Norwalk: Why Extend Rillings Contract 4 More Years?

This is a puzzler. Chief Rilling applied for a job in Weston. And so Norwalk wants to extend his contract another 4 years. Rilling has demonstrated he has a problem supervising sex crimes investigations. He has allowed investigations to be botched such as the “spa” prostitution investigations and likely others that we all don’t even know about.

The commissioners said they also plan to extend Rilling’s contract until September 2011 at the Oct. 18 meeting. His salary will be discussed as part of the contract process, they said. Currently, the chief makes $102,000 per year and has held the job since 1995.

“We felt it appropriate that the chief remain in place as a guiding force,” said Commissioner Peter Torrano, a former Norwalk police captain. The commissioners voted unanimously in March to extend Rilling’s contract by two years, agreeing that the department needs stable leadership during a major exodus of experienced officers who’d opted for the Deferred Retirement Option Plan. Before that, Rilling’s five year contract was extended for one year in July 2006.

update: The original post implied that Rilling personally botched the spa investigation. Rilling did not personally botch the investigation, rather he is the the chief of the force and therefor is responsible only as leader of the force.

“Obviously I would like to see the numbers lower, but overall I’m pleased. We did not experience an increase that that other communities have seen,” Police Chief Harry Rilling said. “I think we have ended up rather well this year.”

Just make him mayor wouldn’t we save money?

Odd how the above pr came out, wonder if the Advocate was stroked on this one?

Thats scary that someone is pleased with those numbers. Quality of life issues that lack in Norwalk are speeding down residential roads, drugs, gangs, bank robbers, graffiti maybe we need new leadership if the leaders are pleased with these numbers as well. Why am I not pleased??????? Corda is pleased with the school system. The mayor should be appalled by both. I wounder if he is.

The Mayor doesn’t demand better performance from any department. Look how he let’s DPW run things.

DPW has been singing its own tune for many years and until there is a shakeup in there nothing will change.
Don’t blame this Mayor for something that has been allowed for way too long. We are paying for a supervisor who isn’t even a citizen instead of promoting within, if you call the office they are rude and condescending and they do what they want, when they want. Its time for a turnover there.

Blame Knopp for the current state of DPW. The previous management was Esposito’s boy.

20 years from now you’ll still be saying “blame Knopp” for every problem facing Norwalk. Get real. Moccia has been the mayor for almost two years now - what’s his position on DPW? What’s his position on the Police Chief? Last I remember he put his full weight of support behind Chief Rilling and the Fire Chief as well.

    # 6 - Blaming the last mayor is a tradition in Norwalk. Knopp was still blaming every problem in the City on Esposito after Knopp had been Mayor for four years; if he could do so for 4 years, Moccia’s certainly entitled to do so for 2 years. :-)
