Norwalk: Working Families Party Endorses Many Dems

October 3rd, 2007 · 46 Comments

The Working Families Party has endorsed twelve (out of 15) of Democratic candidates for Common Council in addition to its earlier endorsement of Walter Briggs for Mayor.

Receiving the cross Endorsement are:

At Large:

Mike Geake, Amanda Brown, Doug Sutton, Fred Bondi, and Marc Bradley

District:

Steve Serasis for Council District A

Kevin Poruban and Laurel Lindstrom for Council District C

Anna Duleep and Gail Wall for Council District D

Gwen Briggs and Bill Krummel for Council District E

“I’m thrilled by the endorsement of the Working Families Party,” said Michael Geake, a Democrat running for an at-large seat on Norwalk’s City Council. “It means a lot to me to have the support of a group that is standing up for regular working people in Norwalk.” “All of the candidates we’ve endorsed in Norwalk will stand up for our values, and will work hard for Norwalk’s working families.” said Daisy Franklin of Norwalk, who co-chairs of the 4th Congressional District chapter of Working Families. “By voting for those cross-endorsed candidates on Row D, you can send a message that you care about the issues we’ve been fighting for, like good living-wage jobs, responsible contracting, and affordable healthcare.”

The interesting thing about the endorsement is who is not on it. Matt Miklave, who consistently votes against labor contracts is understandably not a fan of the Working Families Party. But Carvin Hilliard and Phyliss Bolden, both of District B, were instrumental in voting for issues that the Working Families Party has been behind. Like labor contracts and the responsible contractor ordinance. Surprisingly, Kevin Poruban got an endorsement despite abstaining for contract votes and otherwise not supporting most issues supported by the Working Families Party. That is the only surprise here. Gwen Briggs and Bill Krummel have also have a checkered voting history on labor issues as well. Doug Sutton has over the years demonstrated a stronger commitment to labor issues.

The Connecticut Working Families Party is a coalition of community organizations, labor unions and neighborhood activists who are united to support issues like health care, quality education, and livable wages into the public debate, and to hold politicians accountable on those issues.

Of all the candidates endorsed only Mike Geake has perfect record of supporting the issues the Working Families cares about. He has consistently demonstrated a concern these issues from his role as second taxing district commissioner and as a candidate.

Translation of Galen Wells remarks about incumbent Matt Miklave: He couldn’t get the Working Families’ endorsement if he begged for it. He’s anti union and the unions really dislike him.

I would like to know what these people feel they gain by being on this line? Most people vote party lines or they split between dem and rep. All it is is a feel good endorsement. Interesting that Bolden and Hilliard didn’t make the cut. They are the ones on the dem council who have spoken out for the people of Norwalk and these other bozo’s get picked with the exception of Bondi, Sutton and Krummel the rest are just a bunch of yes men for the party. Did you really think Gwen Briggs wouldn’t get it since her husband is running for mayor? Hey what happened to Miklave? Finally PO enough people?

I can’t speak for the others, but for me the endorsement is a recognition of what I have done for working families in the past and a commitment to keep doing so in the future. And while “most people” do vote “major party”, there is a large enough minority to sway most elections in Norwalk who won’t vote for either; just ask Alex Knopp. A vote on line D sends the message that the voter expects that candidate to work to bring good paying jobs and affordable housing to Norwalk.

I am a card carrying, dues paying member of WFP, but I had to sit out this round of endorsements because I am a candidate. What I can tell you is Carvin and Phyllis voluntarily did not seek the endorsement because it would have taken additional resources to secure two ballot positions in District B, and the odds are pretty good theirs will not be close elections simply because of teir district’s demographics.

Republican’s don’t usually get these endorsements because it is the belief that they don’t care about working families etc. This not true and sends a bad message to the voters. Unfortunately some people get these endorsements and have done absolutely nothing to deserve them bu get them because of the D infront of their name.

