Shakespeare on the Sound is till showing A Comedy of Errors at Pinkney park. A $35k grant is fueling a crackdown on speeders in Norwalk, so don’t drive too fast. The International Festival of Arts and Ideas is still going on in New Haven. Ayden’s closet is having a tent sale on Water street in SoNo. Feel free to discuss anything in the comments, but it might be just too beautiful a day to sit in front of the computer today. Enjoy the day.

Crackdown on all red light and stop sign scofflaws and cell phone use, speeders was only a fraction of the laws broken last year correct? or incorrect?
I trust where the money is used for overtime pay, which is what the news reported would not be the only incentive to continue such stops during regular shifts after this week.
Does this mean we will see the same enforcement monday morning at 8 AM when cars speed and go thru stop signs on Woodward ave and Meadow st.
I would of suggested doing this at the bus stops last week where we parents saw these infractions all school year.
Sunday patrol simply at some of the areas that have been targeted would of served a better purpose on monday morning or friday afternoon is Sunday considered overtime?
The figure for last year was 320 citations from june 26 to july 2 what was the figure for the rest of the year..it would of been a nice temptlate for comparison of our enforcemnt on this particular subject.
I never saw those deatils or if I missed them can anyone supply them? Were they in the grant application or do they keep them at the court house..out of all the citations what was enforceable or did that create any defaults on defendants, were all the citations acted upon with results..and final disposition..one might need a jurist number to figure this out,,
I like facts but the questions have to do for now..

Turf… you’re right. Whatta day! Still, how could one not grab a chance to stop by and read Mr. Greenpeace and his daily rant? I say this with the utmost respect and fondness for Mr. GP, as I’m sure he’s well aware. Mr. Greenpeace, I agree… we are short on nonpolitical issues, are we not? Somehow politics always seems to take priority. I admire your sincere efforts to expose speeding and crime as two very important concerns that afflict our beloved community. But, wait… did you mention cell phones? If I may speak honestly, speeding is not something that irks me half as much as cell phone misuse. Even with a law in place, the use of handheld cell phones while driving continues. Quite frequently, we still see cell phone law scoffers make that slooooooow one-handed turn onto a side street or have that distinctive delayed response at a four way intersection. Of course, it is questionable as to which is now worse: the problem or its solution. Currently, we are subjected to a rash of individuals who sport the earpiece in store aisles discussing a business merger or recipe ingredients over a cell phone. Earpiece or not, the use of cell phones in public places should be outlawed. It is absolutely criminal to have to listen to anyone’s private conversation while dining in a restaurant, waiting in line at the local pharmacy, or visiting a public restroom. If I could find a candidate willing to take on the platform of no cell phones in public places, he/she’s got my vote!

Hey, Mr. GP - Why not invite the Guardian Angels down to South Norwalk like they’re doing up in New Haven?
As far as cell phone usage goes, I have to admit that every once in a while, I too am guilty of driving without the hands-free.
When I see some clueless yuck sporting a bluetooth handset I figure that’s punishment enough but when they open their mouths, I agree with Watchdog. I want one of those illegal cell phone jammers you can buy on the internets…

Watchdog: Having just driven down from upstate, cell phone in hand, I have to say that I take the opposite tack on this issue. Reckless driving does not need a prop to occur these days. Some people just flat out can’t drive and in turfworld they would be banned until many driving lessons happened. I have many pet peeves, often involving short people who can’t see past the steering wheel who drive these huge SUVs. They can’t make turns in their own lanes because they can’t see the lanes. And car makers only encourage this by adding sensors to the reverse gear. I’m convinced that people don’t remember the stop sign rule. (Let the car to your right go if you arrive simultaneously.) And my biggest pet peeve, the people who slip into the correct car length space between cars, only to slam on their breaks because they are now too close to the car ahead.

watchdo, if yo can find one politician that has not, at one time or other used their cell phone while driving we could all vote for him/her.

evening, I guess i have yet one more question for the day,,while slow down days are playing out in the tiny hamlet of Norwalk,an accident with injuries like the one on Woodward ave and Meadow st sunday night 9:30 could it bring a xtra patrol under the grant given monday morning? (I also suggested enforcement then at that location)
Who would of ever thought after writing about the dangerous intersection of Woodward and Meadow there would be a very serious accident tonight sending at least one victim that was found in the street as engine five responded to the scene..There was at least 25 emergency workers at the scene.
I wish the person who found my style of reporting filled with false statements would come out of their safe cave and see the the advance notice of the dangers of that intersection in South Norwalk above at 4:07 pm .I realize I didn’t predict the time tonight so that in itself will hurt my credibility just the same.
To Watchdog,L’arlequino,Turfgrll, others and the news rooms who read this blog I thank you all for listening to my rants I know I sound like a skip on a broken record.
I’m sure the Advocate will be disapointed the news was not first on thier web site in the morning it was here on Ct largest Web guide. Car accident on Woodward ave sunday night sending at least one to the hospital.
Now its up to the Hour and Advocate to tell us the story but with it being Sunday night I’m sure the story of what actually happened will not be reported in detail in monday’s paper,,monday’s stories have probably been written sat they go to print soon,,I enjoy tweaking the papers…

Mr. Greenpeace, what happened? we know there was an accident but can you give more detail? This is not a laughing matter and anyone who makes stupid remarks is dead wrong! Were there any children involved, hopefully not. Was it speeding? It sounds like a pretty bad accident if there were that many rescue workers.
-
Whoa, Turf…I passionately disagree with you on this one! I am okay with a hands-free while driving, but not with phone in hand. I strongly feel it throws off one’s equilibirium when sound waves are concentrated in one ear. As much as we think we can multi-task, the question is.. can we multitask well enough to preserve the sharpest of reactions necessary for driving a multi-ton killing machine. I’ve seen too many people lag in decision making while driving with a phone held to their ear. Circumstance? I think not.

