The Republican caucus is busy these days, today the announcement that Kelly L. Straniti has been voted in as Minority Leader. Rick McQuaid served as Minority Leader this past year and had this to say, “Kelly has been a great team player during our bi-partisan council over the past two years and will be a great leader of our caucus. Her proven record of listening before she makes a decision will be a welcome approach to the council in the coming year. She will not be leading by her own agenda, but what is the best for the City of Norwalk. Councilwoman Straniti has been an able and strong advocate for her District. We are pleased that she is adding to her experience by stepping into a leadership role”

Kelly Straniti was first voted to the common council representing District D in 2005. She has been a strong advocate for the Broad River Neighborhood Association as well as other community organizations long before she became a common council member. Kelly has worked well within the Republican caucus and with others on the council. The Republicans are showing a strong commitment to encouraging their young politicians into leadership roles. Kelly will serve as Minority Leader though November 2008.

    Excellent choice!
Having worked with Kelly on the council and as personal friend I can tell you she is one dedicated lady! Although she has a young son and a husband, Kelly has shown true leadership by her commitment to the town. She is one of the most helpful and assessable people I know and she has put the City of Norwalk as her top priority, next to her family. She will be a fresh young voice with an extremely vast knowledge of where Norwalk needs to be going and how to get there and will work well with both sides of the aisle.

Finally someone who gives a S@#T about Norwalk. Lets see if the Dems try to stymie her!

Its good to see a woman and a young person in a leadership role.
I attended some of the Council meetings and been to a couple of the public forums Ms Straniti and Mr Hempstead did. Seems like a capable and concerned public official, and a grasp of the concerns of her constituents. In talking to some individuals she is very responsive when called upon.

Why don’t the Dems nominate a woman to be council chair? Didn’t they have that event on The Green highlighting their female candidates? It would be nice to see the Dems put their money where their mouth is.

Personally, I think Reverend Bolden would make a great council chair. She is an independent thinker and she works well with everyone on the council.

    Just a thought.

Congrats to Ms. Straniti! Great choice!

I think Ms. Straniti is a good choice for Minority Leader, a fresh new face in the position. I have to agree with #5 as well, Reverend Bolden would be a great choice for Majority Leader. Councilman Bondi was a terrific Council President, and I think he would be a wise choice to do so again.

I am proud of our Norwalk Republican party. Congratulations Kelly.

  • 9 Miserable #23 // Nov 18, 2007 at 9:50 pm

I’m not miserable about Kelly becoming Minority Leader. Congratulations.

Maybe she’ll actually attend the next meeting if they throw her a bone like this…

  • 11 anon // Nov 19, 2007 at 8:38 am

Now Gail, Stop picking on Kelly, She beat you fair & square. You know Kelly has an excellent attendance record. She is also a fine family person. Her childs birthday & a family vaction are two very good reasons she couldn’t attend. She has accomplished quite a bit in her public life and will continue to do so. Everyone but you, Gaul, err Gail, is proud of and happy to have Kelly there for us. She is a fine example for everyone, young & old. So give it a rest Gail.

    You go, Kelly!

A sincerely concerned member of the council!

  • 13 Anonymous // Nov 19, 2007 at 9:47 am

Well, then, maybe Kelly was shopping for shoes on the nights she missed those two Council meetings in a row.

  • 14 See Post # 11 // Nov 19, 2007 at 9:48 am

and those are the ONLY 2 council meetings she ever missed.

  • 15 anonymous // Nov 19, 2007 at 10:19 am

blah blah blah. Sometimes Council members can’t make it to all the meetings. They do have families, and lifes. They all miss them, quite freaking out over it.

  • 16 Anonymous // Nov 19, 2007 at 10:55 am

#10-try looking at the attendance record for the past 2 years. I think only 1 or 2 members only missed one meeting and I think maybe 2 or 3 missed 2 meetings so there are a whole lot of council members who missed more than 2 meetings, This is a non issue since Ms Straniti as was explained above has a son whose birthday just happened to fall on a council night and a family vacation fell on a council night.

#7 - If Ms Straniti is minority leader and Bondi is majority leader, that means there are two republicans as minority and minority leaders. You will know what I mean if you have followed council votes these last two years.

  • 18 Anonymous // Nov 19, 2007 at 3:00 pm

#17-What you wrote is hard to follow but, On the council there is a President(usually of the majority party) Then there is the majority leader and then the minority leader. If you mean how Bondi voted over the last 2 years then perhaps you may also want to look at how everyone voted over the last 2 years and see it was usually active debate and followed by mostly bi-partisan voting for what was best for the city. Except for a bit of grandstanding there was a good repore on the council and that has led to the discourse amoungst dem leaders and those who chose not to return. People have to start working for the city and not party leaders. Do what is right for Norwalk and not someone’s agenda.

#18 - I certainly agree our elected officials need to start working for what’s best for the city. But Bondi has always had personal agendas and his private deals with the republicans are known.

  • 20 Anonymous // Nov 19, 2007 at 5:29 pm

#17, I do know what that means, as I’ve gone to many council meetings. But, if the Democrats to get stuff done, they should make Fred happy. Unhappy Fred could very well just vote along with the Republicans, and make life much harder for the other side.

If you knew anything about politics, and the Council, you’d know that.

  • 21 Anonymous // Nov 19, 2007 at 6:01 pm

Will she get a riding crop to go with those shoes?

  • 22 Anonymous // Nov 20, 2007 at 12:15 am

The Republicans have made an excellent choice in having Kelly Straniti as their leader. Though some here like to make jokes about her shopping for shoes and such, I don’t think that at all detracts in any way from what a wonderful young woman she is. It just so happens to be she is also beautiful with an great sense of fashion. In addition to being a committed mother and wife she has proven to be someone who always puts Norwalk first and cares very much about the community. I can’t wait to see what the future holds in store for her. Way to go Kelly!!!

  • 23 Anonymous // Nov 20, 2007 at 8:08 am

I heart Kelly! She is sooooo cool! I want her as my Facebook buddy!

  • 24 just a comment // Nov 20, 2007 at 3:49 pm

#20 - Why does anyone have to make Fred happy? And you are saying that to know anything about politics is to know that it’s all crooked and therefore shut up and accept it. And Fred already does vote with Republicans more often than not because of his personal agendas. That’s how he got his kid on the HC and invited to 93 East Ave. Handrinos wedding.

  • 25 Fred Tournage // Nov 20, 2007 at 3:57 pm

    Re post 25

Keep Fred happy so the status quo remains the same. Same old, same old.

  • 26 Anonymous // Nov 20, 2007 at 6:28 pm

#24, The Democrats have a slim majority on the council, and one or two votes make a difference. Fred normally sits on the fence, and if he gets passed on for someone newer, he may just keep voting with the Republicans, and help them out even more. Make him Council President, and maybe he’ll vote more with the Dems.

  • 27 Fred Tournage // Nov 20, 2007 at 6:42 pm

#26 “Make him Council President, and maybe he’ll vote more with the Dems.”

I would not bet anything of value on that.
