The peoples republic of Rowayton has been on record of demanding that trucks be barred from snaking along route 136, which runs through the heart of Rowayton. They claim, or at least according to the Adovcate, Darien First Selectwoman Evonne Klein, RTM rep Callie Sullivan, and head of Stop Thru Tucks Andrew Glazer. Why is it that we don’t hear complaints from the other side of MLK drive? You know, the place where there are also houses close to the road, narrow turns like Woodward to Burritt?
Route 136 is a state highway.

The technology gods have conspired to afflict The Hour’s web site again with no updates. Not that the Advocate has much going on it site. Much ado about graduation, but the Courant is talking about the numerous political contributions that mob-like substance trash hauler James Galante provided.
Galante’s companies and at least two of his employees, and persons related to or living with them, donated about $10,000 to DeLuca’s Senate campaign and to a DeLuca-allied political action committee from 2002 to 2004, campaign finance records show. Two of those employees have already pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy charges and are awaiting sentencing.

The Advocate reports that despite numerous bills introduced by legislatures not a single one made it to the for for a vote. Why? Because these politicians thought it was all about protecting free speech. Here’s some news for all legislators. If you have a cell phone as your primary phone number, that incoming all is not free, you are paying for it. And the constant stream of robo-calls aren’t just political, there are calls to get a business loan, refinance a mortgage, surveys, satellite tv and a various other sales pitches that all don’t have any human attached to them, and thus no easy way to inform the caller to take the number off the list.

Frend Bondi survived the threat of not getting a nomination out of his district, but he will be the at-large candidate. As expected Kevin Poruban and Laurel Lindstrom are the in district candidates. There were no other names put forward, and 13 people were at the meeting, although 1 person was new and only at their first meeting.
The Republican candidates will be going through a similar process to nominate their candidates from District C, and I’ll post that info as soon as I’ve confirmed it. In the running at David Park, and incumbents Joanne Romano (at large) and Nick Kydes.

It’s hard to believe that public officials would make a decision on legislation based on a whisper campaign by a handful of Quinipiac professors who were hired by the American Petroleum Industry, but that is apparently what happened. Fortunately State Rep William Tong-D Stamford is hoping mad about it. And so should we the people.
Closer to home we have the likes of Rick Fuller on the BOE repeatedly intoning the “Trust the professionals” line when it came to asking questions of the Dr. Evil Sal Corda and Stuart Opdahl’s faith based budget. If we wanted a rubber stamp as an official we could dispense with elections and trot on over to Staples, click the easy button and get a real one, made in china, for $1.59. But I digress.

Is Norwalk the birthplace of the UNIVAC?
From The Writer’s Almanac for June 13th:
“It was on this day in 1951 that the world’s first commercially produced electronic digital computer was unveiled, known as the UNIVAC. It weighed eight tons, used 5,000 vacuum tubes and cost a quarter-million dollars. But it could perform a thousand calculations per second, the fastest rate in the world at the time. The first one was bought by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Courant reports his statement. “I promised from the beginning that I would not allow the mistake that I made interfere with my public office. By stepping down today, I am making sure that my personal issue does not overshadow all of the good work we’ve done and will do as a caucus.”
Ummm … his personal issue? Look, as a politician in a legislature he is supposed to make laws not break laws. The fact that he didn’t bother to report a bribe, where he allegedly said he was “afraid of them guys & tracing things.” Hardly the ringing flat refusal it should have garnered.

I guess I’m still bothered by Sal Corda’s persistence in blaming the community, the common council, and any one else for not “understanding” his budget. He must have thought he was being clever when he pointed out, during the BOE finance committee meeting that the “public” was not there in great numbers. All I could think was that he was as masterful as Dr. Evil in his island hideout bemoaning the fact that only his henchmen were there.
