Rising seas, Georgia heat and dead lobsters. That would normally call for a B-52’s themed youtube clip, but it’s NCAA tourney time, so my head is way back in the 80’s and for all the Cinderellas out there:

With the talk always just about Corda, I am wondering if people are happy with the principals of the schools. I am very unhappy with the one at Marvin. Am I alone out there?

I’m a mother with a child going into Kindergarten next Fall. I am seeking information on Norwalk schools. My initial due diligence isn’t painting a pretty picture. Our neighborhood school is Kendall. How do I get more information? If you had to rank Norwalk elementary schools which one would come out on top? Do I have an option of sending my child to a different school within the district? How do I find out if my school is up to par? Any information would greatly be appreciated.

I would rely on opinions from an assortment of parents in the neighborhood regarding how their kids are faring, particularly with kindergarten and primary teachers. You can also attend Kendall school meetings and make an appointment with the principal for an interview. Ask about test scores, programs and services available for your child.
You call also apply to Columbus Magnet School’s lottery and also the Charter School, Side by Side. Both of these are located in South Norwalk and many parents are pleased with the alternative to the neighborhood school.

I agree with former PTA prez’s advice. My daughter attended Kendall until she got into Columbus Magnet. Kendall was OK, but I appreciated that all the teachers at Columbus bought into the same overriding educational philosophies - it provided consistency from year to year. Consistency was lost in middle school and rediscovered at BMHS Center for Global Studies.

Such a loss that Norwalk still doesn’t have a middle magnet school yet! There was a strong movement to start one after Columbus MAgnet school opened in 1981 but the teachers and administrators killed it. Many disappointed parents, myself included, withdrew their children from Norwalk Schools.
The Global Studies program sounds fantastic, what a bonus for Brien McMAhon, which used to be the poor overlooked high school years ago. Dr. Bill Jassey, the founder, was such a creative guy. He made many enemies, creativity being not much admired in Norwalk when I was involved years ago.

Question for former PTA prez, if you don’t mind me asking, where did you children go instead of the Norwalk schools?

  • 7 Anonymous // Mar 19, 2008 at 3:33 pm

There are plenty of GREAT teachers in Norwalk. There are even a good number of EXCEPTIONAL ones. Depending on your child, the teachers he/she gets, the school, the kids in the classes, the building principal, and more - your child will excel or not. Stay in touch. Stay involved. Ask questions.

If we are lucky, the BOE will start taking the challenge and will straighten things out at city hall. We finally have figured out that Corda works for the BOE and not the other way around.

It isn’t all bad - ask someone at the high schools to give you a list of the colleges the students have been accepted to. I guarantee you will be impressed. Somehow, despite the way things are run in Norwalk, some of the kids do very well.

I think there is a great Kindergarten teacher at Columbus…Ms. Sue. What an awesome teacher! At Kendall there are also excellent kindergarten teachers and not everyone likes Columbus, your child should be willing to learn and you should be ready to talk to whoever his/her teacher is where ever you send him/her. Parents are the only people who will be speaking up for their children. It is a great thing you are getting involved in the process before your child walks into kindergarten. With a parent who cares as you do your child is already ahead of the curve! good luck to you.

#5: You’re right about Brien McMahon. It has greatly improved over the past several years, and much of the McMahon community seems very proud of their school. Yes, the building is beautiful, but they are proud of what the teachers, coaches and others do for the students.

LT. JOHN FORLIVIO, the Stamford Police Department’s designated U-visa certification officer, has signed off on one U-visa application and dismissed two others for not meeting the criteria. The federal U-visa is offered to illegal immigrants who have become victims of certain crimes. The application requires a law enforcement agent to certify that the applicant was a crime victim.

Who is the Norwalks U-visa certification officer?

The Board of Police Commissioners and Traffic Authority on Wednesday unanimously approved changing the location where taxis at the South Norwalk train station may wait for fares.
Taxis currently wait in the large surface parking lot on the eastbound side of the station.

Under the new policy, they will wait in the driveway outside the westbound side of the station, which is the side where the main station building and parking structure stand off of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Tell me am I wrong in thinking the new spot for cars to park and wait will be where the handicapped and elderly and low income residents go and pay their electric bills?

The cabs as it was ran over three people within the last year, had numerous fist fights among themselves and now they are to go and mingle with the customers of the SNEWORKS where if yuor bill is paid early you get a discount?

I must be wrong in assuming all this no one could be so insensitive to allow cabs to park there because the study they did showed this would be safe for our elderly and handicapped residents.

  • 12 Anonymous // Mar 20, 2008 at 8:30 am

yep that means screw the elderly and hadicapped from paying their electic bill at SNEWORKS make them walk they need the exercise

The new plan means five parking spaces in front of the main station building currently available for the public to pick up or drop off passengers will be reassigned to waiting taxis.

