Norwalk: Crime Stats Say We Are Doing Better

by turfgrrl

November 3rd, 2007 · 167 Comments

Both the Hour and Advocate report that serious crimes went down but …

The most serious crimes in the city declined 11 percent during the first six months of the year compared to the same period in 2006, Police Chief Harry Rilling said yesterday.

During the first six months of this year, there were 94 fewer Group A crimes than last year, which include assault, homicide, burglary, robbery and sex assaults, a decline from 843 to 749.

But not all crime categories declined. Kidnapping - including the domestic violence charge of unlawful restraint - rose from nine incidents in 2006 to 15 this year.

Sexual assaults, which also increased from 2005 to 2006, rose from 20 incidents to 29 for the first six months of this year.

So the top line less shooting more kidnapping and sexual assaults. And then there are the robberies which are quite the national epidemic. Banks deserve the lion’s share of blame in the boom of retail locations making it so much easier for robbers to go to “where the money is.”

Wow, what a coincidence that the Police Dept. would be releasing information favorable to the Mayor’s campaign just days before the election!

  • 2 Anonymous // Nov 3, 2007 at 9:46 am

It’s only favorable if you think the Mayor has much influence on crime. The Mayor has influence over how many officers we have on patrol, and that doesn’t look so good Dick, now doesn’t it?

  • 3 anonymous // Nov 3, 2007 at 9:48 am

Does anyone know what happened to the hiring of the two new deputy chiefs ? It seems to have been announced, but never happened. Does anyone know the story behind this ?

  • 4 Mr Greenpeace // Nov 3, 2007 at 11:29 am

what about the guns that are being used and taken from the streets , was there an increase?

Six officers to take down one suspect , how many were on the other night at 9 pm.

Vicious attacks on homeless, and illegals have been the news for the past couple of months.

take nothing away from the police officers but how many were injured this year involving arrests, how many are out on sick leave?

Any article can make the mayor shine ,but what about the how many people are being arrested out of the homeless shelters the average age does not coincide with the numbers given by the Hour .

Bear in mind John Nickersons police reports and police blotter always refelects patterns in arrests and where most of the crime is taking place along with age.

Not once does the article mention bank robberies and armed holdups and weapon of choice.

Figure your going to read it and say Mr Greenpeace will find something wrong with this, can’t do much until all the facts are in or the ballots are counted.

The question should be , do the residents feel the streets are safer now than before?

Matt Breslow from the Advocate did a drug arrest rundown a while back, I’d like to see one now, because we don’t talk about drug arrests doesn’t mean drugs are not here.Lets be serious.

not my personal view but one that should be read is

    Tuesday, March 20, 2007
Illegal Alien Crime Wave Goes Unreported
Were you aware that we house tens of thousands of illegal alien criminals in our prisons and jails at taxpayer expense? Did you know that illegal aliens frequently kidnap and imprison other illegal aliens pending payment of ransom money from their relatives? Were you aware that there are hundreds of illegal alien brothels and thousands of sex slaves in this the land of the free and the home of the brave? Have you read and heard about the drug house busts in Cape Coral, a crime heretofore unheard of? Did you notice that the surname of virtually everyone apprehended was Hispanic? Do you wonder why the citizenship status of these drug pushing scumbags was not even mentioned or investigated by the press? Were you aware that tens of thousands of American citizens are robbed, murdered, and raped every year by illegal alien hoodlums? Did you know that ultra violent illegal alien gangs like MS-13 have literally taken over large swaths of our American cities? For the protection of yourself and your family

of course a informed police chief would talk about the above, nothing is Rillings fault, but I’d like to know our chief is well versed.

Good crime data can provide a summary of what crimes are occurring, where they are happening and when they are happening, “When this information is available, school officials can develop more effective prevention and remediation programs and provide responsible adult supervision to those areas where the difficulties are occurring. what was the numbers in the schools, one article i just read put a teacher in the hospital over a in school fight at the High school.

so lets not be jaded by the timing , or the great headlines lets give the credit to the police officers and lets hear from them not the chief or the mayor at election time.We won’t hear anything else for another 730 days, no way to run a city is it?

