Norwalk: More Police Patrols in South Norwalk

Someone knows who carries guns and shoots them in Bryant park. Likely it is the drug guys who ply their trade from the park. After Sunday’s shooting, Police Chief Rilling has decided to step up the presence of police in the area. From the Advocate:

City and police officials yesterday promised added police action at the Washington Village public housing complex after a weekend shooting at nearby Ryan Park, when a bullet pierced a young girl’s bedroom window.

No one was injured in the Sunday evening incident, but the family has been moved from their ground-level unit at the complex, officials said.

The girl was in her room when the bullet cracked through the window and a blind, Police Chief Harry Rilling said yesterday. The shooting was reported to police at 10:06 p.m. Sunday.

Mayor Richard Moccia held a news conference yesterday with Norwalk Housing Authority Executive Director Curtis Law, Rilling and other high-ranking police officers, as well as Common Council members Phyllis Bolden and Carvin Hilliard, to discuss the shooting.

“We are not going to accept it,” Moccia said, as he asked the community for help in identifying those responsible for the shooting.

Rilling said the police department has done much through the years to help residents of Washington Village “live in peace.”

“There are people out there who know who did this and withholding names is irresponsible,” Rilling said.

The Police have an uphill battle on this one, they are not exactly the trusted by most who live in the drug war zone. Too many opportunities for intimidation will keep people quiet. Until that problem is solved, the other one won’t be.

The people in Washington Village and surrounding area need to come out in force against these people. Its time for a neighborhood watch and I don’t mean one where a couple of people take a quick trip around the block either. I mean a real neighborhood watch where police and citizens band together to provide a 24-7 watch. There are those who work nights and those who work days and with the help of the police and city officials a show of force on our streets can push these dealers and gun toting gangsters out of our town. Time to get our teens off the streets and time to get the gangs out of Norwalk.

  • 2 Wyatt Erp & Doc Holliday // Aug 14, 2007 at 9:29 am

This seems like it was a warning to the area residents, that “We can get to anyone”, by a gang.

If that many shots were fired with intent to kill, the police would have found at least one body. Not only that but the 2 handguns were found discarded nearby. This enforces the thought that they planned this as a “Fear Campaign.” The mistake they made was that a shot entered a child’s room, and thank god hit no one.

It is time that the residents and police produce a “Fear Campaign” of their own, one which will let these scum know that they are also on the thin edge of eternity, and had better get out of “Tombstone” while they can still do it in a vertical position.

Wyatt Erp & Doc Holliday-as i said above, this is the time that residents take back their neighborhood. This is no life for them. They have to stop being afraid and start opening up to the police about who these sleezebags are. They need to be gotten rid of and South Norwalk needs to unite against them. Not just South Norwalk but all residents should be lending a hand to rid our town of this element. We are coming into a time when so much is at stake, especially small childrens lives who just want to grow up without fear. It is no longer acceptable for anyone who knows who these people are to allow them to roam and terrorize our streets. I think a good t-shirt would be “The miserable 25 against crime in Norwalk!” Lets put a positive spin on what has become a focal point of many each and every day on this blog and get out there and sto the bullets and stop the drugs!

  • 4 anonymous // Aug 14, 2007 at 10:22 am

Ok. Someone shot a bunch of rounds in sono and no one got arrested. Woman assaulted taking out garbage in rowayton. There wasn’t a cop on that street when it happened. Guess it is time to start bashing the cops, the chief, the mayor, and corda again. Not sure what corda has to do with it, but I am sure he will get bashed anyway.

  • 5 Anonymous // Aug 14, 2007 at 10:26 am

#4- Nobody is bashing the Mayor, the cops, the chief or Corda(well maybe Corda, heck why not?) What we are saying is that residents need to team up with the police and city officials and get rid of this crap.

  • 6 anonymous // Aug 14, 2007 at 10:33 am

Not yet, but you know it’s coming.

  • 7 L'arlequino // Aug 14, 2007 at 10:43 am

Well, we certainly don’t want to hold the City accountable for our safety, do we?

  • 8 Mr Greenpeace // Aug 14, 2007 at 10:53 am

Last night at dusk I saw a man trimming a overgrown bush in front of an apartment in Washington village and thought that hasn’t been trimmed all summer. maybe its time to treat the place like someone does live there and not a project. maybe if we take away the some of the label that gives it a :found many more shell casings at the scene than usual” we would be maybe heading in the right direction.

