Norwalk: Police Get Segway

How cool is this? Norwalk’s police department now has an actual Segway, courtesy of a homeland security grant. The grant kinda places restrictions on the “intended” use of the Segway, but its likely to get some use as a community patrol vehicle.

Because the $6,200 cost was paid with federal Homeland Security funds, the Segway’s primary mission will be to transport bomb squad members, who must don their heavy, unwieldy suits, to the scene of suspicious packages or other bomb threats, Rilling said.

Otherwise, the Segway, capable of running for an eight-hour shift, will be used for community policing, special events and patrol functions.

Rilling said he hoped the Segway, complete with flashing lights and siren, will help officers perform their jobs more efficiently.

“If we find that the officers are using them and find them effective, then we will look at the possibility of expanding their use,” Rilling said, adding that the department may use seized drug money to purchase two more Segways.

Rilling said he would invite bomb squad members from the Stamford Police Department, which does not have a Segway, to begin training on the devices in Norwalk.

If we got it for nothing it was worth it. The “Segway” was supposed to REVOLINIZE the way the common man moved around his town and city. It was a major FLOP. The take some practice and are very unwieldy. The only reason they are still in business is that they decided to sell them at a deep discount to the Government both local, state and National. It is kind of a subsidy program. I can just see a bomb squad member riding this thing rather then walking and planning his strategy to disarm a bomb, instead of trying to keep the contraption from running off a curb. I hope the police are very careful in using this thing as it can be dangerous when run off a curb in an emergency and are much more likely to be involved with a car vs Segway accident. 20 million people can’t be wrong and I bet it will not be long until the SEGWAY is stored away in some garage closet in NPD headquarters. On the other hand there are many who tried them and swear by them as being stable and fairly easy to use. The problem is that they would not buy one when bicycles are so much cheaper and require no service.

Norwalk should really start to reconsider a motorcycle unit for the future traffic jams that will not allow police cars to arrive in a timely manner.

awesome tool for police work , drinkers in the parks look for the black and white , these scooters come out of nowhere,,they are a great tool.

still give credit to the bike patrol they have done well just the same..

you are so right #13 , Vets park, the pasture and then we have Oyster park where crime happens almost on a daily basis be it inside the park or on the outskirts where cruisers cannot access,,did Norwalk ever have a motorcycle patrol?

If I am not mistaken, I believe a friend of mine bought a Police Harley Davidson back in the 1960’s that was put up for sale by the city after the idea was tested then. 40+ years is a long time ago, today they might be a much wiser choice, as fast, maneuverable vehicles in tight spaces. The problem is that Harley Davidson Police models are most likely the same price as a cruiser. Many cities are turning to foreign made police model bikes. There are quite a few members of the NPD who now ride motorcycles so it would not seem to be a problem of getting volunteers to take that duty, after proper training.
