Norwalk: 1395 Turkeys Missing

If we could all tear ourselves away from the election campaigns for a minute, the Advocate ran a story today about the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County having only 5 Turkeys in its freezer.

By Friday afternoon, Lombardo, the executive director of the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County, had five turkeys to distribute to needy families for Thanksgiving. Her agency’s goal is to distribute 3,000.The food bank had about 1,400 turkeys at this time last year, Lombardo said, but past donors have not been as generous in 2007 because of a slumping economy.

“Oil is up,” Lombardo said. “That means heating is up. That means gas is going to be back up. All of these things . . . impact a donor’s ability to reach deep.”

They also affect those who receive meals from soup kitchens and other food distribution programs. In October, The Associated Press reported that food banks nationwide face severe shortages as a result of a reeling Wall Street and increased living costs.

“I can see the domino effect occurring,” Lombardo said. “And we’re feeling it here. Food banks across the nation are feeling this issue.”

The food bank distributes donated food to pantries, soup kitchens and shelters in Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, Norwalk, Stamford and Wilton. Last Thanksgiving, the food bank collected 2,800 turkeys for families in need.

Please open your hearts, and help us ensure our neighbors enjoy this traditional American holiday.

If you are voting some turkeys out of office, then please go and buy a new real turkey and bring to Food Bank.

this a quality of life issue, give this to Dick let his supporters help, instead of having many vendors at the farmers market we now have one giving to the local churches and ect.

Its odd how it wasn’t a problem to restrict vendors from using a parking lot close to the ones who need it.

yes lets forget the elections just focus on what politicians made life miserable for the food banks back a month or so ago .

I only can recall one name fighting for the people who is running , It was Geake correct me if I’m wrong.

    where was everyone else?

Nice thread too bad we didn’t see more support or drop off areas in our city to bring things too.Does most know where the homeless shelter is in Norwalk?

GE and Pepperidge Farms do, without them things at the shelter would be worse.

I have forwarded an email to everyone in my address book letting them know of this need & giving them the link for the Food Bank website. Hopefully each person will not only take the time to donate a turkey or other items, but will also forward the email to everyone in their address list as well.

I encourage all of you to do the same. It is hard to keep up with issues like these especially during election time when news stories are mostly political. Hopefully we can help the food bank meet its goal before the holiday, but please don’t forget that it is during other times of the year (non-holidays) when the food bank suffers as well, when people tend to forget others in need!

[…] This is despite the bumper crops in Vietnam and India.  Food riots gripped Haitia and Egypt in April, prompting news reports of dire predictions of food shortages in the US. Which wouldn’t be surprising considering how difficult it was for non profits to gather food donations in the area this past year. […]
