Rell and Democratic Legislative Leaders Announce Judicial Reforms

I’ll have to give this more thought later on, but the theme coming out of this announcement is that a bipartisan attempt to stem deficiencies in the parole system is gaining momentum. A special session is being planned for the legislature to vote on the reforms. From the Courant:

The Cheshire tragedy, she said, “took away from us our confidence in the criminal justice system” and “exposed the flaws” in the system.

Norwalk: City Budget Shows Surplus

The BET meeting contained the news that the city was going to see a higher budget surplus than anticipated last September. From teh hour:

Hamilton, while pleased with the 2006-07 surplus, described it as “not terribly unexpected.” He pointed to other aspects of the city’s financial performance, which he considers equally as important. They include a relatively small growth in total government expenditures.

“Total expenses for the entire city organization went from $276 million to $279. 8 million in ‘07,” Hamilton said. “The overall spending of the city went up by 1.5 percent. That’s a well-constrained expenditure growth.”

Norwalk: Young Dems and DFA Events Tonight

From a press release:
The Southern Fairfield County Young Democrats will be having a meeting on January 9, 2007 at 6pm at the Silver Star Dinner. The meeting will run for 1 hour and will feature guest speakers on behalf of Presidential candidates Obama, Clinton, and Edwards.

Immediately following the meeting, at 7pm, will be a meeting of Democracy for America at the Silver Star Diner. DFA will be showing the youth vote documentary “18 in 08” by ’06 Weston High School graduate David Burstein.

Norwalk: Ch-ch-changes On the BOE Budget process

Following last night’s tandem meeting extravaganza, I caught up with BOE members to discus what transpired while I typed away at the common council member. It seems seismic shifts of positions are abounding on the BOE. The operating budget drew a 4-4-1 vote because of a couple of factors. First, some BOE members, notably Rivas and Mosbey felt that they were not given enough time to review the budget following its introduction. Rivas was the abstention and Chiaramonte, Kimmel, Iannacone, and Mosbey were the votes.
