Norwalk: Krummel Abandons Mayoral Pursuit

As someone commented here earlier in the week, Bill Krummel has dropped his plans to seek the Democratic nomination for mayor. Both the Advocate and the Hour report on the glacial candidacy race to determine who will run against Dick Moccia this fall. Moccia announced his candidacy in April. After more than two months of posturing, none of the rumored Democratic candidates has made a move except for Krummel.

Demonstrating how completely out of touch with the problems facing Norwalkers, Democratic town chair Galen Wells had this to say about Krummel.

He is an extraordinary councilman, and I hope he stays on the council. We really need him there. He’s led the way on the infrastructure,” Wells said.

Wells of course neglects to mention that Krummel, as public works chair, has known about flooding issues during his entire three terms as council member and has never bothered to do anything including this year. And he has been totally absent on fighting to preserve road paving funds in the budgets. Instead, his alleged attention to detail was cited as being known for correcting council meeting minutes.

Walter Briggs III, current chair of the Planning Commission is now the rumored favored candidate of the Ensure-swilling wing of the Democratic Town Committee. (Young whipper-snappers under 60 are only allowed once they pass obedience school) Nixon Alex Knopp is still lurking out there as a potential candidate, as well as Mike Coffey.

Did you notice the part in the Advocate where Knopp said he will announce today his intentions to run or not? Hah! clearly he has a strategy to make headlines by saying ‘no he won’t run’ and then endorse Briggs. An apparent shot at Coffey.

To paraphrase Carly Simon - He’s so vain…he really thinks this race is about him. (Knopp is irrelevant.)

Turfie, you should change the name of this blog to “Republican-biased Connecticut Commentary.” If you’re going to mudsling make sure you give both sides equal doses.

  • 3 indythinker // Jun 22, 2007 at 10:58 am

#2- I would say there’s plenty of mudslinging to go around on this blog. Hey, that’s an idea for new sections of this blog…one Republican biased and one democrat biased section. this way people can get out their frustration away from the newsworthy sections.

  • 4 indythinker // Jun 22, 2007 at 10:59 am

sorry, forgot to hit the caos on Democrat, nothing intentional.

  • 5 turfgrrl // Jun 22, 2007 at 11:17 am

anonymous 2: Oh come on now, you didn’t crack a smile at my snarky commentary? There’s no mud in my comments, Krummel has failed to do anything about flooding, he’s not alone, but then he was being singled out for his great attention to detail …. correcting meeting minutes. Which, perhaps unlike you, I have read several times, and thus have a basis to judge that great record on infrastructure.

Equal time for all, Turfie. How about looking into the past of some of our esteemed Council members on the other side of the aisle, or are you a little too close for comfort there?

  • 7 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 11:51 am

anyone in particular #6? Do you mean their personal pasts or their political pasts? Personal attacks on anyone is disgusting. Many people have pasts that they wish to forget and have worked very hard to be better people. When people are young they all make mistakes and shouldn’t be condemned for wanting to be better. Political pasts, now thats a different story everyone’s game on that one. Unfortunately some would have dirty laundry aired at every turn. Personally I look at who people are today and what they have contributed in a positive manner no matter what side of the isle they are on.

  • 8 turfgrrl // Jun 22, 2007 at 11:57 am

anonymous 6: You mean in 2001 when there were zero Republican council people. Or 2003 when there were 2 Republican council people? That leaves 2005, when there are 5. Ok, when have any of the five been chairmen of the Public Works committee? What? They haven’t? Yipes. So since the great flooding of 2002, one Republican has sat on the Public works committee and through the meeting minutes has asked many questions about contracts, funding and infrastructure. That would be Doug Hempstead. I should also mention that Carvin Hilliard, has been on that committee awhile and has asked plenty of questions too.
  • 9 anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 3:37 pm

So Turf what do you think of the young Dem candidates?

  • 10 anon // Jun 22, 2007 at 3:48 pm

#9, are you reading the same thing as everyone else? Where are the YOUNG dem candidates? Who are they?

