Norwalk: Chamber Membership Sparks Controversy

by turfgrrl

October 4th, 2007 · 62 Comments

The story starts innocently enough, a campaign worker for the Moccia campaign sends out an email appeal for advertisers for a Moccia fundraiser. The email landed in the email box if Democratic Town chair Galen Wells, who promptly fired off an email to the campaign volunteer and Art Scialabba who is the Moccia campaign manager replied.

Galen wrote:

Are you sending this out to a Chamber list? If so, please
forward it to me so that I can use it for the Dems. The Chamber tries to
deal evenhandedly with political campaigns.

Art replies:

As you may know, one thing I did when I was Chairman of the RTC was to sign
us up as a member of the Chamber of Commerce. With that, as I am sure you
know, comes a yearly membership book, listing members names, addresses,
etc…

If you need a copy of that book, I am sure that the chamber would be happy
to provide it to you once the DTC joined as a member, since that book is
something that I believe all members do receive.

Once you have the book, I am sure your people can do exactly what we did,
and that is to create your own computer list to use from the information
detailed in the membership book.

Obviously, since we created our own list and since we did not receive
anything special from the chamber that as members we should not have
received, we therefore have nothing that we will be passing on to you.

However, if you are still interested in our list, and if you don’t have the
time or the man power to create one on your own, our list may be available
to the DTC for a fair price. Then again, I really don’t see that happening -
but you can always make us an offer….

So what can we conclude from this beyond the “gee, Galen is lazy” aspect? My 2007 Who’s Who Greater Norwalk Chamber Business Directory, does in fact likes the Norwalk Republican Town Committee as a member along with the email addresses of members. But Galen could have gone to the and seen the entire membership list with emails without even having to be a member.

Is this a sign of desperate times for the Norwalk Democrats that they can’t even muster a volunteer to cut and paste email addresses off a web site? A Republican at the HQ opening last night remarked, “It seems that the Democrats aren’t even running this year, they don’t even have the election day listed on their calendar.” Sure enough, as of this morning, doesn’t list the election day. Of course the Republicans haven’t mustered a volunteer to produce an RTC web site this year, but at least the Moccia web site does. The Briggs web site does not.

This is all basic marketing 101. At least Democrat Andy Garfunkel has single handily managed to run an actual campaign this fall. And yes, he managed to get that election date on his web site. (Joanne Romano did not.)

Art…you make me proud to be a republican!

  • 2 anonymous // Oct 4, 2007 at 12:25 pm

Galen wells is an idiot and must go. As a democrat she embarrasses me. She actually believed that they must give it to her. What an act of stupidity.

  • 3 indiga // Oct 4, 2007 at 12:49 pm

What sort of agreement does the Chamber have with it’s membership about protecting their emails? Most organizations are very careful to ensure members that their emails will not be used for solicitation — whether commercial or political. If the RTC used the lsit without permission that is — at the very least — unethical.

  • 4 Anonymous // Oct 4, 2007 at 12:54 pm

Spoken like a true moneygrubbing Republican, Artie “The Scab” does justice to his party.

  • 5 Anonymous // Oct 4, 2007 at 1:05 pm

If the Chamber posted its members’ email addresses and allowed them to be harvested from its website without getting permission from the members, then it could be liable for doing that.

  • 6 Anonymous // Oct 4, 2007 at 1:09 pm

Indiga is naive at best and an idiot at worst. If the chamber gives the list to its members, they fully expect it will be used. Trying to defend Galen is an act of futility. She is the chief idiot and you and yours continue to follow her. What is wrong with you?

  • 7 equal time // Oct 4, 2007 at 1:18 pm

If Galen and friends are so interested in this list and Indiga thinks this is an ethical violation well then, go to this link on the Chamber website and you too can get a list of members for whatever list you want to create. Art Scialabba is doing what any other campaign chairman would do if they knew how to look for ther right source. If you are a member of the Chamber like most of us are, you would know that the Chamber does not promote any political party but instead represents all those who do business in Norwalk and the city as a whole. Art’s off the cuff comment to Galen was just that, why on earth would she expect someone to drop their resources in her lap? Another reason why she should not be running this party.

    Posting private emails, turfgrrl?

  • 9 equal time // Oct 4, 2007 at 1:29 pm

The e-mails are not private, they are on the WWW for all to see. Each member signs up and their company info, as well as their e-mail address and website are also listed. Stop trying to make something out of nothing. If galen knew how to be a leader, she would have known this. That’s why many of us stopped following her lead. Matt as a campaign manager you too should have known that this information is available to anyone who takes the time to look for it.

  • 10 Anonymous // Oct 4, 2007 at 1:40 pm

Hey Idigna, once again you gave out false infomation, and was again called to task for it. You know Reggie Jackson was once quoted concerning Steinbrenner and Billy Martin, he said one was a convicted liar and the other a born liar, I think you are close to both. Hey did you ever apologize to the Mayor for lying and stating that he opposed Historical Designation for Camp Street, you know the Golden Hill association on this very blog pointed out that never happened. Not exactly a partisan group. Never hear a retraction from you. How are your property values doing? Oh that’s right it is about Hystorical values not property values
concerning the Norwalk Inn house. Are you going picket? The Chamber is going to hold the debate at the Inn

  • 11 mattw // Oct 4, 2007 at 1:41 pm

We’ve had the list for a while, actually. Walter is a member of the Chamber.

I was noting that Turf posted private emails between two other people, a practice generally frowned upon amongst bloggers.

  • 12 Anonymous // Oct 4, 2007 at 1:42 pm

Hey Matt, what do your polls show, rumour is, that not even a tremor of recognititon for WB.

