The Friends of Cranbury Park and Parks and Rec are hooking up to offer outdoor themed instructional classes at Cranbury Park.

The nonprofit Friends of Cranbury Park and the Recreation and Parks Department will offer classes that include dog obedience, Frisbee, yoga, tai chi, watercolor and photography.

“We know there’s a lot of use of the park, between Frisbee golfers, dog walkers and weddings,” Recreation and Parks Director Michael Mocciae said. “We wanted to expand our programming.”

Organizers are seeking residents with talents such as floral design or orienteering to teach.

Classes will be offered through Recreation and Parks for a fee; instructors will be paid.

Adult and continuing education classes are offered at other city facilities, but the park setting offers something special, said Nancy Shulins, co-president of Friends of Cranbury Park

Something wonderfully inspiring is taking place at Ponus Ridge M.S.

Why can’t we include performing arts in the curriculum at all schools?

    What about production?

Why can’t we get N.H.S. and McMahon on the air?

Why can’t we find inspiration from within?

What are the barriers that need to be conquered,

    to inspire mind and spirit?

why can’t we bus the children who can’t use Ryan and Flax hill park to Cranberry park?

I’m sure we can come up with funds for our kids in South Norwalk our taxes help pay for Cranberry park correct?

Give the children in Norwalk a chance to enjoy grass without needles? A park without gangs maybe thats something that needs to be addressed.

sounds like a great idea what about it Nancy Micheal anyone?

How about drive-in summer movies! Cranbury Park hosted a Halloween movie special featuring the birds and the nightmare before Christmas this past year which was a brilliant evening activity.

I say Cranbury park becomes all the rage with a drive-in summer movie program. Every Friday or Saturday night a double feature.

Friends of Cranbury park? Yeah right, more like friends of the mayor or some other person who has never spent time there. Now the non-profit group is giving jobs to their friends on rent-free property.
Gallagher must be rolling over in his grave!
#2 These Friends like Nancy are white privileged nazis that have no concern for the south-end of our town. I think they are from Wilton.

  • 5 Anonymous // Feb 20, 2008 at 12:58 pm

I am always amused when some people are always telling others what to do with their money, time, and property. If you are worried about the south end, maybe you should start a friends of flax hill park.

Friends of Cranbury Park has done so many wonderful things with the park that anyone who bad mouths them is just plain crazy They are not friends of the Mayor and they must go under the guidlines of the Parks and Rec. They have cleaned up the park like never bfore, they have planted so many beautiful flowers and they have been instrumental in putting in the new entance way, as well as holding different activities that are family friendly. Believe me, Friends of Cranbury started way before Dick Moccia knew anything about it. It started as an idea and with the help of some key people who were willing to advise on ways to get it started it blossomed into what it is today. A very beneficial organization that does not cow tow to any one faction of Norwalk but make improvements that affect all citizens who choose to use Cranbury Park. Perhaps those who live in the vicinity of Flax Hill could contact Nancy and others to find out how they got started. You can’t sit in front of a computer and complain. Things don’t get done overnight and it takes many people willing to work for the good in order to have an organization like Friends of Cranbury.

You can’t even get into Flax Hill park anymore after the last reported shooting during the day.I don’t live in the south end but live near the park.

The bathroom that is usually locked, obvious eye-sore; cost taxpayers over 1mil. How much did we pay for the new entrance way? Another poorly engineered design. Its on a sharp curve with little to no visablity.
    Lets get it right!
How many meager complaints have been addressed by norwalk police due to the Friends not getting along with other park dwellers? Ask them!
Lonely rich alcoholic housewives with nothing better to do with their time then tell other people what to do. Not my friends!

  • 9 anonymous // Feb 20, 2008 at 1:48 pm

It is so much more productive to rant about Flax Hill Park on the blog than to start an organization that actually does things such as the “Friends of Cranbury Park”. People do listen here!

  • 10 Anonymous // Feb 20, 2008 at 2:04 pm

I think Frinds have done a great job you can have something nice in Norwalk and we as a family contribute time when we can on projects. Its truly a nice area for our kids and ourselves.

I’m also for the flak jackets for Flax Hill Fathers Foundation we do have the best of both worlds here in the city.

  • 11 Anonymous // Feb 20, 2008 at 2:33 pm

Maybe someone here should start a real clean up crew for the Flax Hill Park. The jokes are kind of funny but it sounds like its time to stop laughing and clean it up. Saturday mornings sound good?

  • 12 Anonymous // Feb 20, 2008 at 2:53 pm

not a bad idea have the rec open the gate so we can get in organize some goals see what we are faced with I imagine the glass and debris is overwhelming by now no one has been in it except for a few hearty souls on the weekend and the police until recent had no key. I like the idea something positive in between what actually exists there at the park.

  • 13 Anonymous // Feb 20, 2008 at 2:58 pm

Does anyone want to venture into Flax Hill Park this weekend? Maybe we can roll up our sleeves and get started. Any takers?

  • 14 Anonymous // Feb 20, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Ok, so how does Saturday at 9 sound?

    RSVP, please: flaxhill@gmail.com

  • 15 Anonymous // Feb 20, 2008 at 3:33 pm

    9AM of course.

  • 16 Anonymous // Feb 20, 2008 at 4:01 pm

not trying to be difficult any chance of sunday with sun and no snow showers?

