Looks like three people had a very bad day. A routine burglary investigation on AIken street led to a drug bust. THe drug bust led to a fire. The details outlined in The Hour:

The events began in the morning when Detective Eileen Northcott arrived at 4 Aiken St. to investigate a “tip” on a house burglary that occurred elsewhere.

Northcott said she was permitted to enter the house and saw drugs “in plain sight.”

Northcott said she called the Special Services Division, whose officers handle vice crimes, and the three people on the first floor of the house —Zachary Zamfino, Heather Kruger and Matt Gabrielson — were arrested.

A tenant who lives on the house’s second floor, Corrie Todd, said she smelled smoke Wednesday afternoon and called 911. She then fled the house with her dog, Sasha.

The Fire Department was notified of the fire at 4:46 p.m.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to a room on the first floor in front of the house. The furnishings in the room were charred and smoke spread throughout the first floor.

Todd said some smoke entered her apartment, but she believed she could continue to live there. However, the Fire Department had the house’s gas and electricity turned off, and Todd was told she would have stay somewhere else at least for one night.

Todd said she believed Kruger was renting the first floor of the house.

A woman at the scene of the fire who said she is Zamfino’s mother said he was sub-leasing the room that burned from Kruger.

The woman said 11 cats, two snakes and an iguana lived in the house.

She said she thought the fire was caused by a heat lamp for the snakes or the iguana being tipped over by police while they were searching the house.

Randall said five of the cats were taken away by the city’s animal control warden while police were at the house in the morning.

Northcott said she called the warden because the cats appeared to be in poor health. She said she thought seven cats were removed by the warden.

Firefighters found a dead cat in the house. Another cat was captured by bystanders at the scene, and firefighters said several cats were running around in the backyard.

The woman said she believed the snakes and iguana were dead.

What better anti drug message than this one.

just for the record I learned more from the Advocate on this news item,, still waiting for the news outlet to report on the stabbing in Norwalk last week,,by the standards set by the newspapers they are now reporting news a couple of days old in line with press releases why is that?

Just curious did the stabbing victim recieve an arrest like the electrician who almost died form injuries on drugs working for the schools? I’m not saying the police was wrong all I’m saying is what was the news?

I suggested having both the police blotter, court news and fire dept call log published each day showing the need for more personal, equipment use and sometimes shortages in emergency response techs. In no way is this is critical of our professionals , it does ask if the dept heads are ready to ask for more help before the city grows much more..

This hype of potholes street conditions and city hall organization that has isolated the public and given the impression all is better that two years ago leaves a lot of questions..

Its so easy to sidestep the Brownfield report, the old police station report, the two landfills, the condition of the storm drain maintenance, the plans to enhance the parks, until after election,

the article was written about dredging the harbour, but no real reporting was done on the condition of soil that I assume was tested last time they worked in the river. The engineers just released a press release on projects years old showing continued problems where remediation was considered done and the public had no worries in other parts of the country.

Maybe its time we simply ask for some clarification on some facts about our harbour and a full disclosure on facts left out of reports,

I’m curious with all the barge traffic on the river where is the spill trailor housed for a spill that could devastate the river beaches and property if not contained asap,,of course I,m not ever thinking of what could happen at the power plant,,those emergency plans must be on file at city hall?

don’t plan on the obvious, just plan on telling everyone how good of a job has been done so we can drive the city further into the contaminated ground..

not for nothing but I didn’t really get the impression we caught Bonnie and Clyde or broke a cartel good work just the same by our officer , we simply caught normal crime, traffic stops are noted as being a number one crime prevention in the top 3 cities in Ct..in the month of June..too bad we didn’t have those numbers as well for Norwalk

a real crime is what the city is doing to the merchants in downtown SoNo,,guess they will do anything to grab headlines when the project is done for the election,,while the vendors on the street use the last couple of weeks of summer to generate rent for the winter,,I’m sorry but this blocking of a lane shows simple ingnorance on the DPW’s part,,your doing a great job Mr mayor, come on down and save the day or is it votes,,we will see an appearance soon pictures and all,,what a scam ,,anyone that use to work a crowd can tell you this is what its going to be like for the next couple of months..what ever happened to night work after midnight, more gets done and the whole street can be closed ,,what a joke
