the gang who thought up this brain storm would start to cry “Help do you want the pool to close and become an eyesore?” “We need help from the taxpayer to keep it open. Well, I guess the residents of Rowayton must have seen through the smoke and mirrors, and figured that this was a plain and simple land grab. I hope that a few politicians in this city get the point, “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and you can fool all of the people some of the time, BUT YOU CAN’T FOOL ALL OF THE PEOPLE ALL OF THE TIME, and it is getting tougher every day. Congratulations Rowaytonites but keep your guard up, because you know what they say about “Bad Pennies.”

#2: The White students do go to school in their own neighborhoods. It’s the minority students who are bussed all over.

  • 9 Anonymous // Apr 24, 2008 at 6:26 pm

well this thread should help move real estate in Rowyaton. Its sad but can’t say it hasn’t been coming.

Old Timer your right few politicians in this city get the point.

  • 10 old timer // Apr 24, 2008 at 7:57 pm

WHY IS IT SO MANY SCAMS START WITH THE SAME FAMILIAR “THIS ISN’T GOING TO COST A CENT” THEN, IN THE FINE PRINT, IT LISTS WHAT THE COST(S) WILL BE. ANYTIME ANYBODY OFFERS TO BUILD SOMETHING ON PUBLIC PROPERTY THAT WILL NOT BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, WE HAVE TO REALISE THEY ARE TRYING TO AVOID BUYING LAND. THERE IS ALREADY A VERY NICE PRIVATE POOL IN THE AREA FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO PAY THE MEMBERSHIP FEE AT WEEBURN. WHO WAS GOING TO PROFIT, IF THIS WAS ALLOWED ?

Having grown up in Rowayton and having watched all of the changes there (good and bad) throughout the years I feel the need to comment on Jakki’s “People’s Republic of Rowayton” tag…tsk tsk TurfGirl for propagating the misconception that all people in Rowayton feel they are separate and above every other resident of Norwalk. The pool initiative has been brought forward by a very small group of residents most of whom have lived in Rowayton for less than 10 years. The proposition is ridiculous any way that you look at it and as attested to by the resounding “No” vote last night, NOT supported by the majority of the residents in town. Believe it or not there are residents of the Rowayton section of Norwalk who continue to struggle to financially to pay mortgages, property taxes, gas and rent…not all of the residents of Rowayton are Fortune 500 tycoons or hedge fund managers.

Re post 11, We all agree with you. I think that some were being facetious in a way. There is an old rule, “YOU NEVER GET SOMETHING FOR NOTHING, YOU MIGHT GET NOTHING FOR SOMETHING, BUT YOU WILL NEVER GET SOMETHING FOR NOTHING.”

I think that somewhere out there they have a collage that specializes in courses on “PULLING THE FAST ONE”, evidently politicians are not it’s only graduates.

How about Ruh-Ro? Throw some Scooby factor in while you’re at it.

  • 16 Anonymous // Apr 25, 2008 at 8:48 am

Not much different from proposals to build private entertainment/food facilities at Vet’s Park to be run as private for-profit businesses. It is much easier to succeed in business when the location is paid for by taxpayers.
Norwalk seems to be moving in the direction of city services supported by user fees rather than taxes. The sewer plant & parking, for example. Shouldn’t our tax rate have gone down when those services went strictly fee-based ? How long before user fees for schools, public works, police and fire ?

  • 17 Anonymous // Apr 25, 2008 at 9:02 am

Good point. Look at the Parking Authority, now in the black. How has that affected our taxes? Not a bit.

  • 18 Anonymous // Apr 25, 2008 at 9:04 am

I like OHNO! as a moniker for Rowayton.

  • 19 So broke I can't change my mind // Apr 25, 2008 at 9:18 am

    Hey! # 16 & 17,,,

If tomorrow the city was 200 million in the black, and home prices dropped another 25%, and the recession went into a borderline depression, the politicians would still find a way to INCREASE OUR TAXES. Once a tax of any kind is put in place it is like a cancer, it just keeps growing and growing until it consumes its host.

Look at the wonders that the CASINOS were going to do for Connecticut residents no to mention the LOTTERY which is now sucking money out of those who can least afford it. Did you feel the tax burden being lifted? I think not. Why you ask? Because the politicians found NEW CREATIVE WAYS to spend the money funding stuff that they wanted but did not need. They have designed budgets around PROJECTED CASINO INCOME. Now that casino income is falling are they going to trim the fat? Maybe they will but it will be the fat from our pocketbooks. It will always be that way until the taxpayer revolts and sends a message to the legislators “NO MAS.”