  • 11 turfgrrl // Jun 22, 2007 at 4:54 pm

anonymous #9: I have heard that the Dems have some younger candidates. But I don’t know them, so therefor I have not formed an opinion. But never fear, once both party TCs get through the formality of nominating people to run, then the fun here will start. If anyone has any ideas about the type of coverage you’d like to see, let me know.
  • 12 anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 9:25 pm

The Norwalk Young Dems have no foot troops. Other than the leadership of Dave Watts, there is no one. Maybe you will start to consider people under 65 as young dems given the average age of the Norwalk DTC members.

  • 13 anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 9:27 pm

It is really a shame that Bill Krummel will not be running for mayor, and was driven out of the race by Walter O. Briggs III and his political cronies. Bill has accomplished alot more than Mr. Briggs. His presence at the top of the ticket will be sorely missed. He would have been able to beat Richard Moccia.

  • 14 anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 9:30 pm

I think David Watts should run for Mayor instead of Walter Briggs III (Thurston Howell). David Watts would be a breath of fresh air, and would invigorate many young people to come back into the party.

  • 15 Dem for Dave // Jun 22, 2007 at 9:31 pm

    I would second that.

  • 16 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 9:56 pm

David Watts has done nothing for the party. All talk no action. Just ask Carvin.

  • 17 anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 9:57 pm

I think David would be an excellent choice. He has vision, courage, intelligence, and fortitude. He has stood up to party leaders and won. He would be a great mayor. I think he would be refreshing.

  • 18 Demo // Jun 22, 2007 at 11:27 pm

Anon #16 Are you drinking hater-aid tonight? Dave W. is a hard working young man and the total team player.

  • 19 Anonymous // Jun 23, 2007 at 4:06 am

David Watts has never held an office, he has been in town for about 5 years other than people on this blog no one has ever heard of him and he has no credentials. Briggs is Briggs, guys and gals you can huff and puff all you want Moccia will win and probably get 65%. You can make up stories. Pick on everything he does even if it is right, continue your constant moaning about nothing ever being right in this town, but you same 25 still do not get it. The people like him and think he is doing a good job. He is everywhere and unlike other Mayors, he stays when he is invited and actually talks to people. So enjoy yourself and I know you will conintue your Norwalk and Moccia bashing, but in the end he is the Mayor and in November he will be again. Judging from most of the comments from the anti Moccia and Norwalk people it appears that you all are never happy about anything, but I will try to give you a bright spot, when he wins you will have 2 more years to pick on him.

  • 20 Demo // Jun 23, 2007 at 6:23 am

Moccia supporter/Anon 19 Nobody heard of Lex Paulson until, he almost knocked off Cafero.

  • 21 anonymous // Jun 23, 2007 at 7:02 am

Lex Loser didn’t win. It was a big dem year and he did not get the job done. He never lived in town before and has not lived in town since. Good riddance.

  • 22 anonymous // Jun 23, 2007 at 7:03 am

who are the dems running in any of the various districts for common council ?

  • 23 Disbelieving Dem // Jun 23, 2007 at 7:38 am

I was away on vacation for the past week and when I returned I skimmed the past weeks newspapers. Walter Briggs ? Is it the April 1 edition by mistake ? I saw that it was not, and am truly disturbed. This is the best that my party can do. Disappointing. I voted for Alex Knopp in the past three elections, and will not be voting for the Democratic candidate this time.

  • 24 Anonymous // Jun 23, 2007 at 9:22 am

David Watts does a good job of talking to himself on this blog. I hope no one thinks this is some kind of ground swell for a Watts candidacy. It ain’t goin’ to happen!

  • 25 anonymous // Jun 23, 2007 at 9:41 am

Number 24: yes it is. I think many dems will voice their support for David Watts at the July 23, 2007 meeting where a Mayoral candidate will be selected. The Briggs legacy is a disgrace. As a proud african-american in this city, I will not be supporting a candidate for Mayor who has not disavowed his grandfather’s known and noted racist behavior when he owned a major league baseball team. His grandfather refused to allow minorities on the team and was well known as a racist. The democrats should be ashamed to run this type of candidate who should be disavowing his families sorry past. Some of Mr. Briggs other relatives have disavowed the sins of their fathers, and so should he. I will be supporting David Watts for Mayor and ask others to join in this fight for a candidate who supports the minority community.

