Veterans Day Speaker and Program Set

The Norwalk Veterans Memorial Committee has established the program for the annual Veterans Day Ceremony to be conducted this year on Monday, November 12, in the Norwalk Concert Hall. The theme of the ceremony: Honor Our Veterans—Support Our Troops.

The event will commence with a free concert by the American Festival Band at 9:30 a.m. in the Concert Hall. The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. to allow for the traditional moment of silence at 11 a.m. The American Festival Band will feature soloist Alison Faye, whose rendition of The Battle Hymn of the Republic has become an unforgettable highlight to this event.

Special tribute will be paid to all veterans during a medley of the service songs and young veterans of Iraq or Afghanistan will be honored individually.

The guest speaker this year is James “Jake” McNiece, a unique World War II veteran. Jake was born and raised in Oklahoma during the Depression. In 1942, he joined the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division. His antics and adventures provide the inspiration for his book: “The Filthy Thirteen—From the Dustbowl to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest: The 101st Airborne’s Most Legendary Squad of Combat Paratroopers.” Jake experienced four combat jumps and fought from the D-Day invasion of Normandy to the liberation of Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest at Berchdesgarten. Jake jumped into Holland (“Operation Market Garden”) and, after 78 days of sustained combat, thought that the offer of a 72-hour pass was a bit chintzy; you may hear him tell what liberties he took with that short respite from combat. Perhaps his most vital mission was to volunteer to lead the pathfinder team that marked the drop zones for over 600 planeloads of desperately needed supplies for the surrounded and beleaguered 101st Airborne Division at Bastogne. Despite all his heroics Jake never got promoted to the rank of PFC.

Jake’s “Filthy Thirteen” were a reckless group whose saving grace was that they inflicted more damage on the Germans than on US Army MPs. During the course of the war, over 30 men passed through the ranks of this elite fighting unit. They inspired the movie, “The Dirty Dozen,” and remain a legend within the ranks of the 101st Airborne Division. Jake was their leader.

He and his lovely wife, Martha, will travel from their home in Ponca City, Oklahoma, to spend Veterans Day in Norwalk, and visit Brien McMahon High School on Tuesday, November 13.

Following the ceremony, Jake will sign copies of his book in the lobby of City Hall.

Kevin Poruban has promised Doug Hempstead a chairmanship if he supports Fred Bondi as council president. They are cutting a deal to prevent Carvin Hilliard from being council president.

  • 3 yeah right! // Nov 9, 2007 at 10:40 am

Kevin Poruban has nothing to say about anything. He lost the election and he’s gone! If Doug Hempstead gets the Chairmanship its because the ELECTED council chooses to put him in that position. Kevin never got elected in 2005 and lost again. How much clout do you think he has?

  • 4 MGeake // Nov 9, 2007 at 11:25 am

Wish I could make the Veterans Day ceremonies, but I work for a company that’s open that day, and I used what vacation I had left on the campaign :o

  • 5 MGeake // Nov 9, 2007 at 11:28 am

I also wish I could observe the recount on Tuesday. I hope it will be done by hand, ’cause just running the ballots through the same [type of] machine running the same software isn’t going to prove anything!

  • 6 Anonymous // Nov 9, 2007 at 1:27 pm

Now that it’s leaf season it’s pathetic that the public is sujected to 120 decibels of racket from leaf blowers from hired help. The same job could be done much quieter by the 12-24 year old residents with a rake–WAIT !!!–that won’t work because the 12-24 year olds are in training for their IVY LEAGUE M.D. (Master Delegator) degrees and doing any WORK is beneath their exalted psyches.

  • 7 Anonymous // Nov 9, 2007 at 1:33 pm

Well hopefully all this noise will be the city cleaning the leaves from the storm drains as well.

  • 8 Anonymous // Nov 9, 2007 at 1:38 pm

don’t count on it they hired a oustide contractor to do the leaves in the storm drains where have you been?

  • 9 Anonymous // Nov 9, 2007 at 1:43 pm

As long as they get cleaned and there isn’t more flooding then this is a good thing.

  • 10 Anonymous // Nov 9, 2007 at 1:47 pm

the DPW workers are all busy standing doing nothing in East Norwalk while independant truck drivers direct traffic. You would think with all the reports of trafic hazards and injuries we would have police on the street instead of 12 - 24 year olds directing traffic.

I thinks the residents should go see this for themselves its comical to see all the DPW workers standing next to the signs saying nothing doing nothing but talk an their cell phones waiting for a photo opt.

I think they are in training to become mayors if you ask me. :) :) :)

  • 11 Anonymous // Nov 9, 2007 at 1:52 pm

#9 i think you missed the point , besides the streets that have been flooding for years have very little to do with leaves, and the sewer plant will double in volume according to reports, means we treat stormwater as well that would normally go into the sea.

Hence as long as its treated we pay for that extra too whats the problem?

    Chlorine cost money big money

care to pay my tax bill also ?

  • 12 anonymous // Nov 9, 2007 at 2:33 pm

Yeah, #6, there a so many 12-24 yr olds in Norwalk who will go to an Ivy League School. You must live in that other Norwalk, on some other planet.

