Norwalk: Dems Ready District E Candidates

July 23rd, 2007 · 45 Comments

Norwalk District E Democrats have announced their slate of candidates. They seek to return Gwen Briggs and Bill Krummel as the district candidates and chose Ned Lamont’s chauffeur Marc Bradley as the at large candidate. I’m not understanding the heavy promotion of the Ned Lamont chauffeur link, but I guess the District E Dems see any link to Ned Lamont as a “powerful” zen like election mojo. It worked so well for them in Norwalk last year.

Norwalk: Squabbles Over Vets Park

July 23rd, 2007 · 15 Comments

More squabbles over whether Vets park needs an Amphitheater or not. The Advocate is highlighting the war of words between Democrat Fred Bondi, District C and Democratic candidate Laurel Lindstrom who is running for a District C seat. Other District C reps Joanne Romano and Nick Kydes are not quoted in the Advocate article, so we are left to speculate on their thoughts on Vets park. You can be sure that District C will be the hot bed of campaigning this fall. Back to the story:

As proponents of the Veterans Memorial Park amphitheater look to keep the project rolling at tomorrow’s Common Council meeting, an opponent of the plan is still wary.

Darien and Fairfield No Happy ABout DOT Rest Stop Proposal

July 23rd, 2007 · 1 Comment

Does this surprise anyone?

Darien and Fairfield officials object to a preliminary draft of a state Department of Transportation study on improving highway rest stops and increasing truck parking.

Recommended improvements include an overhaul of the rest areas that would feature more truck parking, better concessions and more informative tourism centers.

Enacting all the recommendations could cost $400 million to $500 million, DOT officials have said.

Fairfield officials said there is no need to spend so much money on the rest areas.

Child Porn Computer Case To Start Friday

July 23rd, 2007 · No Comments

The test of whether a provision of the Sarbanes-Oxley law can be used to prosecute sex crimes is set to begin Friday in Bridgeport. This is a big deal, because if the prosecution of criminal defense attorney Philip Russell is successful, it will for the first time introduce the concept that attorney’s can be prosecuted for actions that occur before an investigation has started. The implications are far reaching, which is why the Connecticut Criminal Defense Lawyers Association has filed a brief in this. While criminal defense attorney’s are more acutely aware of the implications, non criminal attorney’s should be wary too.

Norwalk: Stealing Electricity

July 23rd, 2007 · No Comments

Each day brings reminders that we are not that far off from the apocalyptic future envisioned by sci fi writers once the oil has run out. The Hour reports:

Steal electricity by bypassing your electric meter box — or some other deft maneuver — and you’re risking arrest or electrocution.

That’s the message being sent by the 3rd Taxing District Electric Co., which pressed charges against an East Norwalk man, who allegedly did just that — bypass his electric meter — at a Sycamore Street address earlier this month.

Sunday Driving Open Thread

July 22nd, 2007 · 9 Comments

Nothing can be finer than to be leaving Carolina in the morning, so today you get an open thread. Was the haitain festival an 80db or less music fest? If the parking is on Haviland street, in the maritime garage, and in the Webster st. parking lot, then how was it that the DPW work on Washington street caused so much consternation? Were pedestrians impeded? That being said, what happened to communication here. A notice emailed to merchants, or a flyer could have alerted all to the fact that the street was going to be dug up and repaved.

Norwalk: Rowayton Historical Society Holds Event For Farm Creek

July 21st, 2007 · No Comments

The Rowayton Historical Society is holding a wine and cheese reception to celebrate and plaque the 100-year old Stone Barn. The event is on Sunday, July 22nd, 5:00-7:00pm on the deck overlooking Farm Creek at 34 Sammis Street, Rowayton.

About Farm Creek

Our Last Chance to Preserve Farm Creek…

Quickly, quietly and before our very eyes, Rowayton, as we know it, is disappearing. Open space is being replaced by one house built after another. As a result fewer birds, fish, crabs, and marsh animals are breeding here. We are covering their homes with ours. But we now have an opportunity to make sure that a major section of Farm Creek, our calm, water-ringed oasis of undeveloped semi-wild nature, does not disappear. The Campaign for Farm Creek Preserve, initiated by the Norwalk Land Trust, is under way to protect sixteen acres right in the heart of Rowayton.

Shays: Joins Cynthia McKinney in Capitol Police Altercation

July 21st, 2007 · 5 Comments

Chris Shays has joined ranks with former Congresscritter Cynthia McKinney in an incident with Capitol police. Unlike McKinney’s incident there was no punching, although Shays is alleged to have “touched” the officer’s name tag. From the Courant:

After a profanity-laced altercation with a Capitol police officer - during which he reached to touch the officer’s nametag - U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays Friday apologized Friday for acting “in a way I know was not appropriate.”

The 4th District Republican said in a statement, ” I take full responsibility for this incident and want to ensure it does not reflect negatively on the officer in any way.” Capitol police did not respond to requests for comment.