  • 17 Joanne // Feb 20, 2008 at 4:18 pm

I have sent a message to those who attended the NNHT meeting if there is any availability to help out with the cleanup. I will forward any responces I get to the above e-mail address.

  • 18 Anonymous // Feb 20, 2008 at 4:33 pm

You are not being difficult at all. Sunday would be fine too. We should gather a list of people that would like to help clean up flax hill and see what works best for the majority along with the weather. Thanks for letting me know about the snow. :-)

  • 19 Joanne // Feb 20, 2008 at 5:08 pm

Snow will probably prevent a cleanup this weekend, I suggest next weekend Sat/Sun would be best.

  • 20 Anonymous // Feb 21, 2008 at 7:44 am

Maybe Parks and Rec can get a few people out there to clean up the condoms, bullets and other things that we don’t want kids to pick up. If Parks and Rec is reading this, do you think this can happen by next weekend? Since its going to snow this weekend that gives you some extra time to get over there and try to get some of this crap out out of there so we can get that place up and working as a real park where kids can go to without worry of contamination.

  • 21 Anonymous // Feb 21, 2008 at 9:24 am

tell parks and rec its deco street art they will have it on Ebay by the end of the day

  • 22 anonymous // Feb 21, 2008 at 9:31 am

#20 - Why don’t you give the parks and rec director a call and ask him to help with the clean-up? He has always been helpful every time I’ve asked him for assistance (and no, I’m not a city employee or politician - just a tax-paying citizen). Call Mike Mocciae at 854-7725.

  • 23 Anonymous // Feb 21, 2008 at 10:47 am

if the police dept couldn’t get a key to open the gates what makes anyone think they will help out?

I would suggest because of overtime leave a truck there to fill if trash is an issue have them come pick it up when they close and lock the gate their isn’t enough parking in the driveway on regular days when others are trying to use a locked park on Flax Hill. Its locked because? I thought a busy park will cut down on crime?

can’t have it both ways can you?

be nice to see some city cooperation this time they all read the blog some have posted out here so communication through the blog should be easy if not send him the link I’m sure their computers get this site.

  • 24 Joanne/NNHT // Feb 21, 2008 at 11:05 am

Ok, I made the necessary phone calls. We now have bags, litter pickers and gloves available to us for next weekend March 1st/2nd to do the cleanup at Flax Hill Park. I can pick them up next week and if those of you who are so inclined to help will send an e-mail to the person who gave their e-mail address above and let them know which day is best for you I will be there and bring the supplies. After that we can focus on Ryan Park. Please get your kids to volunteer as well, this will be a great community service for them. If we have enough people, we can get both parks cleaned and hopefully usable for something other than illegal activities. Please feel free to e-mail me at NNHT@nnhtkids.org or go to our website http://nnhtkids.org and click on Blog and leave a message there. The blog is there for interactive conversations for parents, teens and community participation to discuss problems and solutions.

sorry forgot we have some people who simply do what they say their going to do. You have my support and apology nothing was ever directed towards you thanks Joanne. Thankyou as well to flaxhill@gmail. Its a great park my kids love it they go with their grandmother all the time.

  • 26 anonymous // Feb 21, 2008 at 12:00 pm

Great job, Joanne, thank you! It’s nice to see someone actually take some action, unlike 23/25 (GP) who just complain and criticize others. I’ll see you out there on the 1st/2nd!

  • 27 Anonymous // Feb 21, 2008 at 12:50 pm

Someone has to criticize #26 you seem so sure its always Mista G like he’s the only one who fabricates the facts.

  • 28 anonymous // Feb 21, 2008 at 12:52 pm

But what about the CRIME in Norwalk - doesn’t anyone out there care?????

  • 29 Joanne/NNHT // Feb 21, 2008 at 1:21 pm

#28-hopefully we can clean up the parks by getting the teens involved and once they see what they have accomplished, perhaps they will be more inclined to keep these places crime free and if the city and police department see what we are able to do , perhaps they too will help us achieve the goals of Norwalk helping our teens.

  • 30 Anonymous // Feb 21, 2008 at 1:27 pm

Its the type of crime when teens are using guns yards away from a cruiser to rob someone of their cell phone as in next to NEON its sending a message to others no where is it safe. Paintball guns are used in destroying homes when residents are working so hard to maintain a nice looking house and tires being slashed on cars where families are already making the decision on food or heat this week. Its enough when purses are snatched in downtown Sono but then the victims have to be assaulted on top of that. When most of this is not making the news to alert others what to look out for is yet another crime. Vetern police officers keep saying if the public only knew. That is what bothers some of us.

Tagging has become more than a eyesore its starting to cost money to clean up , of course you have to drive around parts of the city that are not safe to see what tagging has done.Where have you read the concern from the officials? I’m sure if they kids went and tagged the construction equipment out by 95 there would be outrage.

There are still a lot of us willing to help out the parks and the city. I know I went and picked up trash days after the oyster fest along with someone else ( they picked up much more, I did the path by the plaque and under the bridge where people live) after we all complained about it was easy to crititcize but easier to go and pick some of it up.Yes there is some civic pride stil left after blogging.

so back to helping out at Flax Hill park it was after the news broke that the park was closed on the blog and then the news story why because of crime did some in the city realize we have a problem yes it was criticism that got some of us here wasn’t it #26 ?

so support NNHT Its a positive group that is doing something .