What about the guns related to the crimes that are committed in Norwalk? waht about the assualts that have turned vicious on store owners and residents?

three men is a great start ,but what are the future plans, now that would be election material.

  • 5 Anon // Nov 3, 2007 at 12:37 pm

Mr. Greenpeace, while we all understand that there are crimes that go unnoticed we must keep in mind that this is not just a Norwalk epidemic, crime is everywhere. Bank robberies are rampant across the country, espectially in Fairfield County straight up the Post Road. Guns unfortunately are being bought and sold illegally and getting into the hands of our youth across the country, I’m not sure what can be done about this. Gangs are something that Norwalk ignored for several years because we didn’t want to taint our image. Now that was a bunch of BS since sweeping the real truth under the rug cause more harm and a greater influx. Thankfully we are calling them what they are and educating people on how they work and how to detect if our kids are involved. They are not cliques folks! Just because they aren’t big name gang labels doesn’t mean a thing, they are pockets of the more prominent gangs. Yes, we need more police on the streets and yes, we need more funding, but to sit back and say its this mayors fault is ludicrous, these are things that that have developed over years of turning a blind eye. Perhaps the leadership at the police department has to get a little more forceful in his quest for more officers and funding, there is no simple answer to crime.

  • 6 Mr Greenpeace // Nov 3, 2007 at 3:02 pm

Stamford rate dropped 22 percent, they hired more officres and received grant money for their housing complexes where by the way Norwalk has always seem to have problems.

I do agree with you #5 your right on all counts I only wish the header read this morning on the blog

Crime stats say we are doing better

    but

    Police investigate two severe beatings

    - City police reported that two men were severely beaten in separate incidents.

The first assault occurred before 9 p.m. Thursday on Soundview Avenue. A city man told police three or four men exited a tan car and jumped him, Sgt. Andre Velez said.
The victim said after one of the men punched him in the face and knocked him to the ground, another man hit him in the head with a silver gun. A third man beat him with a baseball bat.

After the men left in the car, the victim found a cell phone that was apparently left behind by one of his attackers, Velez said.

Shortly after 9 p.m., the man was walking by Observatory Place when the car reappeared and struck the man, the victim told police. He said the driver then backed over his legs before the men got out of the car and beat him again, demanding the cell phone, Velez said.

When the victim threw the cell phone at them, a resident appeared and the men got into the car and drove away, he told police.

The resident took the victim to Norwalk Hospital, Velez said. He was treated for cuts and bruises to his head, hands and arms, police said. A hospital supervisor said the victim had been released.

Police spoke to one witness who said he was following a Honda when the car stopped in the middle of the road at the corner of Glasser Street and Observatory Place and three or four men jumped out and chased another man up Observatory Place.

One of the men appeared to be carrying a silver gun, the witness said.

Police talked to two more witnesses who said they saw two men beating up one man on Observatory Place.

The police officer reported that there were many inconstancies in the victim’s and witnesses’ stories, Velez said.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the case.

In the second incident, a New Haven man was arrested in the beating of another man outside a Wall Street bar early Friday morning, police said.

Pablo Calva, 21, of 44 Admiral St., New Haven, was charged with first-degree assault and held on $20,000 bond.

The incident occurred at about 1:15 a.m. when an officer parked across from El Mexicano, at 22 Wall St., saw six or seven men run from the establishment to the side parking lot.

One of the men fell and was surrounded by the others, who began punching and kicking him, Velez said.

The officer saw Calva pick up a baseball bat or a large stick and beat the man.

The officer pulled into the parking lot and blocked Calva’s car from leaving, Velez said.

The victim sustained a large bruise and cut on his forehead and lost at least one tooth in the fight. The victim’s mouth was injured so badly that he was unable to talk to police after the incident.

This is what I had said earlier John Nickerson from the Advocate goes the extra mile and reports these crimes, I can understand the cirme stats, I’ll take a stolen bike report over vicious beatings as I said this morning and time and time again.

I just think fair play on the news is whats needed and letting the public decide if the streets are safe not the mayor.

