Norwalk: Tire Slashing Continues

Another weekend tire slashing spree hit Norwalk over the weekend.

The Advocte’s John Nickerson reports:

Saturday night into Sunday morning, 23 tires were slashed on 15 cars, Lt. Paul Resnick said.

Flattened tires were found during the day Sunday on Center Avenue Extension, Ward and O’Brien streets, Center and East avenues, East Rocks Road and Rudolf Lane, Resnick said.

Last weekend, tires were slashed late Saturday into Sunday on at least seven cars on East Avenue near the Norwalk Green.

Although the two episodes occurred less than a mile away, Resnick said that there is little else that connects them.

But Resnick said officers are looking into the possibility that the tire slashings could be connected.

Until police figure out who is puncturing the tires, Resnick suggested that people should park cars in their driveways and leave a light on around their vehicles in hopes of warding off more vandalism.

“It’s horrible,” said John Alcock, who spent $200 to replace the two rear tires on his wife’s Honda Accord that were slashed sometime Saturday night or Sunday morning on East Rocks Road. “It seems things are more destructive these days than it used to be,” he said.

Tires were punctured on eight vehicles parked on Ward Street and Center Avenue Extension.

Isaac Spearman had his four tires and spare slashed on his work van parked in the Center Avenue Extension cul-de-sac.

“I think it is pointless that they go around damaging cars because we are all working-class people and we need these cars for our jobs,” he said.

Police will give each of the affected areas “extra observation” on weekend nights, Resnick said.

It would help if you called the police dept and they said right away but when you are told there is up to a half hour wait because the city is busy what do you do?

we need to see a police report and time line on crime , other cities have it why not Norwalk?

we need the council to see for themselves we need more police.

John Nickerson was on to something great at one time a poilce report something that shows how busy they are and how three men to replace the suspended and injured is not enough on the dept.

Is it too much to ask for the facts here in Norwalk?

honestly we know the police are doing the best they can but does one actually buy into this next statement? Only if your car is parked and the Fiesta bar at fort point will it be safe from vandals at closing time.

Police will give each of the affected areas “extra observation” on weekend nights, Resnick said.

What Norwalk needs is more police on the street.

stand in line tires can be replaced, fee how it is to be unprotected and then tell your council they need to push public safety and hire more men.

City and police officials yesterday promised added police action at the Washington Village public housing complex after a weekend shooting at nearby Ryan Park, when a bullet pierced a young girl’s bedroom window

Al they want more cruisers , if we are not careful we will have more officers than cars. Its been said our fleet is in tough shape including new grant money cars.

Some of the fault lies within the police dept itself , we don’t have two man cruiser teams so as one officer said responding to a call from Cranberry section of the city to South Norwalk to backup a officer on a call the cruiser is taken a beating. Not to mention according to some officers there is an extra wait for the victim until backup arrives. Officers getting hurt because they are catching the perps but at a cost by themselves injuries and overtime is not being checked right now , there is some questions where we sit on overtime right now and no one seems to be getting an answer.

The council could at least show us they have some power and ask some questions.

    condition of the fleet

overtime as of now why wait till July

what about missing equipment from the police dept

why are police offices doing so much crosswalk details , do we pay and insure regular crossswalk gaurds

3 police dogs that are never available but to do construction detail

would two man teams save on gas? gas is not going down is it?

substation at the Homeless shelter is needed

and why after all that has happened are we still hearing from residents in Roodner Court the kids are still smoking pot in the halls , 1 death was not enough at xmas.

Flax Hill park has a locked gate , ever think after the last shots fired in the park at dusk the cruiser lights would of been a plus to the poor bastard walking in looking for a kid with a gun? Not to mention the clusterf@ck of cars in the driveway trying to back out onto flax hill with a locked gate. Still accoding to police sources no keys to the gate from rec.

why hasn’t the Norwalk police web site been up and running correctly so we can see where the slashing of tires have been? The Hour ran a picture of a most wanted in connected to the last murder on the front page what about the police site ?

It was a great election tool Dick wasn’t it? It hasn’t served the community well, be nice to know who the diddlers looked like when my kids are taking the bus.

Lets talk one more real problem shotgun blasts all the time in Norwalk harbour because of some low water rule making it ok to hunt, could anyone explain this absurd friggin rule the city has?

Maybe if one of the two people who use vets park gets shot we won’t have to open it anymore.

    the list goes on

Al I certainly feel for you guys up on the Hill after reading the article in the Hour it gave me a new look on your area one of the gems of Norwalk that simply gets trashed like the rest of the city.

  • 6 Anonymous // Feb 12, 2008 at 11:51 am

Wasn’t right after that article someone got jumped in front of the hospital where a gun was used by 5 assailants and the victim was beat up?

