Norwalk: Anecdotal Election Coverage

by turfgrrl

November 6th, 2007 · 51 Comments

The upshot of talking to the frigid candidates at Columbus, West Rocks and St. Mary’s was that everyone said it was cold, that the turnout seemed low, and that they were looking forward to 8pm.

There were numerous theories to what that all meant.

In the rest of the state, an altercation made the Hartford Courant as supporters of incumbent mayor Perez clashed with challenger Sate Rep. Minnie Gonzalez. The optical scanner did not like wet ballots in South Windsor, Hartford, and New Britain. In Bridgeport, there are 7 candidates running for mayor which matches the Democrat voter registration ratio of 7 to 1.

News 12 seems to predicting a victory for Moccia since their campaign coverage is based at the Norwalk Inn.

I’ll be posting results as they trickle in to City Hall tonight.

Who was outside of Columbus and what did they say?

  • 2 X-GOP // Nov 6, 2007 at 10:06 pm

It is a sad day for Norwalk as we have a dick for our mayor again. Hard to believe that the few residents that turned out to vote were happy with the last two years. Wait till you see what’s in store for the next two years; traffic, over development, a failing infrastructure and best of all your taxes will go up to pay for the big mess. The dems better get started now in order to find someone to run next election. Great job Norwalk voters, hope you drown in your flooding basements.

Remember what I said about the will of the majority and no whining

  • 4 Anonymous // Nov 6, 2007 at 10:23 pm

12,500 total voters is far from the majority.

  • 5 anonymous // Nov 6, 2007 at 10:29 pm

Maybe the repubs will get some council members so this city can move forward

  • 6 Anonymous // Nov 6, 2007 at 11:32 pm

As the polls show their final numbers maybe they wont. Moccia thought he could carry the rebubs to victory but he could not. Its sad for Norwalk this is the best we can do however the fact is this is the best we can do. Moccia won Norwalk lost.

In a city of over 80,000 residents less than 13,000 or so went out to vote. How sad is that.

Those people who didn’t vote, can’t crab about the outcome.

  • 8 Mr Greenpeace // Nov 7, 2007 at 12:03 am

maybe some of the residents simply thought
Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t know.

This is the modern wording of an old Irish proverb from the 1500s. The thought has remained the same, though the original wording back then was fairly archaic, but in modern times it is often shortened to just the first part of the phrase, as in “Better the devil you know…” Or “I’ll stick with the devil I know…”

    You could be right.

  • 10 Anonymous // Nov 7, 2007 at 12:30 am

I don’t know if these numbers are actually true. It seems that there were problems at Rowayton, Fox Run, Columbus, and Nathaniel Ely. The reporting of them on this blog makes me wonder if all of the votes were counted, ot if there was some kind of funny business going on. It just gets worse and worse, if that has happened.

  • 11 Anonymous // Nov 7, 2007 at 12:57 am

Can someone explain how the count on the machine works?

When I put my vote sheet in the machine. I didn’t notice what the number was until it had began to grab the sheet, so when I was looking it had grabbed a few inches of the sheet. The number didn’t change, however I suspect the number must change as soon as it grabs the sheet.

I mentioned this to the guy next to me and he gave me what my number was suppose to be which he was correct without looking at it…I suppose he looked at it before I put the sheet in.

I think what happened is people focus on where to put the sheet and the machine quickly grabs it and by the time you look at the screen the number has already been changes. I think most people are use to a copy machine that might change the number after the sheet has been completely feed through the machine. I voted at Marys.

Does anybody know when the machine is suppose to change the number?

The people have spoken, and based on the number of voters the message was loud and clear….WE DON’T CARE.

Although the Advocate called this a “mandate” it is far from that. It is simply a pitiful demonstration of how little we view our freedom.

I figure most of the people reading this blog voted, and to the winners, congrats. But I hope nobody gets a big head about their “victory”. Registered voters account for about half of Norwalk’s population, and barely a quarter of those were inspired enough to actually get off their asses and vote.

    Pathetic.

  • 13 anonymous // Nov 7, 2007 at 9:18 pm

Statistically speaking, since at least 10 percent of eligible voters voted, it would be representative of the entire voting population and the results would have been the same if more people had voted. Only in really tight races could it have made a difference. Those voters who did not vote would have slightly contributed to the incumbents tally. Most of those who did not vote feel unaffected or satisfied with the way things are, making them slightly more likely to vote for incumbents. Those who vote feel a vested interest. Those who are unsatisfied with the status quo are more likely to have voted, as are those that are extremely satisfied with the way things are.