  • 13 Anonymous // Nov 9, 2007 at 3:46 pm

Positive thinking #12! I bet the 12-24 year olds of this area would love the encouragement and belief. Maybe you should start a free tutoring group.

  • 14 Shorefrontgroupie // Nov 9, 2007 at 3:50 pm

and I will supply the flak jackets for the kids in South Norwalk to attend such classes #13

  • 15 Mike Lyons // Nov 9, 2007 at 4:36 pm

#5 - Mike, the recount will be done by hand (checked in with the Secretary of State).

  • 16 Anonymous // Nov 9, 2007 at 4:37 pm

Again the same old negative attitude with no desire for change. Useless.

  • 17 Mr Greenpeace // Nov 9, 2007 at 4:56 pm

    # 16 or no desire to open the can of worms, if you do it will cost money, we have the volunteers look around there are plenty. We all want our kids and their friends to have a better life thats a given. Most of us want to get them through to high school and thats a challenge in itself.

I just looked back to see how this started over leaf blowing. My kids own a rake and a 8 1/2 horse Bobcat Blower. Make friends with my kids and they do your lawn. Make enemies with them they blow the leaves into your yard.

I’m sorry I find humor in that, sometimes the blog needs it.

  • 18 nwlknative // Nov 9, 2007 at 7:48 pm

I do find humor in that, Mr. Greenpeace. People need to lighten up a little.

  • 19 Coach // Nov 9, 2007 at 11:07 pm

Slap a hornets nest, expect to get stung no matter how fast you run. Sit on your couch as children slaughter eachother and accept things as they are, is a disservice to past generations who have given everything and future generations who will have nothing left to give. Lighten up? Hell no!! Time to stand up. Will the leaders with integrity, compassion and vison PLEASE STAND UP. Leave the carpetbags at home, pack extra balls.

  • 20 Shorefrontgroupie // Nov 9, 2007 at 11:25 pm

we need a coach come to think about it,you want the job? you should of run for office.

  • 21 nasal invasion // Nov 10, 2007 at 1:00 am

Does anyone know I there has been a funding allocation to expand the sewage treatment facility?
With the repeated spills and fish kills and that ever lingering disgusting order we have occuring now, how are we going to handle all that crap that comes down the pipe after the developers are on their yaughts off bermuda far far away from the smells they leave behind.

  • 22 Karen Doyle Lyons/Registrar of Voters // Nov 10, 2007 at 9:25 am

Norwalk will re-canvass two districts A & E - 7 polling sites due to a close vote. All ballots from each polling site will be hand counted with witnesses as prescribed by law. The process will take place in Norwalk City Hall at 10:00 am on Tuesday, November 13, 2007.

  • 23 ???? // Nov 10, 2007 at 9:50 am

I have a question, the old machines only allowed you to vote for someone one time but with the new ballot I saw that you could vote twice for the same person under the working family line. Does that mean they got two votes from one person? Are those being recounted as well or did the machine disqualify the second vote?

  • 24 just wondering // Nov 10, 2007 at 11:24 am

Will that include a recount of the working family line? I know some people voted on both lines. Shouldn’t they all be counted? Machines do make mistakes.

  • 25 Mr Greenpeace // Nov 10, 2007 at 12:11 pm

#22 there is talk on nov 19 the water pollution control board may be addressing the smell , its on the agenda I’m told.

to the voters I think we should get that Stamford WWF to set up a ring at vets park next election and let the candidates duke it out there, charge admission and let Fred cook some more burgers, That guy who did the jazz fest can set it up but who will sell the popcorn and cotton candy?

this way it will attract more voters and keep it civil at the same time pull in some tax dollars to pay for all this overtime we have been spending on recounts and ballots.

In this corner it will be local 830 and in the opposing corner well you get idea.

I just hope the ballots are not being stored at the Museum

yes machines make mistakes but so don’t voters look what happened this year. :) :) :) they both failed us.

  • 26 MGeake // Nov 10, 2007 at 12:58 pm

#25 interesting idea. Will I get to use my cane?!?

  • 27 Mr Greenpeace // Nov 10, 2007 at 1:15 pm

in your case your armed with intellect, you will battle but you will prevail from the sounds of it.Besides you would need a larger corner with all that are in it. :)

  • 28 Vet Park Junkie // Nov 10, 2007 at 2:00 pm

GP & Geake, that would be fun.

    Others,
Over at the Woodworkers Club they are turning pens for the troops. It goes until 4:00 so there is still time. They just helped my boy turn a pen.

    It was fun.

  • 29 karen lyons // Nov 10, 2007 at 7:00 pm

Yes, the old machines would be blocked from anyone trying to vote for the same candidate twice. With the new paper ballots some voters did try to work the system by voting for the same person twice. The tabulators worked very well, they were programed to only count one vote for that person. It was then a count for “Unknown party” and added to the Working Families Party per the SOTS. The local ROV’s have no choice as to the system.

  • 30 karen lyons // Nov 10, 2007 at 7:01 pm

Yes, all votes for all parties will be recounted.