Its shame the Advocate always seems to get the short end of the stick sometimes but they do time and time again report the other side of the news as well. what goes around comes around I say.

This is not saying we have to make the mayor and the chief look bad it simply states crime is not getting better or worse its getting vicious with guns.

Where is the mayor on guns he does belong to mayors against guns, lets see responsive leadership lets hear about guns and the incentives other mayors are using in their cities,

tout it use it or forget it I say.

  • 7 Wake Up Already! // Nov 3, 2007 at 4:33 pm

Mr. Greenpeace, What is your stand on guns? Are you an anti-gun lobbist? Do you think citizens after a police check are ok to have them? Do you want a total ban on guns?

  • 8 anonymous // Nov 3, 2007 at 4:55 pm

Greenpeace - I actually agree with you on this one. The Advocate reported the two severe beatings while The Hour didn’t want to sully their big campaign plug for Moccia headline with the minor details about the beatings!

Yup, the Republicans have this election in the bag - they shouldn’t even bother to go out to the polls on Tuesday.

  • 10 Mr Greenpeace // Nov 3, 2007 at 8:07 pm

firepower on the street as its seen all over the country is a problem. I’m not for having kids with guns and street justice fans for having them as well.

I’m not anti gun and do not want a total ban on guns but would like to see some dialougue.

Six officers to take down one suspect , how many were on the other night at 9 pm.This was at gunpoint here in Norwalk the other night.

I’m for one who if belongs to a organization to curb and stop gun voilence use their clout to do something positive , not only when a killing gets headlines but when guns make the same headlines.

The city like others are full of guns, full of near miss incidents. They also have mayors who constantly come out and stand beside thier men on the streets not from a distance until someone gets hurt.

    http://www.mayorsagainstillegalguns.org/html/home/home.shtml

I’m sure there is enough on the above site to suggest there are other cities with the problem but here you can read what alternatives are available if you read into it, I won’t and then display I’ll lead to the water.

We had mailboxes when I was a kid to drop off guns, it wasn’t until sporting event tickets were offered did they get some guns off the street. They also had free turn in days at the police station without any questions asked.

When was our last turn in day here in Norwalk?

  • 11 Wake Up Already! // Nov 3, 2007 at 9:27 pm

GP You know the old saying “if guns were illegal then only outlaws would have them”
A lot of truth to that. Imagine there was a law passed tomorrow theat ALL guns were illegal…do you think that the thug would say “I was planning of robbing or killing someone, but hey, guns are illegal, so let me turn it in.” Of course Not! How ridiculous does that staement sound?
The Truth of the matter is that a same percentage of career criminals are responsible for the 90 plus Percent of the crime out there and if you keep granting them parole or stupid things & reasons liberals release thugs back into society for, such as the prisons are too full and we can’t crowd them, yada yada etc.
HELLLLOO!! IT’S PRISON DOPEY!! IT’S NOT THE RITZ CARLTON! Here’s something for you to check out, the next tine one of these people who commit these crimes you are so concerned about gets caught, LOOK AT HIS RAP SHEET! I guarentee you this thug has be in and out of jail several times. We have revoling door justice in this country - get caught reduce your crime through a plea deal and get back out into the streets in no time. When will these dopey, moronic ACLU card carring dimwits get it? Seems the thugs have more rights than the victims. Just look at those two monsters in Cheshire who killed that doctors family recently. They were just released and for no other reason then just picking them out at the local super market, these two animals followed them home, broke in their house, then raped & killed the women, beat the hell out of the father and tried to set the house on fire. Did you see the sorid past of these two monsters? Did you see how many times they had been in prison? But our wonderful Judicial system, That to these bleeding heart, piece of $h!t liberals in this country let them back out again! Don’t blame the guns, it’s this countries stupidity for let animal such as these go back into society.

  • 12 Mr Greenpeace // Nov 3, 2007 at 9:57 pm

I agree with every word you say Wake Up Already,

The trouble I see is when Stamford and Bridgeport and Hartford all take steps to elimanate or deter we as the sixth largest city will bear some responsibility to our residents to continue the fight like all other cities. Its a problem when we don’t have two man cruiser teams responding to incidents of reported guns. The fire dept and the ems have backed down in some instances until they know the gunfire has stopped or been elimanated accross the country including Norwalk.

