    Section 409A and deferred compensation.

Recently, the IRS has decided that as of the 2008-2009 school year to add an extra income tax penalty to teachers who elect year-round pay. I understand the logic, but does anyone know what NPS does with the interest collected from the deferred pay? For example, if I defer my pay until the summer, almost $8000 collected from September on sits in an account until July and August…if enough teachers elect extended pay, that could be significant $$$$. Just wondering~

What happens if the firefighters refuse to work overtime?

Is it possible that Anonymous,Nico, and Watchdog are the same people?

Is it possible that there are actually 28 posters all calling themselves Anonymous?

Will the “real” Anonymous please stand up.”

I think we should all use the screen name of Anonymous. It will be fun to see if we can tell who is who.

#4. That is really sort of funny. Could there be only five of us posting with many names? Anne do you know the reason teachers that ake pay year rond are being singled out and taxed? Thanks

  • 6 Anne Sullivan // Sep 14, 2007 at 3:46 pm

    Hi Aunt Bertha,

Nope, I guess the IRS thought it was a loophole that needed to be closed. If NPS decides that all 10-month staff will take 12 month extended pay, then the IRS won’t make staff pay an extra tax. However, if NPS continues to give staff a choice, than 10 month extended pay employees will be subject to an extra tax. You can find more info at irs.gov.

With al the firefighters have gone through with their contracts have you ever seen them give anything but their best? They know what their job is and even though they get the royal shaft, they are professional and caring in everything they do.

  • 8 anonymous // Sep 14, 2007 at 4:28 pm

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT ? WE HAVE SOME OF THE BEST PAID FIREFIGHTERS IN THE ENTIRE USA !!!!!!! EVERYONE IS SUPPOSED TO GIVE THEIR BEST. ALMOST EVERY ONE OF THEM HAVE FULL TIME SECOND JOBS AND THEIR FAMILY INCOMES ARE HIGHER THAN OUR AVERAGE FAMILY INCOMES. SPARE US YOUR RHETORIC.

  • 9 Anonymous // Sep 14, 2007 at 5:00 pm

#8- they have second jobs to subsidize their regular pay and insurance costs. Who are you kidding? And what about the poor kid that is forced to retire because of injuries sustained on the job and now he finds that his family will not be covered? Do you think he wanted to be burned so severely as to have to give up a job he worked so hard to get? Come on, give us all a break and don’t bother commenting on something you know nothing about.

  • 10 #13 of the Miserable 25 // Sep 14, 2007 at 6:59 pm

Poster # 8 wrote in a loud voice “ALMOST EVERY ONE OF THEM HAVE FULL TIME SECOND JOBS AND THEIR FAMILY INCOMES ARE HIGHER THAN OUR AVERAGE FAMILY INCOMES.”

And how do they get these higher than average incomes?

It’s called work. No one gives them the money, they put in the hours.

You also state that “We have some of the best paid firefighters in the USA” Is that the Norwalk Fire Department or is that the “We” fire department.

Can you back your statement up with facts for Firefighters salaries in other comparable size city’s in the East and West Coast?

I said before if you think the fire department and the police department are screwing you, then the next time your house catches on fire, dial PAWS, and the next time you are being mugged call the ASPCA.

Unless you have ever had a fire at night in your home and your loved ones are not all accounted for, and you then hear those sirens rounding the corner of your street, you have no conception of the value of firefighters. It is very close to having a religious experience.

  • 11 Leon Novac // Sep 14, 2007 at 7:09 pm

Or if you or a loved one is in a terrible automobile accident had have to depend on the skill and knowledge to have the Fire Department rescue and extraction team cut you out of that nightmare situation keeping you in all one piece and all the time working on you and yours to keep you alive. Talk about Hell, forget it just about every firefighters has been there and done that, they have stared Satan in the face many times, and told him to F— OFF.

Pray your time never comes to make you eat your words.

