Monroe Republicans Want Finch To Give Up Senate Seat

Bridgeport contributes more to the weird political landscape than any other Connecticut city. Chris Caruso is still contesting a Democratic primary that he lost by 270 votes. Bill Finch won that primary and went on to win election as Mayor of Bridgeport. And in the latest episiode, is keeping his State Senate seat for now.

This, has become a bone for Republicans in Monroe, who are within that senatorial district. From the Connecticut Post:

The Town Council is expected to act Monday on a resolution asking state Sen. Bill Finch to relinquish his legislative seat now that he is the new mayor of Bridgeport.
The Park City is the state’s largest, requiring Finch’s full attention and devotion for both economic and social success, the resolution states.
Finch’s 22nd Senate District includes Monroe and Trumbull, in addition to part of Bridgeport.
The resolution is being considered with full respect for Finch and the fine job he has done as senator, said Councilman Patrick O’Hara, a Republican who introduced the proposal.
The council meeting is set for 8 p.m. in Town Hall.
“I don’t think he can serve the needs of the largest city in Connecticut and serve the needs of the senatorial district as well,” O’Hara said Friday.
But at least one council member thinks the resolution may be a bad idea because it has the potential to alienate Finch, a Democrat.
“I don’t want to see him in two jobs,” said council Chairwoman Enid Lipeles, another Republican. “I don’t think he has the right to be in two jobs, but I know this will alienate him when he finds out about it. It’s a brand-new government and I don’t want to alienate him. I know we’re waiting for the courts to have an opinion.”

Political maneuvering, nothing more. There isn’t much of an issue here.

Finch isn’t going to keep the second salary, and the remaining short session is not going to be significant to Monroe. And the Republican Council knows that perfectly well.

More to come on this, and on what actually matters.