What number i did want to see is how many crimes with guns and how many people have been shot this year. The Advocate has reported many, no they were not killed but this is like horseshoes they count if it comes close.

Its a shame we talk only two killed only one killed what about the kids in wheelchairs who didn’t die but still are serving a life sentences.

  • 13 Its a shame // Nov 3, 2007 at 10:39 pm

Most of the child rapes and murders in this country are committed by convicted felons who are let out of jail for “good behavior” or some other lame excuse and then they start their reign of terror all over again. Unfortunately its little children who become their victims.
9-year-old Jessica Lunsford is kidnapped in her bedroom by John Couey, a repeat sex offender, Hence, Jessica’s Law.

8-year old Christin Lamb who was abducted, sexually assaulted and murdered on July 19, 1998 in Powell, Wyoming. Hence , The Christan Lamb Foundation

Megan’s Law is named after seven-year-old Megan Kanka, a New Jersey girl who was raped and killed by a known child molester who had moved across the street from the family without their knowledge. Hence, Megan’s Law.

Our Judicial system is too lenient on these people because we have too many people who believe these perps can be cured. I’ll bet they thought the same about these three men.

We have children running around our streets carrying guns, where do they get them and where are their parents?

Until our society takes a good hard look at the crimes and those committing them we will always have numbers. Remember though, those numbers have a face.

  • 14 Al Bore // Nov 4, 2007 at 10:14 am

This should help Rillings bid for mayor in 09. The stats are nothing more than a political move and mean nothing. No thanks to the Mayor for sure. Lets not hang our hats and be proud of these numbers please. We need good leadership in city hall and our police department or Norwalk will nose dive. Lots more work to be done boys.

  • 15 Anonymous // Nov 4, 2007 at 10:19 am

Thats because they are too busy robbing banks no time for those other crimes. You can get caught stealing cars seem like its much easier to rob a bank since we have had such a increase in bank hold-ups. Put armed guards in banks and more foot patrols. Doi something other than over build this city.

  • 16 non partisan view // Nov 4, 2007 at 10:38 am

Harry Rilling has been the chief for how long? How can you blame this mayor for his faults? Did we all of sudden discover crime in Norwalk over the past two years? Look at the state prior to this administration under Rillings reign, come on Should we blame prior admnistrations as well or should we lay the blame where it belongs? Lack of parental guidance, no place for these kids to go, lack of police officers on the streets because of a drop plans that that systematically reduced the numbers of those who would hav otherwise remained? Come on, what else can you blame this administration for, hey call up Al Gore, I think he’s looking for someone to blame global warming on. When are we going to look at things honestly and sensibly?

  • 17 Anonymous // Nov 4, 2007 at 1:29 pm

Armed suspect wearing a gold sweatsuit is what they are looking for now in South Norwalk, suppose we ought to help out our police dept the mayor won’t. 12:10 sunday is when this is occuring.

    who got held up?

lets start at the top here in Norwalk first, blame the here and now non partisan veiw.

NORWALK — An armed robber struck an employee at Veronica’s Hair Salon over the head Tuesday night and made off with an undetermined amount of cash, police said.

    another day another gun

Shortly before 8 p.m., police received a call about a robbery that just took place at the 82 Fort Point St. salon, said Lt. Paul Resnick, a spokesman for the Norwalk Police Department.

Upon arrival, officers found one of the salon’s male employees bleeding from a head laceration, he said.

NORWALK — Details are sketchy, but police responded to a shooting Friday evening at approximately 8 p.m. near the Washington Village public housing complex.
The shooting allegedly took place on the corner of South Main and Concord streets.

The unidentified victim was transported to Norwalk Hospital. It was unclear late Friday whether the victim was male or female and the condition of the victim or the extent of injuries was also unknown.

According to police traffic, authorities were searching for a black male in his 20s wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt who was last seen on a bicycle heading in the direction of King Kennedy public housing complex.