  • 5 MGeake // Oct 3, 2007 at 1:20 pm

WFP only endorses candidates who ask for their endorsement, who complete a questionaire on their positions on issues important to WFP, and who make themselves available for an interview.

Only one Republican even asked for the endorsement this year; their questionaire was turned in only cursorily completed, and they did not return phone calls inviting them to the interview or (after the interview date had passed) to participate in a phone interview. So it wasn’t WFP that dropped the ball here.

  • 6 dem4life // Oct 3, 2007 at 1:34 pm

Republicans don’t support any living wage so they don’t care about working families.

  • 7 Anonymous // Oct 3, 2007 at 1:54 pm

One more time dem4life you need to check your records, you always make such a broad statement when it comes to Republicans.

  • 8 dem4life // Oct 3, 2007 at 2:05 pm

Figures an anonymous Republicon would complain and yet fail to provide one name to rebut my assertion. Go ahead, name a living wage supporter.

  • 9 Anonymous // Oct 3, 2007 at 2:21 pm

How about the Mayor. he supported the concept, although he had some problems with enforecment provisons which he felt were to difficult to manage, and he could have vetoed it, and he did not. Is that Republican enough, also do not forget the union endorsements. Oh I know he does nothing but smile so everyone just supports him because of that. Many on this blog continue to underestimate him and what he has done, and will continue to do in his next term.
but if nothing else you will have 2 more years to distort the record.

  • 10 Anonymous // Oct 3, 2007 at 2:35 pm

dem4life if you can find the date of the vote and go back to the minutes of that meeting you can find out who voted for or against.

  • 11 a voter // Oct 3, 2007 at 3:00 pm

The Norwalk Republicans have decided to play dirty politics. Paul Kokias (R) canididate for the third taxing district sent a hand written note to the home of Dave Watts calling he and his wife a “stupid family”.
I was shocked that Mr. Kokias would write such a note and he should not be elected. It seems that a clean election is too much to ask for!

  • 12 dem4life // Oct 3, 2007 at 3:49 pm

Why do you assume that anyone in Norwalk voted for a living wage law? Earth to Republicans, Norwalk doesn’t have one. Here’s another earth to Republicans message; your smiling Mayor deposited literature on my mailbox and it did not state anywhere on it that he supported a living wage. Nor does he, or any Republican running support an increase of affordable housing or affordable health coverage. Republicans like to say one thing and do another, like George W. Bush’s SCHIP veto. Locally, how getting Walmart and others to provide health insurance to all their workers and not play the 25 hour game. Or is it easier to ignore the crisis at the health clinic and pat yourselves on the back?

  • 13 Anonymous // Oct 3, 2007 at 4:16 pm

Dem 4 life, you are about distorting the facts. Check the minutes of the council meeting, and you will see that the Mayor did support the ordinance, just becasue one piece of literature did not say that, does not mean it did not happen. As far as affordable housing, is it my imagination or has the Mayor been at every venue talking about the various redevelopment projects touting the mixed us of workforce housing and lifestyle stores and rebuilding neigborhoods. As far as Walmart, that is a state issue and you know it, The Mayor was credited by the operators along with another Republican Shays for helping to get a $400,000 grant for the free dental clinic, He also donated the Mayor’s Ball money to the Community Health Clinic. There are many other items on a one on basis that he has been involved in. Your sign off should not DEM FOR LIFE, but DEM FOR LIE.

  • 14 rep4life // Oct 3, 2007 at 4:18 pm

Bushes rejection of children’s healthcare is just rediculous. Local companies should provide at least minimum healthcare for all their employees. It is unexcusable that in this day and age so many are without it. As with any company most employees pay for a portion of the benefits and there should be no exceptions. dem4life you continue to make vast assumptions for all republicans and send the wrong message out to the voters. Local republicans are not always lock step with those in Washington.

  • 15 Anonymous // Oct 3, 2007 at 4:20 pm

#13-do you have the date of that meeting? and the link?