To posting number 7
I don’t know details I was not home to see any of it but know from accounts there was a serious accident..this is the part of Woodward ave this year alone have had actuall rollovers and ect with large amounts of personal damage to homes and brick walls. This street is not new to severe auto accidents.I was also told by good sources the impact was enough to create a gas spill so that may idicate speed was involved.Another point was made it was only 25 feet from the last accident that sents three people to the hospital a less than two months ago, speed was the factor on that one.
I get local news from norwalk.news@yahoo.com something we started about a year ago to local residents fed up with politics and jaw talk from the public safety depts here in Norwalk.More than one person can access it so no one person owns it or can be harrassed by passing on good info in the name safety to news outlets ..There are many ways to take back this city this blog has been the one of the best resources.
residents saw cruisers in the area doing their slow down day only drawback was they also noticed there was no cars trafiic was minimal and if they were watching for cell phone seat belts or drinking they had to have had a telescope from where they sat all day in South Norwalk. The fact was there was no traffic until later in the day.
I did mention a new program started by the Boston police on one of its kind in the country are using cell phone tips to combat crime,,now how do we get our dept to look into it.It was on the wire service last week.

Well Mr. greenpeace I don’t see anything in the papers about the accident so I guess it wasn’t important enough for them to cover.

Because it was not in the paper does not mean it did not happen. I have seen many things that were not in the Hour but were in the Citizen or Advocate.
I don’t know what is going on with people today. Yesterday within 5 minutes of leaving my home, a lady pulled out of a side street and never even gave a glance in either direction. She caused several cars to slam on their brakes. If they had not seen her, and avoided her, there would have be a very serious side impact accident, involving at least 3 vehicle’s. The at the intersection of East Avenue and Winfield Street, a large Van pulled out of the Mobile station on Winfield St., heading towards East
Ave, and just drove around the cars waiting for the light and right into the on coming lane of traffic, then made a right turn in front of the waiting cars. In neither case was the driver using a cellphone. If a motorcycle had been in any of these situations the rider would have be DEAD. Is this a symptom of something deeper in the city, state and country?
People just don’t give a darn about anyone including themselves anymore. It is like a lot of people are in another world, when they are driving in traffic.

Katie Shannon -just to clarify, I meant the newspapers felt it wasn’t important enough a headline not that I didn’t think so.

If you read my entire posts you would realize the papers were probably written sat a day before the accident. We don’t have active city desks on sunday night you probably know that as well..
I suppose by your comment I falsey reported an accident ,,it goes to show if you live in Norwalk and have become use to news papers that cannot report the news. The advocate this morning no news on Norwalk on the front page.If we did have a story in the Advocate on the accident it would of been only the third story in the todays paper on Norwalk and the only current news of the day..that is not a news paper that is a tabloid.
Its sad when Advovate was being sold it was determined not only the union and the contracts needed addressing but the papers ability to deliver news under the current owner was obviously lacking. Gannett knew this as well and backed out of buying the paper, it was also said the paper will probably be sold at a yard sale price at this point.
Did you also take into consideration the morning news release by the poice dept is after the papers are delivered in the morning stop the presses only happens in Superman my friend.
I have said in the past if its not in the news in South Norwalk it didn’t happen, and because of the slow down day I’m sure this works for the police dept not to report any accident with injury. The fire dept by most standards have a report in most cities and reflects their work as well, an informed city is a city that can make decisions,it goes to show what has been said right along ,,
Unless there is day to day accountability on what our depts do and what the papers actually deliver for news we are left to my rants,,and really what would you want?
I would like to see some change , thats why I rant , why does one read my rants? maybe they want something also..
-
sorry posting #12 didn’t mean to sound defensive it was my first post and meant no disrepect,,but thanks for opening the floodgates
-
No problem Mr. Greenpeace, just wanted to clarify that I wasn’t saying you were wrong, I was saying that the newspapers are wrong for not reporting it. They go to print well after 5pm so there is no excuse. I agree with you, more concentration and more consequences for peoples actions is what is needed.
-
I do take your posting #15 as supportive and very sincere your right about the news they need to do more even the Hour was week today.
what seems to be missing in the header is manpower, “Organization and Staffing at the Command level,,what about manpower out in the street?
It would seem there is too many Cheifs and not enough Indians at Fort Apache,,
-
Did anyone read in the Hour about the Norwalk high school senior who was disgruntled because a lack of a chocolate fountain at the prom? Why didn’t she work to pay for one herself? Mea culpa–that would interfere with her summer beach time. Shows you the elitist entitlement mindset of our future “leaders”.
