Thanks to Turfie for posting this. When the original debate came up on this blog, I did a search online and found a design firm that provided unbiased critiques of logos and asked them to critique this one.

So for those of you who are wondering where this came from, that’s where. Turfie was open to providing a look at it to help answer questions about the logo’s inherent worth.

Top of the mornin to ya, Turfie!

Ouch and double ouch! So it’s back to the drawing board for the impressive Norwalk logo, is it? Someone better let the powers that be in on this. Of course, as Anonymous sez, this blog is a regular read by the key players, so the message will most likely be forwarded to the appropriate destination.

Turf, can we give credit where it’s due? I believe it was one of your regular posters who sent the logo on to a logo-design company online for analysis. My memory fails me. Who was it who sent this on? Maybe a link back to where that original was would help.

Thanks for taking the initiative, whoever you were!

Ah, Anonymous. Thanks for your post. You were typing as I was typing apparently. I think Turf should provide a footnote about your ownership in this, but of course..there are many Anonymouses! This feedback puts an end to the subjectivity and descriptors like “butt-ugly.” With this professional analysis, I believe they are suggesting the logo IS “butt-ugly” but.. in so many words.

    Thanks again!

watchdog: good morning to you too. The poster did not want to be identified. So one of the regular Anonymice, or maybe not, since so many use Anonymous its hard to keep track. The original thread is here though for reference to what was said before.

Hi, Watchdog - I appreciate the interest but I want to make sure that I am not accused of a conflict of interest myself nor any political agenda, so I would rather remain anonymous. I just want to provide some unbiased feedback…

Still looks butt-ugly to me, this critique just confirms it. Sometimes your gut reaction is the most accurate one.

  • 7 Anonymous // Jul 2, 2007 at 11:44 am

The Norwalk logo has been posted with other logos for comparison at http://www.code-interactive.com/archive/logo/critique.html

The logos are organized by rating 10/10, 9/10 and so on.. . just scroll to the 4/10 listings and click on “Norwalk”

The LOGO is forgettable, instead of the word unique used over and over try blah.

  • 9 Anonymous // Jul 2, 2007 at 2:57 pm

A logo,it boggles the mind. We have health care criis, men and women dying in Iraq, A campaign for the leadership of a city and all you people have is time to critsize a logo, which given any artistic endeavor, half the people like and the other do not. By the way for a critic of the design, I thought their letter head was rather bland. As I have said in the past, please you 25 people who hate this Mayor and city, get a life.

  • 10 Anonymous // Jul 2, 2007 at 3:03 pm

If the “leadership” of this city is going to project an image that reflects that concept, then they damn well better choose an image that projects it. This one does not.

Companies spend billions on their images and this mayor gets a hand-me-down freebie from someone trying to get their foot in the door of the City. The client here has gotten what they paid for.

  • 11 Anonymous // Jul 2, 2007 at 3:32 pm

Number 10, you prove my point, the company if you would would brother to check has numerous big name clients and so does not need a foot in the door, yes they are a business trying to succeed, who by the way is an active member of Chamber trying to advance Norwalk as a city. Oh by the way those companies that spend billions on their image they ahve all been sucessful right? there are numerpous books written outlining the failure of big corporations from image to slogans. I guess they make mistakes too, but at a much more money then the city spent. You know what, just do not look at it anymore. Oh by the way based on my count, I will stay by my comments about the same 25 purveyors of gloom and doom. There was a movie called the Dirty Dozen, we have Miserable 25. OK start the barrage, but no matter what you say it is still very eveident, nothing will make you happy, short of Norwalk closing down and everyone leaving. I will say it again it is only a logo, the fate of mankind will not be decided by the choice made. Get a ife, or we could use the logo 65%.

I have a better idea: why don’t you and all the Moccia supporters move to Bridgeport, that’s more your speed anyway. Then the rest of us can get on with catching up to Darien, Westport and New Canaan.

    Heavens to Betsy!

Where did you ever get the idea from this thread that 25 people “hate” the mayor and the city of Norwalk?

  • 14 Anonymous // Jul 2, 2007 at 3:48 pm

Hmm. Must be the same 25 people that are claimed to be the only ones who support historic preservation here. Categorizing people like that is a handy way of attempting to render them powerless.

I’ll chip in my two cents. This was not a rebranding exrcise but acceptance of a freebie. I would encourage city elders to think about branding, not just from a logo standpoint, but from a marketing standpoint. We compete against Stamford, Hartford, Danbury, New Haven, Bridgeport and Westchester County.

  • 16 Advertising Pro // Jul 2, 2007 at 4:07 pm

From my perspective, as I said previously, the client gets what they deserve. In this instance it is clear that the branding of Norwalk is seen as little more than a commodity to be had from the most expedient source. In this case, that which cost nothing. The old saying “garbage in, garbage out” applies here.

If Norwalk really wanted to compete with the surrounding towns, it would hire a professional to execute the branding strategy. Of course, when procurement is based on RFPs and bottom lines, they may get little more than what is shown here.

I like the main lettering and the goofy swashes– the rising paint smear, not so much.

Without the paint-y part, it makes me think “NORWALK: POLYESTER CITY.”

  • 18 Anonymous // Jul 3, 2007 at 7:22 am

Here’s a slogan they could use: “Norwalk: Our Logo Could Suck Harder but Then We’d Have to Ask for Another Freebie.”

  • 19 History Starts with Me! // Dec 26, 2007 at 1:36 pm

The Logo for Norwalk should be:

Norwalk: If it’s Historic, we’ll tear it down!