  • 7 Anonymous // Feb 13, 2008 at 1:43 am

#5 I’ll bet if Walter had been elected, there would be no crime. The perps would have stayed home and played canasta instead of slashing tires, they would have given up drugs for green tea and they would have preferred diplomacy over guns. I would even surmise that they’d join Habitat for Humanity and pitch-in to restore 93 East Avenue to it’s former glory. When Walter lost the election, Norwalk lost an opportunity to become the most peachy-keen small city in the United States. Too bad. Hope he runs again in ‘09.

Norwalk can’t handle the crime it has now and they want to add 1000 plus condo units which will add 2500 more people and cars to already over crowded Norwalk. Are they nuts we need a Mayor to look after this city before it’s too late. LESS IS MORE and god knows we need less, less crime, less cluster and condo type housing, add more single family houses. Norwalk is bursting at the seams and is ready to pop. We need to pay the Mayor more money so we can attract people that are qualified to run the city on behalf of its residents not the out of town developers. We need a police chief hired from anywhere but Norwalk to come in and police the city and the department. Zoning laws in Norwalk have to be changed so you can’t build a house where you can reach across from your window to your neighbors window to hand them a cup of sugar. We need zoning not to allow condos everywhere the current zoning laws are allowing Norwalk to like a mish mosh over crowded place to live. Affordable housing Norwalk took on more than its fair share let other towns chip in, Norwalk can’t afford any more affordable housing.

HELLO EVERONE this is what myself and LOTS of other people have been saying now for YEARS.But the powers to be keep saying that there is NO impact BULLSH>T. Maybe if they looked at all the new development as a whole they would change there minds.#8 you are right we have been saying that the infrastructure can`t handle any more but all we here is there is NO IMPACT. Well look at our SCHOOLS,POLICE,FIRE,ROADS,TRAFFIC,Any of our public services all say we need more money and people to operate,if they need more now what are they going to do five or ten years from now.I am not against growth we need it to be a healthy town I am for smart growth and preserving our history we should move forward but VERY cautiously and make sure were looking out for the GREATER impact down the road.CRIME is out of control now and we have 8500000 people what happens when we reach 9500000. All I`am saying is if we don`t get control NOW we will never have it and Norwalk will be a place that no one will want to live.THINK ABOUT IT.By the way #5 Thank you for your coments, yes we do get trashed but our neihgborhood group is trying to make the QUALITY OF LIFE here BETTER and we will keep trying until we get it right. Also #6 Yes there was an article in the HOUR about four guys stopping a car on Maple st one guy had a gun and the police were called the guys were arrested but nothing more was to be said.On a lighter note we are still moveing forward looking for a park and things are looking good someone came forward things are looking great more to come Friday.

a suggestion support Joh Nickerson he does a great job on the police report when allowed by the editors.Write the Advocate let them know what it is we want to read I’m sure they will be accomodating if not I’m sure the new owners will listen but first try the Advocate the Stamford office thats where the big brass hands out.

When one complains about crime one has to read about it as well we have so many skeptics or others who want there pork barrell project to go thru the budget process. They want to focus on what they want now who cares about what is needed tommorrow by the residents.

Election time we heard promises and goals coated with achievments big deal we still have what we had then a understaffed overworked police dept.

The budget process is a joke each year the bills are held over till august not reflecting the true budget of most departments.

Why not an audit before the new budgets, show the condition of the depts so the new budgets reflect what has to be fixed replaced and planned on.

we are all asking for crime prevention what do have now left to throw at crime?

What is the overtime now last we heard we had what 65 percent used?

What is wrong with knowing how our city is running right now. tes the fire and DPW are not asking the police dept to come clean they will have to as well.

Fuel for the equipment is the biggest red herring we have how many outlets do we have for fuel?

Why not one spot made abvailable 24/7 fire police highway ect all have seperate outlets why? Its the same stuff going into the equipment let them all pay by card its done elsewhere. No card no fuel its simple. Its all done by computer for a read out on a daily basis.

with all the tanks we have around the city why not just two?

Buying in bulk always worked for private businesses

Police are investigating a reported kidnapping at gunpoint of two teenage girls this morning from an apartment in the Monterey Village housing complex.

A witness told police both men were carrying handguns when they entered the apartment. She said they grabbed the girls and walked away with them. No vehicle was spotted exiting the complex at the time of the incident. Detectives are at the scene

Harold Cobin is the reporter from the Hour

  • 12 Anonymous // Feb 13, 2008 at 7:48 pm

Looks like the part about the teens is false. The news said no one was taken when the men fled on foot.

  • 13 Anonymous // Feb 13, 2008 at 8:14 pm

thats great two guns running around woodward ave, its the wild wild Norwalk then.

  • 14 Anonymous // Feb 13, 2008 at 8:56 pm

NORWALK — Despite initial reports, police say no one was kidnapped at gunpoint Wednesday afternoon at Monterey Village, although they are searching for two armed men.