There was in the last week someone suggesting I or we would not be happy if we didn’t pick up the paper and read this kind of news.It was stated last week things are quiet , it was said it was this time of year later in the summer going into fall like years past crime and incidents like sundays usually happen in years past including Halloween so what we have had already happen this year is showing a growing trend isn’t it?

I wrote during a segment of filming for the Segul movie on water st by the aquarium we all heard gunshots and the police station was swamped with calls,( somewhat comical to the dispatchers) wasn’t funny to those who know what gunshot sounds like but just the same its life here in South Norwlak, as when they used explosives on the high tension wire over the Norwalk river the conditioning of residents were to call the police for more gunshots so yes there are at times cooperation is given to the police.

Wasn’t it last week the Advocate wrote someone became a victim of an attempted car jacking , thwarted it himself actually recovered a gun from the perp before the police arrived,,that was community involvement at its best correct?

Lets give the officers some credit they were able to come into the area and work with the residents they did as an union not a city hold a very nice very well run event Matt Breslow from the Advocate reported on the day events, correct me if I’m wrong it was the officers and union that did a great thing for the residents. This is on the heels of this shooting so they were here making a presence.

Now we hear a presence is going to be made yes recruits are on there way and the talk has been since the last high profile crime in the area something has to be done, and frankly putting ones foot down in and around this section of town you must look for needles and broken glass so please anyone who is going to rescue us here in South Norwalk be careful.

There is pride in the Village and the Court and the Gardens with the parks basketball courts and the front of apartments the resident are responsive to where they live but when I see lack of maintenance overlooked trash on a friday so it cam rot all weekend and the condition of some of the buidings it does give the well it is a project what do you want stigma that makes me midserable knowing I have and my kids have friends who live there.

Then you see GE come in and do projects at the Homeless shelter and i think i would of joined them myself and helped no way do I take for granted activists, volunteers or city workers who try and make all of our housing more comfortable and livable for our residents.

So asking for the publics help is not a bad thing but in the next breathe lets praise the officers , GE just worked on the homeless shelter assisting the childrens quality of life and the countless faceless people who are there all the time working on the conditions making them better instead of grabbing front page saying help is on the way so isn’t Xmas and show the residents they have support.

When someone can call and tell the police how many shots what caliber and say it came from a clip from just sounds alone, or hear rounds bounce off the steel boat buildings on water street ,,going to the baseball game in Bridgeport and watching the first ball get thrown out would of been a blessing to most children living in the Village, Roodner court or Meadow gardens I’m glad Norwalk has so much culture but little class at times.(my opinion) I get to say that here on the blog.

My last volley,,run this by a therapist, go fix a window in a apartment complex where a childs room was hit by gunfire , have the window replaced but leave the broken blind behind ( good shot Advocate this picture tells yet another story) so all the children who we are trying to protect leaves physcological presense of the days events. don’t go find another new blind or even a used one from another source hell I would of gone home and given one for all that shows we need to improve the image of the rental apartments doesn’t it?

The ice cream truck comes through the area at night why doesn’t someone stop him a couple of blocks away for your own safety of course and donate a round for the kids to the non miserable who think I’m off my rocker its only a thought for those who would try and help from a distance and say what can I do?

I’m sure the 25 could think of better ways of helping,,I try and distance myself I don’t want to hurt anyones credibility or good name.

L’arlequino-May 2007-Increasing violence among teenagers and other youths appears to have contributed to a nationwide crime spike,FBI data from last fall show violent crimes, including murders and robberies, rose by 3.7% nationwide during the first six months of 2006. Those findings came on top of a 2.2% crime hike in 2005 — the first increase since 2001. That a growing number of offenders appear to be younger, and their crimes more violent, and that laws in some states provide few, if any, tough penalties on juvenile offenders.

    • Many youths have little parental oversight and are too easily influenced by gang membership and glamorized violence in popular culture.

    • Loosely organized gangs present the biggest concern for law enforcement officials because they are hard to investigate and their members often commit random acts of crime out of self-protection.

    • Offenses committed by people using firearms pose a major threat not only to communities, but also to police. So-called “straw purchases,” where gun owners buy their firearms through a go-between is an area of concern.

