Norwalk: It’s Mayoral High School Musical

It’s taken until the last week of the campaign for the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune to emerge. Who knew that it was going to take on the form of a High School rivalry, mascots included.

“I believe our state senator referred to me as being ’sheepish.’ The last thing in the world anybody could ever say about me is that I’m sheepish,” Moccia said. “On Tuesday, the people of this city will re-elect this Republican administration and they’ll see that we’re actually lions, we’re not sheep.”Seconds later, Moccia kicked off the karoake event by singing “Delilah” by Tom Jones.

Moccia’s rebuttal — and call for Republicans to go to the polls next Tuesday — came during a dinner-and-karaoke fundraiser that brought upward of 100 people to the Continental Manor on Main Street. Those attending were asked to donate $50 to Moccia’s campaign.

Would that be Lion In Winter or more of panthera leo? This year, the perennial NFL weakling Detroit Lions are actually doing quite well, but doesn’t Walter Briggs hail from Michigan and that other sport, baseball’s Detroit Tigers?

So it’s Lions, and Tigers and (marching) Bears, oh my … election 2007.

    With apologies to Tom Jones:

    “Deny Ya”

I saw da light on da night that I passed by dere Chamber
I saw da flickering shadow a love and da pain dere
    Dey all said “No, man!”
As dey deceived me I watched and went out of my mind

My my my gotta deny ya
Why why why I gotta deny ya
I could see, dem people was no good for me
But I was lost like a slave that no Council minority could free

At break of day when dat Council went away I was waiting
I crossed the street to my house and I opened da door
    We stood there laughing
I felt the knife in my hand and dey laughed no more

My my my gotta deny ya
Why why why I gotta deny ya
So before dey come to break down the door
Forgive me No-walk I just couldn’t pocket any more
Forgive me No-walk I just couldn’t pocket any more

While I don’t agree with you #4 I apprecicate your sarcasm and humor. Good Job. You just may of inspired me to write a song of my own.

Good strategy by the mayor and The Hour to change the subject from the demo delay ordinance veto to how “macho” the mayor is - nice picture of the mayor in The Hour as well.

  • 7 veto moccia // Nov 2, 2007 at 9:10 am

    Veto mayor mocciachino.

  • 8 Wake up already! // Nov 2, 2007 at 9:16 am

So what’s the big deal? Many still don’t agree on the ordinance, so we’ll have a debate about it, find common ground and pass an oridinance we can all live with. I think the “50 year” should be raised to 75 years at minimum, preferably 100 years.

  • 9 veto moccia // Nov 2, 2007 at 9:24 am

Veto Mayor Moccia ! It’s time for a change.

  • 10 Anonymous // Nov 2, 2007 at 10:18 am

Cowardly Lion indeed. The macho suit is threadbare. Time to go back into the attic.

There are buildings 75 and 100 years old that are not worth saving. Age ain’t nothing but a number. It’s a guideline — a point at which people can engage their INTELLIGENCE and say…”Hmmmm, is this building important to Norwalk’s historic character in some way and might it be worth talking to the owner about ways to save it?” If not, tear it down and build something better. If so, have a public hearing. If the public says, “Yuck, it’s ugly and has no value”, the owner smiles, says thank you, and tears it down. If the public says “Omigod, this is SO important and we have to figure out a way to keep it,” all interested parties have 180 days to find options that are acceptable to the owner — including finding a buyer (at the owners price) who will not demolish. If — at the end of the dsicussons — none of those ideas make sense to the owner, the owner tears it down.

I guess my question is why would the City want to make it even easier for developers to tear down and build? How about doing something that gives the citizens SOME voice in the process? Why would the Mayor veto something that gives citizens a chance to have a say in what the City they live in looks like in the future?

Mayor Moccia has got to go !

  • 13 demsknow // Nov 2, 2007 at 10:31 am

Indiga-have you not been listening? He didn’t veto it for the reasons you state. He veto’d it so it can go back to committee and be properly written so there is no room for mistakes later on . Why must you continue to put the wrong spin on a very simple solution. Let the law dept go over it and let it be signed by the council and put into place so the history of Norwalk can be preserved and at the same time protect property owners from uneducated guesses. I think a board should be put in place to review all delays and investigate the background of the homes/buildings before things are done in haste and cause undue delays that have no significance to Norwalk’s history.

Mayor Moccia must go ! Time to veto Mayor Mooch !

  • 15 anonymous // Nov 2, 2007 at 10:36 am

Moccia should reconsider his stupid veto and sign the damn bill. This is revealing how lame Mayor Moccia is.

  • 16 Anonymous // Nov 2, 2007 at 10:36 am

This is such a transparent attempt by Republicans to hand over Wall Street so that it can be torn down and replaced by strip malls and condo buildings. Do we want that? No Way! Veto Moccia!

  • 17 Lionslayer // Nov 2, 2007 at 10:40 am

Moccia is a republican, he vetoed a bill what Governor Rell signed. He knows better than our great governor. I know republican who won’t vote for dick, the cowardly lion.

  • 18 Liontamer // Nov 2, 2007 at 10:43 am

If moccia really wanted it to pass, why didn’t his consigliere put out his own version of the ordinance ?? Something fishy here in vetoland.

  • 19 Wake Up Already! // Nov 2, 2007 at 10:47 am

#17 you and your fellow “veto Moccia” (WE all know your the same person signing differently) should pinch yourself, so maybe you’ll wake up. Keep dreaming because on this Tuesday evening you will find Moccia re-elected with a super council majority, Reality is going to be a bitch for you I can tell. you should really……….

  • 20 Lionkeeper // Nov 2, 2007 at 10:47 am

If people will think dick is a lion, his veto really lacked roar and was reminiscnet of a toothless lion being sent into the cage. Time for a change. Veto the toothless lion on tuesday.

  • 21 anonymous // Nov 2, 2007 at 10:50 am

#19 alot of people disagree with you neocon drivel. Go take another hallucinegen. The residents of the city will overwhelmingly veto moccia on tuesday.

  • 22 Wake Up Already! // Nov 2, 2007 at 10:53 am

If Moccia is a toothless lion than Briggs would have to be a boneless chicken!

  • 23 dem4life // Nov 2, 2007 at 10:53 am

How typical of Republicans to roar in fake outrage. Republicans in Connecticut keep robbing the tax payers so that their contracting buddies can make money. That is what this is about, some contractor won’t make money. Norwalk is for sale and the Republicans are selling us all out. Veto Moccia!

  • 24 anonymous // Nov 2, 2007 at 10:54 am

Republican Super Majority on the council? Great - that’ll be as effective as the Bush Administration has been! Huge Deficits, blood on their hands, trampling of the constitution! Why have a demo delay at all. Just tear down all that old stuff and build condos on the Green - it will be great!

  • 25 Wake Up Already! // Nov 2, 2007 at 10:59 am

TO all you nice people out there that feel I have been “out of line” in the past to people like #21, take a good look at #21. You are the one who will need a whole lot more than hallucinegens on Tuesday eveing to help you deal with reality. Wow, Turfgrrl! I didn’t even let this Phool get to me at all! I

  • 26 anonymous // Nov 2, 2007 at 10:59 am

#24 IS RIGHT! A republican council will ruin our constitution, and will send Norwalk residents to war!

You do know that some republicans running dont stand 100% behind the Mayor all the time. Some are running to represent there districts, and sometimes that means standing up against the Mayor.