NORWALK — A man from Bridgeport
was shot multiple times Saturday in the
area of Water Street and Elizabeth Street,
    police reported.
No suspects were found, and the number
of people involved in the shooting is
    unknown.
At 1:46 a.m., Officer William Curwen
was working an extra-duty job at the Monterey
    Village housing complex when he
heard gunshots coming from the Washington
    Village housing complex. Several
    Washington Village residents also heard
    the shots and called 911.
The victim, Steven Williams, 37, waved
down an officer near Water Street and
Elizabeth Street. Police patrol units found
two vehicles with bullet holes at the corner
of Raymond Street and Day Street.
    Williams had received several gunshot
wounds to the upper torso and neck. Norwalk
    paramedics transported him to Norwalk
Hospital, where he was listed in critical
    but stable condition Sunday morning.
He was discharged later in the day, according
    to the hospital.
Patrol units continued to search the
area and found shell casings on Day Street
and casings from a different caliber
    weapon on Raymond Street, indicating
more than one shooter was involved

here is a surprise more than on gun

  • 21 Anonymous // Nov 14, 2007 at 2:05 pm

    Saturday morning.”
    The stabbing shocked residents
    of the Silvermine area,
    which is generally a fairly
    peaceful part of the city.
    One 19-year-old from Stamford
    allegedly stabbed a 19-
    year-old from Norwalk at about
    2:30 a.m. Oct. 27 after a verbal
    argument led to a physical
    fight between the two, who
were hanging out at the park
    with other teens, police said.
    The victim, whose intestines
    spilled out of his body
    after the stabbing, had five
    external and internal wounds
fixed in surgery and was discharged
    Wedneday from Norwalk
    Hospital.
    In August, Patchen Street
    resident Bridget Randolph sent
a letter of concern to Mayor
    Richard Moccia and Police
    Chief Harry Rilling, along
    with 25 photos of disturbing
sights — such as used condoms
and empty drug bags — that
she came across in “just one
walk over there on a Saturday.
    “That was in August, and
    then last weekend a 19-year-old
    gets stabbed,” Randolph said.
    “Does it take someone getting
killed to get a light in the parking lot.

“It’s strictly a lack of police
presence or lack of lighting in
    that parking lot,” Allen said
    early last week. “There has
been an uptick in police presence
    there … somewhat, but
not enough to make any difference.
It just seems that all the
attention is paid to South Norwalk,
    and that problem should
have been taken care of a long
    time ago. They (police) just
don’t seem to have the gumption
    to apply the pressure that
    needs to be applied.”
    Rilling said anyone who
    isn’t satisfied with police
    response should call his office
    as soon as possible afterward
to alert him to the problem. He
said Allen hadn’t called him to
    make such complaints.

    Mayor Moccia said lighting
was the topic of conversation a
year ago but the light pole in
the lot turned out to belong to
    Connecticut Light & Power,
and so the city never got it
    hooked

whats this all mean to a Norwalker?

I can see this thread is only going to get longer resolve on each case or not. Trouble seems to be brewing on the streets , like it was said before seems like the shootings, death or not usually happen around oct-nov. maybe it would be a good idea to give the stats and the numbers at the end of each quarter and not make it a political football as it was the report seem inacurate to say the least.I trust someone has told the mayor the city is experiencing crime with handguns city wide and sharp knives can deliver the same kind of death.

  • 24 Anon // Nov 14, 2007 at 8:28 pm

It’s time that people who try to outrun police cars, fire trucks and EMS are made to pay. I saw a car 2 weeks ago that was behind me, a fire truck was coming towartds us with flashing lights horns, the whole works,I quickly pulled up on the right curb becasuse it was a narrow street and the car behind me literly jumped out behind me was almost on my side window and then headed directly in the path of the oncoming truck so that the fire truck had to pull over slightly to avoid a headon collision. Thankfully the light ahead of the guy turned red and he had to stop. I immediately jotted down the license plate and e-mailed it to the fire dept as soon as I got home. People need to start noticing these things and turn the offenders over to the authorities. These emergency vehicles could be on their way to save you or a loved one