  • 26 Anonymous // Jun 23, 2007 at 10:01 am

Too bad some people have to introduce the issue of racism where there doesn’t need to be any.

As a male of the caucasian persuasion, my ancestors owned slaves, most likely. Does that mean I’m a racist? No. Do I need to apologize for my ancestors? No. And I wouldn’t, either, if I was running for office.

I am liberal and open-minded but I am really tired of being taken to task for something I am not responsible for. By the way, I don’t feel like I have to accept Jesus for having died for my sins, either, because that was a decision that someone else decided they should make for me. However, I still am a very spiritual person.

Get over yourself. Raising this issue only discredits your cause.

  • 27 Demo // Jun 23, 2007 at 10:37 am

Anon 24- Still drinking the hater-aid-Dave Watts is in Cleveland, Ohio.

  • 28 Anonymous // Jun 23, 2007 at 10:49 am

    27. this has nothing to do with hate, only a stable mind and competence. That is basic to a candidate.

  • 29 Race Issues With the Dems // Jun 23, 2007 at 11:03 am

The attacks on David Watts is just another example of the limousine liberals that dominate the DTC. As long as the we accept the fakers we get treated like second class citizens behind our backs. David is a good Dem. He’s worked hard for the party. The whisper campaign against him comes from the top, and don’t kid yourself about it just being leadership. They smile and tell you one thing and then do something else.

  • 30 anonymous // Jun 23, 2007 at 11:33 am

Why doesn’t Walter Briggs talk about Walter Briggs position on race issues????? He is a candidate for mayor and some of us would like to know where he stands. He should come forward and talk about this important issue. It is very crucial to some of us dems in Ward B.

  • 31 anonymous // Jun 23, 2007 at 3:59 pm

right, you are in Ward B…sure you are… Maybe Briggs should announce his candidacy first before he talks about his position on issues. Nice try at playing the race card, though. Maybe the conversation should be about what the republicans have done to support minorities in Norwalk….oh, right, there isn’t anything to talk about…

  • 32 Anonymous // Jun 23, 2007 at 4:11 pm

Mr. head of development Briggs has done but nothing about all the places middle class people can afford to live. He says they’ll be torn down and he wants fancy condos put in their place. Don’t be all righteous about how much democrats have done to support minorities in Norwalk. They’ve goen and done nothing but support kicking people out of their homes in south norwalk. And they keep looking the other way when landlords don’t fix windows and doors. You want to see what they are really doing? Look at what the plans are for south norwalk, high priced condos and office buildings. Nothing for families struggling to survive.

  • 33 Say it isn\'t so // Jun 23, 2007 at 11:34 pm

Walter Briggs Sr. was a real SOB. According to the Detriot News his theme was “No Jigs with Briggs”. This is really shocking that the two finalist for Mayor would be Briggs and Bill Krummel of the South Norwalk is a ghetto fame.

“No jigs with Briggs” sounds like a good campaign slogan. Only the Norwalk Dems would run something like this. It sends a horrible message to all the minorities in this city.

  • 36 Anonymous // Jun 24, 2007 at 10:57 am

“No Jigs with Briggs” is some cold S#$t.

  • 37 high road // Jun 24, 2007 at 11:26 am

I can’t believe posters are stooping this low to discredit a mayoral candidate of any party. It only shows that the GOP tactic of “swift boating” and “Tea with the Taliban” has firmly embedded itself in the Republican party — even at the local level. Absolutely disgusting. Those tactics will circle back on you.

  • 38 AnonymousDem // Jun 24, 2007 at 1:45 pm

Stop all the race baiting! Let’s talk issues of 2007.

  • 39 Mr Greenpeace // Jun 24, 2007 at 3:30 pm

    what are the issues?

we need some one to talk facts figures and solutions on what subjects maybe start a list and keep political parties out of it.

Is the next election going to based on fiscal management?