There are more Democrats than Republicans registered to vote in Norwalk. The Briggs campaign did nothing to pull voters out, and if it weren’t for individual council campaigns, the Democrats would have lost. It seems Democrats in Norwalk are indifferent to the candidates hand picked to run, maybe they should try something different for a change.

  • 15 Kevin , should knock it off! // Nov 8, 2007 at 8:12 am

Kevin P. is a sore loser and attacking Herb Grant will not win him support in district C. The people in that district said no thanks twice.

  • 16 anonymous // Nov 8, 2007 at 8:17 am

what poruban said is a racist remark. the term “peeps” is meant to be racially derogatory. Real nice coming from a pea brained demo loser. He is the vice chair of the dem party and utters this racist drivel. he should resign that post. only in norwalk

  • 17 anon again // Nov 8, 2007 at 8:21 am

Actually, it seems as if the Republican council candidates were the weak links on the ticket since the votes for mayor could not even bring along the council at large. Seems to me the Repiblicans need to take a long, hard look at their slate. The Dems did really well except for the top of the ticket.

And “peeps” is racial? I thought it was those sugary little chicks that no one eats at Easter?

  • 18 Kevin go home // Nov 8, 2007 at 8:29 am

Kevin is a pea brain. He should go climb his poles and leave politics to those who actually possess a brain.

  • 19 anonymous // Nov 8, 2007 at 8:33 am

Kevin’s Lawn Signs should of read:

    Un-Elect
    KEVIN POURUBAN
    ….Again!

  • 20 Kevin , should knock it off! // Nov 8, 2007 at 8:39 am

Kevin P. “peeps” comment was racist and I am ashamed of him.

  • 21 anon again // Nov 8, 2007 at 8:48 am

I’ve never heard “peeps” as racist — or anything derogatory. Y’all are so much more worldly. Please enlighten me.

  • 22 Democrat // Nov 8, 2007 at 9:01 am

For those of you who read remarks about the multitude of Dems who were courteous enough to visit the Repubs and extend congratulations, Michael Geake’s remarks where those of a scholar and and a gentleman. He will be a real asset to the Common Council. Wells and Poruban need to start packing and leave the Democrats to clean up their mess. Bye-bye!

  • 23 dem in the know // Nov 8, 2007 at 9:14 am

If you know anything about politics you would know that the comments by Poruban and Wells is just one more way that they are systematically destroying the local party. Herb Grant did the right thing, he worked closely with his fellow council people for the beterment of the city and therefore felt he should wish everyone well. Kudo’s to those candidates that extended their best wishes to both sides. It shows that they have a sense of right and wrong and they are aware that no matter what happens, at the end of the day they are elected by the people and are expected to work alongside each other in a way that will benefit everyone. I would imagine by the loss that the voters were looking for people who would represent them and not Galen Wells and friends. The democratic party in Norwalk needs to look long and hard at who is representing them and make some drastic changes or there will be no representation next time.

  • 24 Anonymous // Nov 8, 2007 at 9:26 am

Geake, Lindstrom and Serasis represent the future of the Democratic party in this town. I wish them well as new Council members.

  • 25 anon again // Nov 8, 2007 at 9:28 am

What are YOU smoking? The Dems added new faces and greater diversity to the Council. Good for them! All the Republicans could do is recycle the same old political hacks — and then just barely in most districts. Strange how the top of the ticket (Moccia) left the rest of the ticket swinging in the wind. think the R’s need to do some serious looking inward before casting stones at otehrs. You know the old proverb…the log in your eye and all.

  • 26 turfgrrl // Nov 8, 2007 at 9:28 am

peeps are racist? Oh my. I knew there’d be trouble once they started with the pink, then purple, then white colored peeps. And when the started making peeps outside of Easter … well that just really stirred things up.
  • 27 anon again // Nov 8, 2007 at 9:32 am

I’ve heard that there’s been a rash of leaving marshmallows around as veiled threats.

  • 28 turfgrrl // Nov 8, 2007 at 9:35 am

Next thing you know, they’ll have CSI dusting for sugar prints.
  • 29 anon again // Nov 8, 2007 at 9:39 am

The threat level was ratcheted up recently when someone found Hershey bars and graham crackers left alongside the marshmallows.

  • 30 turfgrrl // Nov 8, 2007 at 10:26 am

s’mores instead of snores … that makes for an interesting case.
