Norwalk: Con man Vs. Con man

If I were a betting person, and I am, I’d say the odds favored Superintendent “con man” Corda on this showdown and the diversity corral. His opponent is the ever omniscient, except when it comes to actually doing his job, con man Bruce Morris. At issue:

When recent principalship positions were filled at Norwalk High School and Brien McMahon High School, the board allowed for Superintendent Salvatore Corda to bypass the process, in order to hire principals more quickly, Board of Education members said.

Board member Bruce Kimmel said the change was made to allow Corda more influence early on in the hiring process.

“They didn’t want candidates to be nixed by low level committees, organizations, and parents without a higher level (official looking at it),” he said.
Whether or not the temporary change will become permanent will likely be debated this month by the Minority Recruitment Task Force, which will then make a recommendation to the Board of Education.

According to a July board packet, the plan was to be reviewed by June 30, but housemaster vacancies slowed proceedings.

The city’s human relations officer, State Rep. Bruce Morris, D-140, is slated to convene the task force — made up of educators, administrators and community representatives — to consider plan changes this month, according to the packet.

“I don’t know what will come of it,” Board Chairwoman Jody Bishop-Pullan said. “That’s for the committee to decide and present to the board.”

An administrative assistant at Morris’s office said he was on vacation and could not be reached for comment.

Bruce Le Vine Mellion, a task force committee member and President of Norwalk Federation of Teachers, said he felt Corda and the board “unilaterally changed” the diversity plan, without consulting the committee.

“I think it was arrogant on the part of Corda, recommending adjustments to be made,” he said, calling the effort “discourteous” to those who worked on the task force.

Though an August meeting is noted in the board packet, Mellion said he hasn’t been notified of any new efforts to meet.

“I haven’t gotten one word about anything we’re going to do or anywhere we’re going to go with it,” he said.

Corda said Morris is working to replace task force members who have retired since the group last convened “years ago.”

So, we have Corda decreeing a bypass of something, check, and Bruce Morris in charge of a committee that hasn’t met in months, check, and no one is telling anyone what is going on, check, why its business as usual for the Norwalk Public Schools.

Ya know, this smells of careful orchestration. Something to do with, hrrmmm, maybe demonstrating that Bruce Morris is actually doing something? Well, this sure is a funny way of doing that. Will the BOE get bamboozled by the Corda/Morris dog and pony show? Stay tuned ….

Didn’t you just love the Asimov quote that Mike Lyons used?

“Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.”

With that in mind, I’d envision:

Corda: Darn it! We pay you so you should do SOMETHING for the school district.

    Morris: Okay! I’ll do SOMETHING!

They certainly hope we don’t notice these things don’t they.

I think the change is so that Corda doesnt have to answer tp parents, staff, and public over his selection of golf buddies in NY for jobs.

Corda and Morris had NOTHING to do with finding the principal at BMHS. She is a former parent and was waiting in the wings. She is terrific and Morris and Corda can’t take credit for her! Morris does nothing for us and puts really fine teachers on the defensive. I can’t speak here freely. If I could I would go off on the lack of professionalism.

BOE members, don’t you become concerned when you read postings like those of Aunt Bertha? Can’t you see that we have a superintendent who is a serious problem for this community? We also have a problem assistant superintendent and a problem Chief Operating Officer and a problem …. (Just fill in the blanks.)

(Note to Aunt Bertha: You wouldn’t be unprofessional for saying what you think about Bruce Morris, but I understand your concern about being an employee who has negative comments to make about the upper levels of administration — or any level of administration, I suppose. I understand all of that first hand.)

Recently, with the new hires, Corda and company have tried to take over the process by browbeating teachers and parents during the sessions to determine who will go forward. King Corda wants total control over the process; this approach ensures that he will be able to continue to hire fellow carpetbaggers from New York. The lastest is the new principal at NHS. They both pretended not to know one another during the hiring process, but guess what???? There have been at least three recent golf outings to date. One on company time-the others, who knows. No wonder the district ends up with loser administrators. On another topic, the board met behind closed doors oin Tuesday to hammer out another wonderous policy. The contents of which will not be released until next week. I wonder what they have created. I hope it is not as bad as the debacle drafted recently concerning homework and testing. The antics of central office is the best soap opera in town.

Slayer, you said, “Corda and company have tried to take over the process by browbeating teachers and parents during the sessions to determine who will go forward. King Corda wants total control over the process. . ..”

Let no one forget that he even hired his friend, the retired superintendent from New York (a man who knows absolutely nothing about NHS and BMHS) to do all of the screenings. This man had tremendous power because he determined which candidates the teachers, parents, administrators and students would interview. How could he know which candidates would be good for schools if he knows nothing about the schools? This man was paid (note that I didn’t say that he earned it) close to $20,000 per school for his “nationwide” search that produced finalists who all live within short driving distance of Norwalk.

Aunt Bertha made some positive comments about the new BMHS principal, and I have heard similar things about her. Let’s hope that both principals will be supported by the royal court.

#6 it is probably an acceptance of everything and anything that Morris does and one which will allow his non credentials to be overlooked because of his service to Norwalk and his on the job training. More BS

Aunt Bertha is right about the new Principal at BMHS. She is top quality and BMHS is lucky to have her. As for the new housemasters, they have two new people one comes with strange background items, The other seems to be cool. The other two were filling in last year and did a GREAT job! I hope it all works out we will miss JRod and Donna Vac. There were two men in house that should have been considered for the housemaster positions that were not…could it be they were not going to be ruled over? I don’t know for sure but I hope we don’t lose them to another system. Silence Dogood Keep rocking with the input you’re awesome!
