Norwalk: Krummel Echoes Budget Worries To BOE

It would appear that common council members of all political stripes are singing the same tune when it comes to the BOE. You could say it can be hummed along to “Meet Me In St. Louis”, since meeting with the council, long before Dr. Sal Corda sets pen to paper to bubble in his budget requests, would get the financial machinery in motion. Meanwhile Bruce Kimmel reminds his fellow BOE members that there’s this thing called the finance committee that needs to meet.

Will Susan Hamilton decide to do the right thing? Stay tuned. Your next opportunity apparently is Monday. A BOE meeting at 7PM.

Krummel said to the Alexandra Fenwick of the Advocate, “The Board of Education’s operation budget is going to be between 55 (percent) and 60 percent of the city budget. We want to work as close as we can with Board of Ed people to have their budget approved. We want to meet with them quite early on to discuss their concerns and understand their problems.”

That’s a start. But Krummel also said:

Krummel, chairman of the Public Works Committee, said he plans to meet with the city’s finance director and Board of Estimate and Taxation to ensure that adequate funds are provided.

“The city administration is Republican, and Democrats will naturally want to hammer away and ask, ‘Why aren’t you giving the Public Works Department more money to do a good job on the roads?’ ” Krummel said. “We will be trying to get the necessary money for repairs, and we know that all the money that is needed won’t be forthcoming.”

As a long time member of Public WOrks, Krummel should know that demanding financial accountability on what has been allocated and remains unspent in the DPW budget is perhaps the first place to start. No use throwing them more money when they cant tell you how many roads have been paved, trees pruned, sewer manholes replaced etc. Data is in order.

    Turf, you said:
“long before Dr. Sal Corda sets pen to paper to bubble in his budget requests” It should of said “BALLOON his buget request”. I hope Sal knows we will all be watching as he tries to “pad” his budget.

    With the statement:
“…We will be trying to get the necessary money for repairs, and we know that all the money that is needed won’t be forthcoming…”

Krummel is setting up a showdown to embarrass the Republicans and to cover his butt for failing, as PW Commissioner to pave the roads in his own district and avert blame if the flooding problem isn’t solved fast enough. So much for bi-partisanship. Typical Rat.

Bill should spend more time explaining why he voted against funding routine storm programs instead of worrying about budgets.

Post # 2 makes an interesting interpretation of Mr. Krummels remarks. If Mr. Krummel is of that level of strategic policy making than the democrats have a warrior to stand strong against the railroads run by noncompromise inc.

If the citizens of Norwalk have such voice’s of reason and foresight as well as forethought working for the citizens, we should be greatfull to have a persons of this inteligence and dedication in public service.

Perhaps the time has come to examine the compensation of all public servants as well as the council members. Merit pay is universal in business. It has been shown by Joe Klein and Mike Bloomberg in NY that merit pay does work in the public schools.

Perhaps if merit pay could be integrated in local and state governments we could see, at worst, a better quality selection of elected and appointed officials in critical judgement positions of authority, at best, competition in public service to actually serve the public.

If Mr. Krummel or Mr, Kimmel are standing for the people, the voices of reason of accountability and transparency, rather than special interests, shouldn’t we not encourage them, applaud them?

Finally #2, you began with a logical presentation of your interpretation.
Ending your comment with a playground insult, erases any validity the argument you present may have.

Reading the posts, I think it is disrespectful and downright plain ole ornery to make personal attacks. We must find ways and the means to focus on the hugely critical decisions at hand. We the people elected our representatives to work on making things better. Enough of the amatuerish assaults, lets start working TOGETHER to find solutions.

Another interpretation of what Mr. Krummel stated was; that he understood that the departments need to be triaged with the critical receiving the critical response needed.

Mr Kimmel, at the last BOE meeting, simply asked his colleagues why the board should not look into exploring grants to open more preschool spots?

When these questions and real life acknowledgements of issues that need focus provoke personal attacks without substance it illustrates, vividly, the challenges we all face.

Mr. Krummel and Mr. Kimmel are accepting their responsibilities. Wouldn’t it be a wonderful life if we could see more of that spirit.

Mr. Krummel has already set the stage for what appers to be a long and tedious two years of council business. He has made it clear he intends to do everything in his power to block anything republican. His behavior at the very first council meeting was abominable and his steamroller attitude will cause much dissention.

well just maybe Mr Krummel cares enough about the city to simply do that, battle for the people who have been under the city steamroller for years.Show how pathetic the condition of the city is in being bullied by 1 old man.

You go Bill show them why the rest of them should of voted.

Ever think he trusted people in charge to tell him the truth? He had no reason to doubt our depts and its budgets we were all suppose to be working for the same thing.

But then came the blog and people who were informed that could mention particular cases where waste and neglect are present. You really think the new members of the council are tame? I imagine without naming names they are on the board knowing their Bill complex will have to surface as well showing what they are not happy about as well.I thinks the stage is being set for a very interesting process, simply give others to get their feet wet.Until then Bill give them what they didn’t expect accountability it will certainly do some of the dept heads in.

Streets are still yet to be sanded, the fire dept is now out calling in streets that need attention , but if you go over the Smith street there is no ice or crap on the roads its only in the city where hills are.

Typical response after calling the highway dept on a bad situation is to have a truck full of dirt drive by without applying anything, thy have to go back and get a sander, what kind of crap was that ?

cars sliding into each other could only mean slippery street correct?