  • 13 Anonymous // Mar 20, 2008 at 11:58 am

There should be a couple of taxi spaces, at most, at the RR station. the other taxis that are just waiting around for a radio-dispatched call should have their own parking lot, provided by the Taxi companies, or they should cruise. The City has no more obligation to provide free parking for them than it has for any other private service company. Letting a lot of taxis hang around at the RR station and socialise when business is slow has been a mistake.

  • 14 Anonymous // Mar 20, 2008 at 12:36 pm

what about the people who simply run in pay the electric or water bill and run out. For a young person its easy but for our older or handicapped person isn’t the city obligated to have spaces for them at the front door, yes its a train station but its SNEW offices too . Screw the cabbies most of them fight among themselves anyways just ask an officer.

  • 15 Anonymous // Mar 20, 2008 at 1:18 pm

This city has serious problems, Police out of control,Taxes out of control,Roads out of control,Tax breaks for big companys,Kids out of control.leave the cabbies alone, people request cabs at the train.
In any city in the U.S.you need cabs at the RR or Airport.
Next major snow storm lets see who you call to transport you or your children home or work

Board of Police Commissioners and Traffic Authority have bigger problems to deal with.

where is Mayor Espo when you need him

  • 16 Anonymous // Mar 20, 2008 at 1:25 pm

No there are no problems MR Greenpeace has made this all up and we all are starting to believe him he has ruined our city.

  • 17 Anonymous // Mar 20, 2008 at 3:26 pm

Why are you blaming Greenpeace? Do you think he’s the only one that has concerns on this blog? Think again! There are many on here that won’t use their names because they are afraid of repercussions and backlash. I’m willing to bet many on this blog are closer to what is really happening than we know. Do you really think they want anyone to know they are complaining or giving out information that others don’t want us to know? Greenpeace hasn’t ruined the city, he’s just trying to get some points across so we ask questions.

  • 18 Anonymous // Mar 20, 2008 at 8:09 pm

Mr Greenpeace is a pawn..Hes not smart enough to know whats going on.
Do you honestly think he would be a MAYOR in another respectable town.
    NORWALK is a Hole.
    Fairfield county is a joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we deserve what we get,we’re just as stupid as they are,but they receive a pension.(for life)

    taxi drivers must unite!!!!!!!!!!

    norwalk residents must unite!!!!!!!

  • 19 Anonymous // Mar 20, 2008 at 8:31 pm

#18-I think you have an axe to grind with Mr. Greenpeace. Could it be because much of what he says can be found without too much effort but nobody wants to hear it? If you don’t think he’s smart why not google some of what he says and you may be quite surprised at just how smart and informed he is. But then that would take effort on your part and that might be to strenuous. and as someone said above, there are many more on this blog that contribute to alot of things that we are now seeing in the papers so I guess they can’t be wrong on everything.

Another entry into the “What Were They Thinking?” drawer. ASSIGNED PARKING SPACES FOR TAXIS’ on State Street???? Half of those taxis could’nt even pass an inspection at the DMV and most of the drivers drive like they are in a foriegn country. I’d bet there would be at LEAST 3 fatalities within a week. There are hundreds of vehicles using the 8-10 spaces directly in front of the entrance to the West bound side of the RR station AND the SNEW offices. People use these spaces for anywhere between 3 and 15 minutes on the average. Riders on Metro North are being dropped off here by the dozens each morning & being picked up in the evening. SNEW customers who wish to take advantage of a 10% discount on their electric bill and pay in person use these spaces. To now take those spaces & restrict there use to taxis only reeks of a pay off or another yet to be discovered scandal for the City Of Norwalk. Next thing you know we’ll hear about city hall employees looking into personal records & information on cops and fireman……..perhaps an identity theft or two………….

  • 21 Anonymous // Mar 20, 2008 at 11:26 pm

This decision the mayor and his stooges have made without any concern for the average person is simply disgusting. Grandma is not going to like parking in the garage to pay an electric bill. What ever happened to what the public wants trust the mayor is done this last move on the parking was clearly done with a no insight. Not once during the press release did we hear about the crime and homeless problem in and around the station like it doesn’t exist.

Thats right anything that happens on a fri and sat night doesn’t actually count anymore the city takes weekends off.

Odds walking out of the station to downown Sono late night without incident has to come with a 20% chance of being robbed assaulted or beat for your ipod.If the walk to washington st doesn’t do it the walk back probably will. The lobby of the police station fills up on the weekends for police reports at least some mayor had insight where to put Fort Apache.

You would think the study someone is paying for on the train station would be done before this move was done, what happens if the study says change it back? Sounds like some more money foolishly spent before perks are put on hold.