At approximately 12:40 p.m., police were called to an apartment in building 3 of the South Norwalk housing complex on a report that two men with handguns had abducted two teenage girls.

At 4:20 p.m., police spokesman Lt. Paul Resnick said “all people have been accounted for.”
Resnick said the person reporting the kidnapping had no malicious intent, and it appears two men with guns had been at the apartment.
Resnick said people questioned by police have been giving various accounts of what occurred and detectives are investigating the incident.

  • 15 Anonymous // Feb 13, 2008 at 9:14 pm

sad we all bought the first story as fact didn’t even for a moment think anything other than another crime. You would think if there was witnesses we would hear descriptions of the two with guns. maybe Stamford police will leak the deatils sure as hell Norwalk won’t give us anything to look for.

police spokesman usually give descriptions when the perps go back into the area, if they jumped on 95 maybe thats something else but as in the past very little faith is given when two guns return to the streets and the kids are also on the same streets.

Mr mayor please ban those house parties we have had enough :)

  • 16 Anonymous // Feb 14, 2008 at 11:27 pm

Here we go again. It is amazing the damage a kid or two can cause when they have nothing better to do then let all the hot air out of crime statistics. Tonights tire slashing perhaps will make Sundays Hour, than again there is only few hours remaining to deadline. One thing for sure there are going to be alot of angry folks in the morning.

  • 17 Anonymous // Feb 14, 2008 at 11:33 pm

Anyone who lives in the Kellogg, Grandview, Dover area better go check their tires. Some little vagrants are out slashing tires again. Sounds like they got quite a few again. not just one street but several.

  • 18 Anonymous // Feb 15, 2008 at 1:14 am

The sad part of all this is an officer has said the city is just not equipped to deal with this or any other crime and simultaneously maintain a presence in the city.

  • 19 NorEaster // Feb 15, 2008 at 6:32 am

What Norwalk needs are better parents. Period.

  • 20 Anonymous // Feb 15, 2008 at 8:01 pm

Norwalk — Tires on more than five cars were slashed Thursday night in the area of Grandview Avenue. Police had full reports on five cars, each of which had both tires cut on the driver’s side. Residents at four addresses on Kellogg Street also reported tires slashed, but police were not able to provide full reports on these incidents Friday morning.

This marked the third time in two weeks that multiple tire slashings were reported.

this was by Harold Corbin from the Hour

  • 21 Anonymous // Feb 16, 2008 at 2:50 am

Lets see more tire slahings and now window smashings, the emergency shelter evacuated residents into the cold after a fire at the facility, a robbery, three, four assults and DUI’s, oh and another cruiser wrecked. Toss in the regular inebriated patrons that vomit and pass out in the middle of the street, just another quite Friday night in Norwalk, Hat City.

  • 22 Anonymous // Feb 16, 2008 at 10:57 am

most desired destination in Fairfield County as one would say for the homeless, drunks and drug dealers another handgun assault downtown sono according to officers working Fort Apache last night.

Kudos to the men and women in blue who swiftly apprehended two suspects just five minutes after the two allegedly swiped some property from someone’s yard last night.

    Good work guy’s.

Chief, please lets get Tasers on (every patrol persons belt). Tom Tom’s, Defibs, Dash/Cage Cams with wireless audio in all cruisers at all times.

Those simple requisitions, alone, will save lives, property and claims.

Chief, leave a worthy legacy, give your officers the tools they need.

Cruiser cams with remote audio, certainly is an excellent tool for evidence and promotes professionalism. Funding, its out there, just have to ask.

Lets get the tasers on every patrol persons belt, lets get the tom toms (operable G.P.S.) in every patrol vehicle and dash and cage cams with audio. What’s wrong with putting two men per car at certain critical times?

How about a horse for the bars and events?

A combination of fully utilizing technologies currently available with time tested techniques, like knowing your beat, old school foot work for example, is what produces results.

Let’s just give the men and women, on the line, the tools they need to do the job they signed up to do. And can we do it with class to empower pride in all.

The beat cops are doing their best, most till their completely exhausted, shift after shift after shift.

Is it not honorable or politically correct to expect support from leaders?

MILFORD — The city’s traffic-control team just got a whole new look.
Three sleek, new Dodge Chargers that arrived this month and are earmarked for the Traffic Enforcement Unit are the latest in Police Chief Keith Mello’s push to revamp the department’s image.

“I want the Traffic Enforcement Unit to stand out,” he said.

Since Mello was appointed chief in April 2006, he’s changed the department’s uniforms and had its cruisers repainted from blue to black-and-white.

Now, he hopes the new traffic control cars, a deviation from the traditional Ford Crown Victoria cruisers but priced in the same range, will get motorists’ attention. They should, he warned