  • 20 06853 // Apr 25, 2008 at 11:36 am

Turfgrrl: I fail to find them amusing…

  • 21 Anonymous // Apr 25, 2008 at 11:48 am

#16 we need new development so we can give the developers a break and not pay taxes the first couple of years while we pay for more police fire and DPW equipment and employees and make what we have now worse for the residents who built this city.

06853 i don’t find it amusing as well, so stand in line our problems came before yours!

  • 22 Pissed Off Big time // Apr 25, 2008 at 7:16 pm

Kind of funny but in this town there are politicians who think the Sun rises and sets in a Developers Butthole. They believe that bigger is always better. It is developers who are partially responsible for the housing mess we are in now. Drive down to Daytona or Miami to name just 2 cities, and you will see hundreds of 20 story condos, some not finished, other with only 2-3 residents. They built the buildings and now the city is stuck with trying to give them fire and police coverage even though they are vacant.

  • 23 Anonymous // Apr 25, 2008 at 7:37 pm

yuor right #22 add having family members that are real estate agents renting those condo’s and new space in building and they lose sight we have any real problems to face in the future.

Then they come on the blog and use outdated incentives to why we need the billion dollar buildings.

We were told we need these building to offset taxes yet once built drawing city services they don’t pay right away so they can pay for building on haz mat sites. Its a great deal for them sucks for us.

  • 24 anonymous // Apr 25, 2008 at 9:48 pm

What we need to do is tear down the public housing complexes and reduce low income housing. You think condos are the drain on police, fire, dpw, and other public services??? See the proportion for police, fire, and ambulance calls and the corresponding taxes paid by the people using these services in the housing complexes. I’d rather have the condos.

  • 25 Anonymous // Apr 25, 2008 at 9:55 pm

just combine a pool and a election of mayor vote together and then maybe we will get a big turnout.

Police inadvertently became part of a welcoming party for a baby born to a South Norwalk couple Tuesday morning. Their gifts? Fifty-nine thousand dollars worth of stolen goods collected when officers caught three men allegedly burglarizing the couple’s residence at 96 Truman St. Wednesday after 8 a.m.

This was a condo also I’m sure the crimminals of Norwalk prefer condo’s also

  • 26 anonymous // Apr 26, 2008 at 9:20 am

Leave Rowayton alone. They probably pay more taxes per capita than any other section of the City and are probably less of a demand for public services too.

  • 27 old timer // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:33 am

The rant against public housing is not all wrong. Experience has shown, in Cities all over the country, that public money is better spent as seed money in projects that develop ownership rather than just subsidized rents. Projects are being torn down and replaced with ownership developments where working poor can build equity and neighborhood pride keeps the criminal element away. Town house gardens was built as an ownership project and has no problems like subsidized rent projects. Public housing projects should be sold off as condo units and get the city out of the slumlord business. Working poor owners build much better communities than non-working poor renters.

  • 28 dawn // Apr 26, 2008 at 3:53 pm

If you drive down south main street (of course with your windows rolled up and doors locked)you will see the problem in Norwalk. There is a homeless shelter right next to a school, the police station. Drugs and alcohol being openly consumed right there oput in the open. You would think we were in the the inner city. This is not why I moved to Connecticut. The police who i believe are good people and hard working need to be given fore freedom to arrest people for committing quality of life crimes. Every time a person violates these petty crimes they need to be arrested. EVERY TIME. Send a message. These things will not be tolerated in this community. If this is not done the message sent is keep doing it and we will accept it. And we’ll also give you a program to help you not do it again. WRONG MESSAGE!!!!!

  • 29 Anonymous // Apr 26, 2008 at 5:40 pm

Your posting is welcomed Dawn,I’m afraid what your suggesting will take more money and manpower. The city right now is having problems keeping officers in working cruisers to protect even Rowyaton. While we are on the subject of Rowyaton why has Norwalk fire spent two days fighting a fire in Rowyaton have they even been told there is a fire?

  • 30 ex-cop // Apr 27, 2008 at 11:35 am

Dawn, You are suggesting the Bill Bratton theory of law enforcement. Keep after the quality of life crimes, broken windows, etc. and the rest takes care of itself. It worked for him in New York. The cops in Norwalk don’t have time to be proactive. They are too busy reacting to calls. Bpt had State Police help in dealing with the same problem. More recently, Hartford did, too. Anybody know how that worked out ? I suspect it helped, but not all that much. We need more local cops on the street and it will cost money.
