Bridge Collapse in Minnesota Reminds of CT DOT Errant Decisions

The fatal bridge collapse in Minneapolis/St. Paul is a gripping reminder that aging infrastrucutre can cost lives. The bridge was under repair at the time of the collapse, but not to repair the fatigue noted in a 2001 report.
A 2001 evaluation of the bridge, prepared for the state transportation department by the University of Minnesota Civil Engineering Department, reported that there were preliminary signs of fatigue on the steel truss section under the roadway but no cracking.It said there was no need for the transportation department to replace the bridge because of fatigue cracking.

Cappiello Calls For DeLuca To Resign

With the September 18th date looming on the horizon, and the newly formed senate committee to investigate State Senator DeLuca, the pieces are moving into place for DeLuca’s resignation. From the Courant:
The first Republican senator called Wednesday for the resignation of Sen. Louis C. DeLuca, only hours after top senators announced the formation of a special committee to investigate DeLuca’s guilty plea for conspiring to threaten his granddaughter’s husband.
Sen. David Cappiello, of Danbury, who has known DeLuca for 15 years, said calling for the resignation of the former top GOP leader was difficult.

Norwalk: Sunday Concerts at Cranbury Park

This Sunday kicks off the Sunday series of jazz and classical concerts at Cranbury park. From the Hour:
“This concert series at Cranbury Park is an attempt to expand on the concert series that (the parks department) does at Calf Pasture,” said Becki Christopherson, chairwoman of the Norwalk Advisory Commission on the Arts and Culture. “We are very excited about this opportunity to highlight our local talent! We have some amazing musicians participating, and these free concerts will be a fabulous way to spend a summer Sunday afternoon.”