Perhaps this will give you some inclination of what our police dept and city officials are facing. There is no easy answer and concentration on gaining more police personnel is what most municipalities are looking at. Police and neighborhood crime watch organizations are pooling resources to put more presence in troubled areas as well as looking to the federal government for funds to help in these endevours. Why was Norwalk overlooked once again. Perhaps because we are not looked at as being high crime in some circles but whatever the reason our officials need to beat on as many doors in congress and and homeland security as they can in order to fund more police and more resources to get crime out of our neighborhoods. A slap on the hand of these offenders only serves as a temporary solution. What we need is money and more officers as well as cooperation from the residents.

  • 10 just a thought // Aug 14, 2007 at 11:30 am

Perhaps if the former mayor had chosen to acknowledge gangs versus cliques we would have been well on our way to curbing what has become an epidemic in this town. Is anyone aware of the age group where kids join gangs these days? Try 5th grade. This is when they are recruited. I’d like to know one thing, where the hell are their parents?

  • 11 Wyatt Erp & Doc Holliday // Aug 14, 2007 at 11:58 am

    Re post #3.

There is no doubt in our minds that UNLESS the residents of this area decide that they will help the police with any info that will lead to the arrest of these outlaws who insist in shooting it up their neighborhood like it was Tombstone or Dodge city, they will sooner or later pay with an innocent life. They must decide between the police or a life taken by a stray bullet. Foremost they must remember that “A BULLET HAS NO CONSCIOUS.” It will go where ever it is aimed, innocent people are not excluded.

The solution to these problems is in their hands. It is only up to them to use it.

    Let me add, the old saying;

“All that is needed for evil to triumph, is that good men do NOTHING.”

  • 13 Mr Greenpeace // Aug 14, 2007 at 12:13 pm

Saying is around here is better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

  • 14 Anonymous // Aug 14, 2007 at 12:36 pm

An innocent child almost died, I think its time for everyone to get involved!

  • 15 Wyatt Erp // Aug 14, 2007 at 2:01 pm

    Re post 13

These scum should understand that they might not get the choice to be “Judged by 12″

  • 16 Mr Greenpeace // Aug 14, 2007 at 3:47 pm

#15 so true Wyatt, and agree what you said in your posting #2 and #3 as well and you did put a positive spin yourself on things,,

    Mr Greenpeace

its not the time to bash, its time to react and heal and support our officers they are the first to respond and last to leave and most if not all are family men and woman themselves.

  • 17 rogue norwalker // Aug 14, 2007 at 4:23 pm

headline: Mayor and Chief and high ranking officers met to address the problem.
problem: 99% of these “high ranking” officers have been closet cops their whole careers and are clueless how to do real police work. I would trade the whole bunch for 1 real street cop.
solution: let’s promote them all to Deputy chiefs, pay them more money, that should solve the problem.

  • 18 anonymous // Aug 14, 2007 at 4:57 pm

    Aaaand they’re off.

  • 19 Mr Greenpeace // Aug 14, 2007 at 5:28 pm

your right posting number 6 or 18 but at least there some substance to the post and in all honesty makes some sense. I would encourage some input from you so I could understand another perspective,,I will always listen to another suggestion or thought ,,

so far that one made sense ever know a real street cop where everyone knows him?

  • 20 Roger McBride // Aug 14, 2007 at 8:19 pm

so far that one made sense ever know a real street cop where everyone knows him?

Yeah! around 1958 he had the foot beat in South Norwalk. Cannot remember his name, but if you got in trouble he knew who you were and would call your old man.

  • 21 Norwalk MADD Mother // Sep 2, 2007 at 10:26 am

I am a member of NOrwalk’s MADD and was deeply troubled by today’s story in the Norwalk Advocate. It looks like there should be an investigation of Norwalk Fire Lt. Eddie Prescott for his role in his sons drunk driving accident. “Respected” Lt. Prescott’s kid almost kills someone and blows a .18 while our crack police department issue him a speeding ticket and nothing else. How about arresting Lt. Prescott’s kid for the crime given the woman’s serious injury ? Did Lt. Eddie Prescott cover this up ? Or did the Norwalk Police Chief, Harry Rilling cover this up ? This looks like something that needs to be investigated. If Lt. Prescott of Chief Rilling had anything to do with this, they should resign. Or how about some accountability for why Lt. Prescott’s kid was not arrested. It seems as if the cops like covering up their and the fire departments drunk driving while others suffer and can possibly die from their acting above the law. This is not the first instance we have read about this year. As a member of MADD, these actions are terrible and unacceptable in Norwalk. We expect more from our “respected” public officials. If nothing is done about this, we will be organizing a protest march.