  • 16 hitcow // Oct 3, 2007 at 4:24 pm

Republicans only care if gays are trying to get married. Then they go out of the way to assure they don’t get health benefits.

dem4life, don’t even argue with those repubicans. They are all going to hell anyways.

  • 17 dem4life // Oct 3, 2007 at 4:34 pm

Number 13, your defense of the Republicans is dubious. You apparently can’t read. Norwalk did not pass any living wage law. There are no minutes to check because there was no law proposed. If you took a moment to web search what a living wage law like San Francisco or Chicago, as examples, passed you would then realize what it is. The city can pass any law that all businesses must comply with. But if you must blame the state, well then that is another Republican, Governor Rell.

If the Mayor took anytime to visit the clinic, he would see that the people using the clinic are … from Walmart. They sit in the waiting area in their smocks. But maybe that would be too obvious a clue.

  • 18 Anonymous // Oct 3, 2007 at 4:35 pm

Hitcow, There is a story about two people sitting in front of a nun on a bus. They both were talkiong about moving, one said they were going to Montana, as their were no Catholics there, the other said that he was going to Montana as there were no Catholics there. and so on and so on.. Finally the nun tapped one on the shoulder and said “why don’t you both go to hell as there are no Catholics there.” Same thought to you about Republicans.

  • 19 here we go again // Oct 3, 2007 at 5:03 pm

just came from the farmers market, I’m sure they will support Walter all one of them,,talk is Norwalk is now off the list..

nice going mayor you have my vote against you

    :)

  • 20 Anonymous // Oct 3, 2007 at 5:16 pm

Yeah #19 the out of towners who wanted free parking and as the person from Trumbull who runs the market said,, “I will go somwhere else where I can make more money” are all going to vote for Walter. Once again distortion, Norwalk residents have to pay to park, anyone else has to pay to park. Virgin Air rented part of the Maritime Garage and pays to park, as does Spinakers, those big bad businesses you Dems always complain about. The farmers make a profit, nothing wrong with that, but they make it sound as if they were giving things away and the big bad bogeyman chased them away. Ask the operator from Trumbull if a Norwalker can go ot their lakes and parks as a non resident a get in free, of course not, They were offered several free sites and turned them down. The missinfo just keeps on coming. The lies will keep comng as the campaign goes on, but try as you might, the Republicans are going to win from Mayor to Council.

  • 21 Just The Facts // Oct 3, 2007 at 5:44 pm

Oh great, that’s something to be proud of. Chasing away farmers over $10 a day in parking fees for 16 weeks. And the farmers who did give away food to the local food kitchens? Guess they don’t count. Another fine example of putrid Republican thinking.

  • 22 Anonymous // Oct 3, 2007 at 5:51 pm

Good grief, people… if you wanna argue politics, then for God’s sake, defend your argument. Got an issue? You could start there. She smells, he smells… if that’s all you’ve got, it isn’t much to sway an election.

Another thing. It’s quite apparent that some posters do not have a clue about the players. It isn’t so easy as defending a party these days. Didn’t you know it’s not in vogue to vote a straight lever? How embarrassing to admit one’s inability to think for oneself.

  • 23 Concerned Citizen // Oct 3, 2007 at 5:51 pm

Oh Look Hit-cup (excuse me)crawled out from under the rock he lives under…and he came out in the daylight!!! will wonders never cease! Maybe if you dopey dems stop supporting the trial lawyers of America, there wouldn’t be so many mal-practice law suits, the malpractice insurance would come as would Doctor fees. Let’s not forget all the illegals the dopey dems like hit-cip (excuse me) want to cover. let’s listen how they contribute to our economy with that brilliant Dem math, you know, for every dollar they pay in the system, they take 5 back in programs & benefits. Hey hit-cup (excuse me), once we repub’s get to hell, I’m sure you and you fellow dem’s will love to give us a tour.

