Norwalk: BOE Chair Bishop-Pullan Ignored Counsel

The Hour is reporting that the BOE knew that the state would likely find problems with the contract for Bruce Morris.

Perosino said House counsel advised the school board to delay voting on the contract, so that state attorneys would have a chance to review the contract.Shortly after the discussion between Perosino and the school board, the board approved Morris’ agreement 6-0-1.

Jodi Bishop-Pullan, board chairwoman, said the call came too close to voting time, when the language had already been worked on by the board attorney.

Bishop-Pullan said she wasn’t sure if, after the agreement was accepted, the state would still seek to examine it.

At that Aug. 28 meeting, during a brief discussion period, Bishop-Pullan warned the public and board that their decision may be challenged.

Oh come on. Jodi Bishop-Pullan should never have rushed that vote through. Comment away.

I repeat my previous post from another thread:
Bruce Morris is not qualified for the BOE position he holds. In the real world, if you lie or misrepresent your crudentials on your resume and it comes out, even years later, you either resign or get fired. Why hasn’t this happened? Because this current BoE and Corda has permitted this farce to continue. I believe the new slate of BOE members will do something about it.

#1. You are not being entirely fair. Bruce Morris did not lie about hsi credentials. He did not have the degree, but he disclosed that. It is not his fault that the school system hired him anyway. And while on teh subject, he did not just apply on his own - he was asked to do so.

If anyone wants to be upset about it, be upset with the BOE, Corda and Opdahl. But don’t call Morris a liar.

Well don’t worry #2, hopefully the New BoE will have plenty of questions for Corda, Opdahl & Morris… Why aren’t you mad that others who applied, who met the educational qualifications, didn’t get the job? But lil’ Brucie M was “asked to apply” you say? By whom? Some good buddy who handed him a job? Lets ask Mr. Gianetti about his “position” and how a guy who ran a deli and a fork lift for Fed Ex got his position of Purchasing Director. Don’t you find it Disgusting that the Board of Education, an instituion of higher learning, sends a message of “you don’t really need a degree for a position at the Board of Ed that requires one.. Look at Bruce Morris - No degree …Look at Sal Corda & Stewart Opdahl, Formulate the cities largest budget, 145 miliion, and not have ANY finance degree or any financial backround at all. Well #2, I don’t just blame a few at the BoE, I’m blaming everyone for letting this freak show continue. 18 more days left untill we have a changing of the guard at BoE. Sal & Co. might have to learn how to actually work. As for Mr. Morris, I have Several more names for him than just “liar”.

I’m shocked, shocked to learn that the BOE would rush a vote through without proper public input!

  • 5 Aunt Bertha // Oct 19, 2007 at 5:47 pm

Charles the Hammer why are you shocked? You are one of the smartest poster here. It was a hurry up and get it through vote and maybe no one will notice it move on the BOE’s part. I know that Sal has a NO confidence vote with the teachers. He has got little respect so he moved on getting the money.

Aunt Bertha, Charles was being sarcastic.

If, as #2 states, Bruce Morris was asked to apply, then I guess the question is why? What credentials does he have that were so much better than other applicants? If I was applying for a position on the BOE and had all the educational and work related experience that was required and the job went to someone without it, I would be contacting a lawyer pretty darn quickly. I can’t believe that no one said anything about this when Morris was hired - or was it a deep kept secret until someone started investigating? If this happened with Morris, how many other unqualified people are making decisions for our children? No wonder our schools are in such a mess.

  • 8 Aunt Bertha // Oct 19, 2007 at 8:45 pm

Silence, I knew that I just had to post. And as far as Bruce Morris and his credentials and someone asking him to apply…maybe the question should be what does he have on someone that lead them to silence him with a job? That maybe the $80,000 a year question.

  • 9 putting my money where my mouth is // Oct 19, 2007 at 10:52 pm

Aunt Bertha, it could also be that he is beholden to his benefactor(s) and that’s why he refused to investigate the yearbook matter for one.

Why am I getting the impression that some people out there wonder why Morris was hired in the first place? For those of us that were around when Victor Herbert created this position (along with the one given to Sherri Mc Creedy/Public Relations) they knew already what they wanted and who. And please don’t forget that Konspore and the Repubs were behind this as well. They backed both these two people into the positions created. Why are people afraid to admit that they were diliberate in filling these positions? Does anyone believe that they hired the best possible candidate for both openings? Get real! The goal was to toss some bones and buy some peace, along with some votes. It is sad in many accounts, but the most serious one is that Bruce is a good person…Sherri is too! If there was any injustice done let’s not blame the people that were hired. Put the blame where it should be placed! Give thanks to Jeff K. Give a thank you Peter N. Andy C. Terry Q. Liz L., and other repubs too numerous to mention here.

Not that I’m a fan of Bruce Morris, but this thread has gotten a little carried away with conspiracies and inaccuracies. Re: #10, there has been a Human Relations officer at the Bd. of Ed. for decades. Ruby Shaw was the first I recall, and believe she was an Asst. Super. so maybe the position was downgraded? Tom Turner filled that postion for years, until Bruce got the job.
The ‘letter of agreement” the Bd. signed with Bruce was truly stupid, when they should just pay him for the hours worked. Then maybe it would loook like we don’t need a full time Human Relations officer, what do you think? That’s the problem, since no one knows exactly what he does.

  • 12 here we go again // Oct 22, 2007 at 4:25 pm

I keep thinking about the guy he beat out for the job, must be bittersweet at best knowing all this. ,,shame we don’t hear about him,,he is a good man I’m told.

  • 13 AnonymousDem // Oct 22, 2007 at 4:39 pm

There are two issues here. 1. Bruce is not credentialed and doesn’t belong in this position. 2. Bruce should be paid for his hours worked.

  • 14 Aunt Bertha // Oct 22, 2007 at 6:41 pm

Tom Turner was not very strong in this job. He passed away and the job was vacant for a few months until Bruce was named as the new head of Human relations. He is not qualified plain and simple. We need more teachers in the buildings and less admin down town.

  • 15 BOEAnon // Oct 22, 2007 at 9:22 pm

Correction…#14…Tom Turner was the assistant to Ralph Sloan, and at the time handled human relation issues, along with other duties for the super. When Victor was hand picked by the Konspore Group Tom’s position was eliminated before Herbert got his first pay check. Aunt Bertha may not feel that Tom was strong, but for those of us who knew him he was one heck of a guy who stood tall, was full of integrity and was a fair and honest man. Tom was widely respected and had a proven track record of dealing successfully with many human relation issues in the district. But the Konspore Group didn’t like poor Tom. Tom possessed a BA & MA, and had been involved in public school education, both in the classroom and in central office admin for over twenty five years. He was highly regarded throughout the State and in Hartford. But this wasn’t good enough for the Konspore Group. So several months after Tom’s position as assistant to the super is eliminated, they post a newly created position called Human Relations Officer, and hire Bruce Morris. No BA, no MA, no public school experience, no teaching experience, no administrative experience, no human relations experience, no nothing! Bruce Morris is a midget compared to what Tom Turner was, plain & simple. Bruce Morris couldn’t sharpen Tom’s pencils. A few years after the group ruined Tom’s life, he passed away. Welcome to Norwalk folks.
