Norwalk: Sunday Council Candidate Debate Details

by turfgrrl

October 26th, 2007 · 21 Comments

As promised, here are the details. We have unleashed the questions on all candidates via email. If you’re a candidate and you did not get the email (bad, bad Internet) then let us know. Candidates who are unable to attend will be asked to submit their responses in writing for posting here. None of their answers will be posted until after Sunday Night. Candidates who did attend, but who also wish to submit written respones can do that too. They will have till Sunday night to submit them.

Meanwhile, this is what we sent out:

Sunday’s debate should be fun and informative. The format will be as follows:
Below you will find 6 questions. Depending on time, you will be asked 5 of them on Sunday.
When you arrive, you will draw a random number to determine where you will sit. (There will be 3 tables in the front of the room and each table will have 5 candidates).

There are no microphones. When answering your question, you may stand if you wish.

The moderator will introduce you by your name and the office you seek.
There will be no opening statements. (In other words, this will be very similar to how the actual council runs).
Random numbers will be drawn to determine the speaking order on each question.
The questions will be asked from panelists comprised of representatives of the sponsoring organizations.
Everyone will have an opportunity to answer the question. Following that round, anyone wishing to rebut what has been said will be given that opportunity.
We ask that you limit your answers to 1 minute and your rebuttal to 30 seconds. A timekeeper will keep track of this.
This format will continue for all questions.
This will conclude the debate.
The audience will be told that they can ask questions informally of anyone who is able to stay for a few minutes after the conclusion.
You may submit your answers in writing by 6pm on Sunday whether you participate in the event or not.
Answers to questions will appear on www.yourct.com

And now - the questions:

This year’s flooding problems showed that infrastructure should be more of a priority in Norwalk’s spending. Where do you think we should be spending our money?
We have several different redevelopment projects planned for the urban corridor. What will you do to ensure that the developers work together so the end result will benefit the city?
The past budget cycle was contentious about funding for education. Do you philosophically support funding Norwalk’s education more or less - and why?
What will you do to address quality of life issues such as crime, traffic, housing, etc.?
If elected, what would you do to reach out to the community?
The year is 2030 and aliens from outer space have just landed in Norwalk. How would they describe what they see?

We reserve the right to ask more or less than 5 questions depending on time. We also may ask these in a different order on Sunday.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know. We are doing this debate/panel for you.

Maribeth Becker (CNNA), Jackie Lightfield (yourCT.com),

Any comments by members of our studio audience are appreciated in the usual place.

UPDATE: The League of Women Voters has been withdrawn from this event.

This looks interesting. Will the audience get to ask questions?

  • 2 MGeake // Oct 26, 2007 at 1:13 pm

I think the questions you sent are great, but all of them merit far more than one minute to answer!

  • 3 Democrat // Oct 26, 2007 at 3:12 pm

You can do it Mike, just get prepared now that you know the questions :)

  • 4 Anonymous // Oct 26, 2007 at 3:21 pm

Mike, you lose the audience if you talk to long. straight and simple answers is all it takes.

  • 5 Mike Lyons // Oct 26, 2007 at 5:18 pm

Did the LWV withdraw because the questions actually deal with substance? :-)

  • 6 turfgrrl // Oct 26, 2007 at 6:20 pm

taxpayer: THe audience will get to ask questions informally at the end of the debate.

I think this is great that the candidates will have another forum to debate the many issues that face our city. We should all applaud the hard work of Maribeth Becker and Jackie Lightfield to make this important event possible.

I agree with Turfie’s quote about free speech and Diane’s inability to distinguish what constitutes it with respect to the nature of this blog. The debate will be a better one without LWV given their performance as moderator in the last one.

The League has become the Diane Lauricella bandwagon exclusively. They delivered a terrible debate on the first go around and now are actively disparaging the second debate. I think its a shame that the League is losing its reputation over the actions of one person. Diane Lauricella is not to be trusted, and does not do her homework. While I vehemently disagree with much of what Tuffie says here, the mere fact that this blog exists with the free range of comments speaks volumes about fairness and free speech.

As everyone in the city knows, Diane does a less than stellar job at almost everything she touches or hijacks. As a member of the league, as president of the sierra club, and so on, she speaks for no one but herself. The debate will be much better without her. I was a participant at the Leagues recent debate, and it was the worst ever. The League needs a new direction in leadership, or membership will drop to an all time low.

The debate will be much better off without the League’s involvement. Thank you for attempting this huge task.

  • 13 non partisan view // Oct 27, 2007 at 10:42 am

The LWV claims non partisan but anyone who has seen DL in action knows this is not true. o have her speak on their behalf just makes people flinch. She has a clear cut pupose and they allow her to put this forward in their name. I think with Matybeth and Jackie as organizers of this event it will be a good platform. Both know what people think and what people want. They hear the voters and they look at individuals not at party lines.

  • 14 Anonymous // Oct 27, 2007 at 10:48 am

Why do you think she was kicked out of the Norwalk River Watershed group that she founded? She was speaking as their rep w/o clearing it w/ anyone else in the group.

  • 15 Shorefrontgroupie // Oct 27, 2007 at 10:57 am

Thats right lets talk about the issues, we are becoming a laughing stock of Fairfield county.
Its ok this just fuels the fire Go Scott, as said only he could lead a ship of fools
maybe he would make a great mayor we have found the fools.

  • 16 taxpayer // Oct 27, 2007 at 2:34 pm

Thank you to both ladies and all the candidates who give so much time to the citizens of Norwalk. To those who win a special thank you for all the work you will extend to us over the next two years.

  • 17 high road // Oct 27, 2007 at 6:03 pm

You must have a list of who is coming to the debate by now. Which candidates will be there? What’s the proportion of D to R?

  • 18 anonymous // Oct 27, 2007 at 9:54 pm

Rumor is Galen Wells and Walter Briggs are calling dem candidates and telling them not to show tomorrow. It will be interesting to see what courageous dems show. What are the dems scared of ?

  • 19 Anonymous // Oct 27, 2007 at 10:01 pm

Rumor is over 80 people are showing up to hear what the Republicans will say then.

  • 20 Maribeth Becker // Oct 27, 2007 at 10:20 pm

It would be a shame if available candidates stayed away tomorrow, but it is ultimately their decision. I hope that many do decide to join us.

This is a great opportunity for them to make their views known in a public forum and I hope they will take advantage of it.

We heard both the citizens and the candidates complain that there wasn’t a good exchange of information at the previous debate. That is the only reason that we decided to tackle a huge undertaking like this.

Trust me, I have better things to do with my time than get caught in the middle of all of this political mudslinging and controversy. But the community and the candidates deserved another opportunity to interact with each other in an informational setting, so along with my co-sponsors I threw myself into planning this event.

We all worked extremely hard in a very short time to put together what we hope is a high quality event. It was designed to be fair to everyone - especially with the short time frame everyone was given.

I’m really looking forward to it. I hope to see many of you there.