  • 22 anonymous // Sep 2, 2007 at 10:37 am

Maybe Chief Rilling can go to Weston. At least there he can get his brother in law hired.

  • 23 Outraged NFD member // Sep 2, 2007 at 1:11 pm

It figures, another firefighter scandal. Maybe Lt. Prescott should resign from the fire department. He is a disgrace to the uniform if this is true. I am a member of the NFD, and can tell you that many of us do not approve of this. He was the member of the NFD that went after Scott Wilson and stopped him from driving that precipitated the whole last big issue on the NFD. This should be investigated.

  • 24 Proud Norwalk Democrat // Sep 2, 2007 at 3:14 pm

Hey Republicans, does a cat have your tongue. How about standing up for Nikkie Kydes and Looie Eddie Prescott. The Norwalk Republicans should be ashamed of themselves for supporting the actions of people like Kydes and Prescott. The police department should immediately re-open the Prescott matter and arrest Lt. Prescott’s kid for what he did. Looks like Walter Briggs is looking a whole lot better today than the corrupt Norwalk Republicans.

  • 25 Proud Norwalk Democrat // Sep 2, 2007 at 9:43 pm

This whole new fire department thing involving Lt. Prescott’s son stinks ! Why aren’t the hardcore Republicans at least defending Lt. Eddie Prescott and his .18 son ? They know that this stinks !!!!!!

  • 26 Mr Greenpeace // Sep 2, 2007 at 10:51 pm

yes it does send a wrong message, but as I said in the past with our police the fire is the same way we have a lot of good guys they deserve our support.

It was nice to see Lisa Cooper and McCloud and Spencer there, but even more important Brown, Briggs and Geake Morris and Bolden yes its election time so what they went and took the time to listen observe deduct and hopefully respond to the needs and wants of the 1500 residents..if they don’t then they will never have my support again,,,

They all went today not for the flag waving crap we have seen so far by others they went and participated listened. Ok start throwing the stones monday lets give not only them but the residents some time to think about what we are doing about the issues at hand.

I’m not a big fan of either party but I do thank these people not candidates that attended today, its odd this whole thread is on police patrols in South Norwalk, the crime the things that keep happening but along side of the headlines we are still talking about trucks and what we are still spending in enforcement instead of crime prevention..

so if anyone see a peeper with a 18 wheel truck overloaded going over the bridge without a plate call the police otherwise lets focus on the crime in South Norwalk.

a lull before the storm I think,,its been way to quiet only minor crimes each day tells me we are due…

to the Norwalk firefighter there is a thread out here praising the fire dept ,,it got buried but not forgotten I’ll bring it back the 11th maybe you guys can add to it, thank all your brothers , your one helluva fire dept.

  • 27 Mr Greenpeace // Sep 2, 2007 at 10:54 pm

I’m sorry my thanks was to the people who celebrated the family at Rooder court today in my above rant, The Hour ran a nice story on the day in Mondays paper.

  • 28 anonymous // Sep 3, 2007 at 8:07 am

Sorry, but why would Lt Prescott resign because the cops didn’t arrest his son. Don’t know all the xircumstances, but sounds like it is between the cop and his kid. Maybe if you provide some details as to why he wasn’t arrested …

  • 29 Anonymous // Sep 3, 2007 at 8:33 am

Mr. Greenpeace and others. Not every elected official can go to every event. There are way too many in this town to be at every one and sometimes they don’t know about them. There are some officials who go to just about everything and there are those who might try to make at least one or two. In response to #24-perhaps the old saying “actions speak louder than words” will give you an idea why the Republicans are not vocal about these issues. Perhaps they are silenced because they know that what is being said is true and agree with what is being said and hope that enough people will be smart enough to really look at these people and make the right choice when going to the polls in November. I don’t necessarily agree with this stance and they should come forward and let it be known that they disagree with what is happening but if you ever go to any meetings you would surely get an earful of what they really think of Mr. Kydes attitude and I am sure they have lots of questions with regards to Lt. Prescott’s situation. Right now thought I think that one should be in the hands of the police and courts. From reading the article in the paper it seems something is rotten in Denmark and apparently the atty in the case made way too many blunders.

Back to Roodner Court: if anybody’s interested, there are 29 pictures — including some of the incredible Amanda Brown playing an aggressive game of basketball — my wonderful wife took in the “Campaign Photos” section of my website. Just click my name, below.

And thank you again to the folks at Roodner Court who made us feel like family.
