A little proactive wrok goes a long way;

“It’s been a steady rain,” he said. “Usually we have our problem when it comes all in one shot.”

Snow crews from the public works department began salting before the storm on Tuesday and the majority of them continued plowing until the early morning hours on Wednesday, according to Alvord.

“A little extra time spent last night has proven to be a good investment,” he said.

Some public works crew members in Norwalk spent Wednesday cleaning storm drains and clearing catch basins but the majority of the workers were allowed to rest.

“We’re trying to clear up catch basins so the rain can get into them,” Alvord said. “The guys who worked all day yesterday and through the night last night — we sent a lot of those guys home to get some sleep.”

Cheers.

    I kept hoping yesterday during the rain that never seemed to stop that my “flooding friends” were faring well.

    As I drove through the Silvermine section of Norwalk, New Canaan and Wilton last night and this morning it seemed to me that the Norwalk drainage was much better than in our neighboring towns.

    Maybe all of that proactive work did pay off. I sure hope so!

    I believe the timing was the key. As already said, it rained steadily over several hours. Not 3 inches in one or two hours. Mother nature controlled herself, knowing that Norwalk does not yet have this issue under control.

    Knowing first hand what its like to watch water start at 1″ and in a matter of minutes up to 15″ during heavy rain, I hope everyone faired well. Thankfully many , ( more would help during the budget process) people came out to bring the situation to the public eye and enough people on the last council were in touch enough to move forward funding for the flooding problems. Of course more is needed and should be allocated with this next budget and every avenue needs to be explored to get funding to help this situation. The monies and irreplaceable things that were lost is astounding. Some had to re-do their living quarters over and over again to the tune of thousands and thousands of dollars. Maybe Sal Corda will stop asking for so much wasted money so these people don’t have to live in fear of floating away one day.
