Norwalk: Union Wants New Vote on Corda Contract

Yesterday the Norwalk Teachers Union went to Federal court to present its case that the BOE acted improperly regarding the vote on Corda’s contract.

“What we’re asking the court to do is require the board to put a discussion of the contract (on the agenda) at a regular meeting,” lawyer Steven Frederick said. “Do it again.”
The one difference, Frederick told U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Smith, the Norwalk Federation of Teachers and residents this time will have had plenty of time to review the three-year contract so they can share their thoughts with the school board.

Norwalk: Dems In Flux

Following the defeat (likely) of 3 incumbents, plus the the 2 incumbents who chose not to seek re-election, Bill Krummel, Doug Sutton. Fred Bondi, Carvin Hilliard and Phylis Bolden are the seasoned council members for the Dems. Which makes the rather odd statements out of Democratic Town Committee Chair Galen Wells and Kevin Poruban seem oblivious to the realities of the election.

“We now have new people on the council, who are going to reevaluate positions on the issues. Now we have a real Democratic majority. I’m pleased that we have a Democratic majority. That doesn’t mean we aren’t going to cooperate (with Republicans) on good things.”

Norwalk: Moccia Outlines Priorities

Heading into his second term Mayor Moccia spoke to the Hour about his priorities. A charter review committee might be in the near future as he examines the term of mayor and council salaries.

Reducing flooding, repaving streets, getting more state dollars, advancing redevelopment projects, tackling rising energy costs, improving the South Norwalk Train Station, building a new fire headquarters, and putting a ballot question to voters on four-year mayoral terms.

On Wednesday, a day after handily winning reelection, Republican Richard A. Moccia explained to The Hour what he’d like to get done during his second two-year term in office.

Norwalk: The Mysterious Invisible Cloud of Stink

Yes it does smell around the Smith street station. You can smell it in SoNo, often at night, but lately during the day too. It used to be a smell that happened, much like DPW Director Alvord suggested, once a day when they must have been doing something that initiated an airing out of smell. These days the smell is at all times of the day. Nothing like a sewage smell to go with that outdoor dining.

There’s a nice spot I discovered eight in front of the entrance to the Maritime Parking garage on Water Street that had a strong smell going. I traced it back to a manhole.