  • 12 Mr Greenpeace // Sep 14, 2007 at 7:52 pm

I have always stood behind loacal 830,I would trust as they are responding to county street to the high school field to assist a official who has been injured in a game and seems to be in a bad way with some sort of trauma the one who thinks the firefighters don’t deserve much else may understand they are here for us no matter what.

I hope we in the morning we read the man is recouping from the efforts of our firefighters..

Sometimes I weigh in on things and rant tonight I pray for the injured official and forget what I read in posting number #8 .

Thanks for the update, Mr. Greenpeace. I heard the sirens and wondered what was happening at NHS.

Having had the Fire Department answer emergency medical calls at my own home, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate them. The citizens of Norwalk are very fortunate to have such a well-trained, professional and caring group of fire fighters and emergency medical technicians. They deserve to be paid well. That’s one place I don’t mind my tax dollars being spent.

I guess I have enough time to post rationaly , your welcome nwlknative,

while this was happening another call for a car accident came in as well a double header on both sides of the city, conn ave was the accident

then at a church in town I beleive at the other end of the city on west rock rd the emts called off a St jeromes church minutes after all of the above for yet another true medical the fire dept was at.

the firefighters are averaging about 15 medical emergencies a day some are that much before lunchtime most are at medical offices on east ave.

I asked the Advocate and the Hour to publish the fire calls so we as a city know what the work load is ,,its all about fuel, personal, and truck use along with the fact another ambulance is probably needed,,I listen to cmed and trust me firehouse coffee must be served at all the stations.

I’m not taking a shot at the homeless shelter but they do generate at least 1 call a day and neon and the med offices on east ave each day during the week.So when you add them up its a busy day for the men who bust their nuts for the city,,

I came out in the beginning and defended the police and fire but in reality they don’t need defending the work they do the people they touch are sufficient for us rational people wonder where the council and city hall have been in noting this at the recent contract time,,

yes we now can see the boasting of what i did before the election but we know what the real deal is we are not stupid, I just wish the new mayor would take some interest in things we talk about on this site it may be a plus at election time,,we know the chamber is pleased and the Norwalk tree aliance on sept 27 at 5 at the Double tree hotel is hosting the mayor which by the way was absent may 5th when my kids learned to climb trees and come down like a firefighter from tall buildings..touting projects along with the DPW head is this just a coincidence

no I am cynical its election time and I trust the rose color glasses have been passed out,,

where the hell are the candidates? where are the issues the Advocate and the Hour has worked on so hard with stories ?

thank god for follow ups here on the blog, and the things we disect if not for this site we would all think we are far from disaster with some of our present leadership..

ok it was a rant ,,it was warranted

Mr Greenpeace thanks for your support of the fire dept they are very well trained and love helping the public because that what they live for and if anyone thinks there overpaid get a life!!

    Re “The Truth”

You are right on the money. I think there is a mis understanding just what the term “First Responder” entails. The last thing you may see is a Firefighter struggling to save your life. Chances are that because of him, you will live to see everything you love again.

First Responders in the US can perform a variety of medical techniques not available to First Aiders.

    Oxygen Therapy
    Childbirth
    Triage and Multiple Trauma
    Airway Management
    Moving Patients
Assisting Patients in using medications such as inhalers, epinephirine auto-injectors, nitroglycerin pills, etc.
    Transportation of Patients
    Assisting medical professionals

NFPA regulation 1006 and 1670 state that all “rescuers” must have medical training to perform any technical rescue operation, including cutting the vehicle itself during an extrication. Therefore, in most all rescue environments, whether it is an EMS Department or Fire Department that runs the rescue, the actual rescuers who cut the vehicle and run the extrication scene or perform any rescue such as rope, low angle, etc, are Medical First Responders, Emergency Medical Technicians, or Paramedics, as most every rescue has a patient involved.

The liberalization of sexuality kicked into high gear by the 1960s with the advent of the birth control pill, letting women get in on the fun and act on the basis of desire as men always had, according to Shorter.
