Open Thread Monday

I’m not sure if I read this right, but the Advocate seems to indicate that the master plan will be voted on and it somehow includes something to do with childhood obesity. Here’s something to chew on, obesity can be explained by simple science– too many calories consumer plus not enough calories burned. I sincerely doubt that the plan is going to recommend the elimination of stupidity, but who knows. We don’t, because the draft that they are voting on at a special meeting tomorrow night is not on the city web site. For that matter the Redevelopment committees minutes aren’t there either. All this and more in the comments.

Here’s a link to a national map indicating changing rates of obesity by state:

    http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/fit.nation/obesity.map/

While most other states’ rates of obesity (# of people weighing in as obese per 100 population), CT’s rate is one that has stayed fairly flat. Why? Maybe the state should be looking at the reasons for this (ruchest, thinnest and smartest?)and the city should be sticking to a Master Plan of Conservation and Development; what do we want to keep and what do we want to develop?

I saw that map earlier today. Confirms my observation that every time I travel south I see more fat people. Is it the Moon Pies? Frito Pies? Mountain Dew?

Heh. It looks like all the obese people just slide down to the lowest middle point. But I bet it has to do more with needing a car, year round AC and non walkable lifestyles.

Interesting article on the relationship between socioeconomic status and obesity at http://dir.salon.com/story/books/review/2003/01/09/fat/index.html

Hooray! Those stupid old dependable, unhackable mechanical voting machines have finally been outlawed! Three cheers for the triumph of technology!

Lost power for several hours last night. CL&P said it was an underground transformer on Strawberry Hill. However, there were no CL&P crews to be seen anywhere in the vicinity of Strawberry Hill. Could it have been due to the work being done on Westport Avenue?