  • 13 indiga // Oct 4, 2007 at 2:03 pm

#10, once again, you bring out your vitriol for nothing. I stand by my comments on email lists and the obligation of an organization — any organization — to protect its membership list from receiving unsolicited emails from other sources.

I’m happy to concede to Golden Hill’s more level heads in the State Historic Register listing issue and delighted that the Mayor, the neighborhood, and preservationists are on the same side of the table this time around. That’s the way it should always be when it comes to historic preservation in Norwalk.

  • 14 Anonymous // Oct 4, 2007 at 2:06 pm

Thats not what was asked, you on this blog stated that the Mayor tried to stop the Camp street designation, Do you admit that was false information? If someone gave you bad info just admit and state that you were wrong. .

  • 15 Anonymous // Oct 4, 2007 at 2:16 pm

Indiga, once again, the Chamber of Commerce members are aware that their information is public knowledge. What part of that don’t you get? You are continuously trying to stir controversy where there is none. Why not just admit that what Galen did was just plain dumb and shows her lack of committment to her party by not being aware of how to get this information but instead demands the info from the opposing party? I’d make her pay for it too! If she doesn’t know its available online for free she deserves to pay for it. Its like those term papers sold online to unsuspecting students who are not aware they can get the info for free if they want to cheat!

  • 16 Anonymous // Oct 4, 2007 at 2:23 pm

Andy Garfunkel is running an actual campaign? Ok, so next he’ll be running around kissing babies! Come on, that’s not a campaign, its a Mr. America contest. Seems Joanne is the only one who is reaching out to ALL the voters with her thoughtful website that includes those who speak spanish. From what I can see Andy is running a ME ME ME campaign and the heck with those who won’t vote anyway! Or so he thinks! What a shame that the Dems haven’t thought of reaching out to minorities. Way to go once again Galen!

  • 17 Anonymous // Oct 4, 2007 at 3:38 pm

Andy will kick Joanne’s ass in the election. He has the advantage of being both an incumbent and a savvier marketer. Plus he’s done a great job. Joanne just needs a job, period. That’s why she’s running.

  • 18 turfgrrl // Oct 4, 2007 at 3:55 pm

mattw: And have the usual assortment of posters complaining that I distorted Galen’s words/meaning? I think it is incredibly stupid to fire off emails like this to campaign workers.
  • 19 turfgrrl // Oct 4, 2007 at 3:56 pm

For the record, the Norwalk Chamber of Commerce let’s its members chose whether to have emails made public or not. That’s pretty standard amongst chambers, the mission is after all commerce.
  • 20 Anonymous // Oct 4, 2007 at 3:57 pm

Oh and Andy doesn’t? How else will he pay all those atty fees? Don’t kid yourself about him kicking Joanne’s ass, AIN’T gonna happen! She’s proven before that she can win an election without all the hooplah! Since then alot more people know her, so stop being so confident about a 50/50 race.

  • 21 Fact Checker // Oct 4, 2007 at 4:31 pm

#20 Why do you feel the need to continually personally attack Andy Garfunkel. Could you be a bitter ex-wife? I used to enjoy this site, but lately it seems like there are some people using it just to trash talk others, your comments about Andy have nothing to do with the Chamber of Commerce thread.

  • 22 indythinker // Oct 4, 2007 at 4:44 pm

#22 Check again-Turf’s post clearly makes it a part of this posting “At least Democrat Andy Garfunkel has single handily managed to run an actual campaign this fall. And yes, he managed to get that election date on his web site. (Joanne Romano did not.)”

By the way, Romano’s website has always had a banner on eaqch page at the bottom which clearly tells everyone when election day is. Also if you go to “register to vote” its there as well and since this thread started, I notice she has also added it to her calendar of events page. So I guess she’s reading and learning!

  • 23 Anonymous // Oct 4, 2007 at 4:54 pm

#23-We will all be old and with wrinkles some day. No need to personally attack anyone. You can attack their policies and their way of handling things but sometimes enough is enough!

  • 24 Anonymous // Oct 4, 2007 at 4:58 pm

To Indiga and others from the website of the Norwalk Chamber of Commerce

    Announcements …
The Chamber recommends members for referral requests which continually come into the Chamber office, and encourages members to do business with other members whenever possible.

The Chamber provides members a variety of means by which to promote and market their business. This may be accomplished through acquiring a mailing list, placing inserts in regular mailings, placing ads in the annual directory, or by placing ads or inserts within the newsletter.

  • 25 turfgrrl // Oct 4, 2007 at 5:05 pm

    Personal attacks will be removed.

    The Management.

  • 26 disgusted // Oct 4, 2007 at 5:06 pm

#21-why is it ok for people to make comments on other threads that Joanne is incompetent and not qualified to run for this office or that she is ineffective as a councilperson(not true)? Why is it ok for remarks about her to continually be posted by Andy’s supporters and its not ok for anyone to make comments about Andy..By the way, just how many ex-wives does he have and what’s the story behind ethic complaints?

With all the talk about sparks, I trust our gas plant is safe seems Danbury fire had a full morning with their Hocon gas plant,,

an we were worried about Gaults property?

  • 28 turfgrrl // Oct 4, 2007 at 5:11 pm

disgusted: Job performance is fair game, subjective, but fair game. Attacking someone’s personal life is out of bounds. For the most part people here keep to the performance issues, when it strays I will remove the posts.
Ethics complaints are not public, btw, unless the party alleged to have made an infraction releases the information.
  • 29 disgusted // Oct 4, 2007 at 5:40 pm

Does this count as a personal attack?

“Joanne just needs a job, period. That’s why she’s running”.

  • 30 anonymous // Oct 4, 2007 at 5:50 pm

mattw: then why didn’t the campaign share walter brigg’s list with galen, the hottie, wells ?
    trouble in paradise ?