  • 24 Barney Fife // Oct 3, 2007 at 6:03 pm

The hot dog guy at the green isn’t paying anything maybe he is also a republican,

The poor bastard that owns the bakery downtown rents spaces for his employees ,,yes your list could be extended to real people also..#20

by the way maybe someone can tell Harry

DRUGS STOLEN PROPERTY and PROSTITUTION was all going on today at Auto Zone parking lot and not one damm person was paying anything to the city in taxes or permits maybe this info will get Harry off of Dick’s pr campaign long enough to go see whats going on,,its opposite the court house if that helps.

The collection bins in that parking lot is used for something other than clothes,,I’m sure the new organized department will show us new crime numbers,,its sad the old guys who are so good just got anther kick in the face for doing a good job..

maybe we should now have a crime thread, report what you see , Dick needs help in seeing crime happen..

    test

  • 26 Return of the 25 // Oct 3, 2007 at 6:24 pm

Oops, hit Post before I finished. Testing the waters here, but if candidates would actually talk about real issues in this forum then maybe all this back and forth would make more sense.

  • 27 turfgrrl // Oct 3, 2007 at 6:37 pm

MGeake: According to a press release by Bysiewicz’s office, the bill that took effect October 1, eliminated the requirement of any resources to petition for a ballot placement. Cross Endorsement: “Current law prohibits a nominated major or minor party candidate from appearing on the ballot as a petitioning candidate for the same office. The bill lifts this prohibition under certain circumstances. Under the bill, a party that has not attained minor party status for the office in question, but has for at least one other office on that ballot, may cross-endorse a nominated major or minor party candidate by petitioning such candidate’s name onto the ballot.”
Carvin and Phyllis should have been cross endorsed since they actually delivered the WFP issues. Miklave not trying makes sense. Poruban getting it doesn’t.

#20 here are some of my half baked thoughts

I was told the city wants $1500 for next year per vendor,(farmer)don’t know is it worth that much?

We were told the market hurts businesses , but the owner of the blog spoke to one of many vendors in SoNo who shopped there.Didn’t sound like there was truoble in SoNo over the market after all.

I pay one price for admittance of 40 dollars to go to all of Ct state parks so why not the farmers market pay one price no $1500 or take it to the curb.

Here is the profile of the shiftless farmer who like you said was offerd free spots,,,, he sad no he wasn’t given any alternatives he was told take it or leave,,I always told news reporters two side to each story lately Amanda and John have been getting them, wonder if theres one here?

    http://plaskosfarm.com/page3.html

I’m sure Johns story would go great on the democratic page on what they do for St Vincents,,not all republicans think like you thank god..

Thanks for taking a stand on the republicans side tonight I’m sure Dicks proud of you for telling us how stupid we were letting the farmer stiff us on a parking spot,,you did well I’m sure the rest of us are reading in shame,,you know read the part what they do with their money, they donate to Swim Across the Sound.

So I take it from reading your post we the residents will lose at the polls I’m sure that was the smartest thing you could say..

I hear Virgin Air has problems with the sewage plants air,,how nice they can afford to keep the windows shut, or is that just a rumor..any one get a whiff the day after open house at the DPW? talk about damage control what did they do hold it until after the last visitor left?

    http://kids.niehs.nih.gov/jvvegs.htm

I have been running this all week , suppose this will be the only market my kids will see next year..

    Thanks Dick

  • 29 MGeake // Oct 4, 2007 at 7:39 am

TG: problem was, WFP had to submit its list of endorsements weeks ago, long before the law took affect, so they had to petition a stand-in candidate onto the ballot in all the districts where they hadn’t previously earned the line. Last week, all those “stand-ins” withdrew their “candidacies” so WFP could substitute the “real” candidates this week.

The issue was actually having the ballot line, an absurdity wrought by our beloved legislature. WFP doesn’t have the line this year in District B, and Carvin and Phyllis honorably didn’t want to waste WFP resources petitioning for an endorsement they’ll likely win handily without.

Next year, this absurdity is gone, and WFP will be free to cross-endorse.
