OK. Who saw the articles in today’s papers about the new logo for Norwalk? Does ANYONE besides me feel that besides being absolutely butt-ugly, the mayor should have:

    1. Used a NORWALK firm to do the job, and not someone from BLACK ROCK;

    2. Thought about paying for the work rather than accepting it for free? I run a business and if I want professional results, I am going to go out and hire a professional and pay for it. I believe in this life, you get what you pay for.

    3. Considered a slogan like “Norwalk on the Take”, considering the sleaze factor involved in recent botched deals like the Vets’ Park debacle.

  • 2 indiga // Jun 22, 2007 at 9:46 am

Be interesting to know who worked with the designers to make the creative selection. You;re right. There are so many talented Norwalk designers who are also members of the Chamber of Commerce.

  • 3 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 9:50 am

Tad Diesel didn’t exactly give it a ringing endorsement by saying “You never know if marketing makes a difference until it makes a difference.”

Hey, you think that was his approach when he ran a bank for a living?

  • 4 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 9:52 am

Both comments are tacky not the design.
Everyone complains about spending and when the Mayor does something that is costing the city abosolutely nothing, you still complain. Its not exactly what I would have chosen but it does have a nice slogan and a nice flow. Can’t please everyone!

  • 5 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 9:59 am

The logo reflects the continuing “hole in the donut” attitude embraced by our City officials. What’s tacky is that attitude and the resulting work that it encourages.

At least it will be a switch the next time the mayor wants to use the City letterhead to endorse a political candidate, though.

  • 6 indythinker // Jun 22, 2007 at 10:07 am

What part of the mayor didn’t use city letter head didn’t you get? Political leaders use their seal, their likeness etc to make endorsements. However, the candidates committee pays for the letterhead image and the printing as well as the postage. I thought this was already determined many posts ago? But then there will always be those that can’t understand or in this case refuse to understand. Now I’m sure this will give you a few more posts because there are those of you that can’t just let those we elected do their job without finding fault. Perhaps you should concentrate more on these candidates performance than on something that has no merit.

  • 7 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 10:13 am

Nothing was determined in these posts, only flimsy excuses were provided by the mayor’s apologists.

The inquiries made to the State Elections Enforcement Commission based on that exchange informed that there is enough of a question to have them suggest that a complaint be filed. I just don’t have the inclination to do that myself. I would rather leave that up to the politicos in town.

  • 8 indythinker // Jun 22, 2007 at 10:18 am

I would imagine that if a complaint were filed that would lead to many inquiries on both sides of the isle.
It probably wouldn’t be in the best interest of either party since both are guilty of lending their support in their official capacity. It would have to encompass the entire state and federal elections and would probably be a huge endeavor. With the new elections rules in place, perhaps this wil not be a topic of discussion in future races.

  • 9 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 10:21 am

Lending support in an official capacity is not the same thing as using the city’s logo and municipal identity to endorse a political platform or position.

  • 10 Advertising Pro // Jun 22, 2007 at 10:25 am

Think that major corporations looking at the image of the municipality that they’ll be relocating to will want to be identified with such an amateurish image as the new logo?

If I worked in the marketing department of one of those companies I would be thinking “what a bunch of rubes.”

  • 11 Mr Greenpeace // Jun 22, 2007 at 10:44 am

I can’t weigh in on this one i can’t even draw a stick figure, but the wife who is a teacher in Ct said her 5th grade class could of matched or done a better logo.

I would think where we are on the water a sick seagull would of fit the feeling given off by city hall.

Now we know what the chamber of commerance was doing with the mayor , it wasn’t a power meeting over the employees of business beaten in some of the last robberies and thier safety.

  • 12 Jasmine Bullard // Jun 22, 2007 at 11:01 am

    ——————-
    Heh,heh, BINGO.
    —————————–
I don’t think that the new logo is all that impressive. Even bowels move, but the logo should have said “Moving ahead into the 21 Century”

  • 13 high road // Jun 22, 2007 at 11:03 am

Holding a design competition would have been cool. Run the designs in the paper…get people to vote. Or have a panel select the new logo. Didn’t Norwalk do that for the slogan a while back? A bunch of us came up with great slogans…”Norwalk: Better than Bridgeport”…”Norwalk: Exits 14 through 16″…and similar gems. Didn’t win.

  • 14 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 11:13 am

How about “Norwalk: Where any Dick can get to be mayor?”

  • 15 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 11:13 am

    # 13, I can’t imagine why those slogans didn’t win!
But a design competition would have been nice but then turns into a frenzy and more bickering and I believe it is the norm that the administration in place does have the authority to do what has been done with the new logo. I think that it didn’t cost us anything is a huge plus. It actually kind of grows on you once you look at it for a while. Kind of like NYC the city that never sleeps or Stamford ‘The City That Works.’ By the way, does that imply the rest of the cities don’t?

  • 16 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 11:14 am

Grows on you like a toenail fungus…

  • 17 Happy Norwalk Republican // Jun 22, 2007 at 11:23 am

Turf can you post the new logo? It’s not on the city web site.

  • 18 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 11:24 am

What, you don’t read newspapers? Looking for a little free publicity for the City here, Happy?

  • 19 high road // Jun 22, 2007 at 11:38 am

Another non-winning slogan: “Norwalk: Gateway to Wilton.”

  • 20 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 11:50 am

How about: “Norwalk: We’ll Respect You in the Morning.”

  • 21 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 11:57 am

How about Norwalk “home of the ungrateful”
Since no matter who is in office we all find fault.

  • 22 High Road // Jun 22, 2007 at 12:38 pm

    Or “Norwalk: Yesterday’s Whine”

  • 23 Mr Greenpeace // Jun 22, 2007 at 12:41 pm

commit a crime and don’t do the time

  • 24 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 1:01 pm

“Norwalk: No Property Developer Left Behind.”

  • 25 High Road // Jun 22, 2007 at 1:25 pm

    “Home of the Jazz Zinger”?

So how is that Festival coming along? Still holding to that estimate of 20,000 attendance — and only five (undoudedly hard-working) perfomers for “noon to moon”? Can’t wait to see how this plays out…

  • 26 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 1:34 pm

Hey, Bridgeport is the “Park City”. How about “Norwalk: The Pork City.”

  • 27 Watchdog // Jun 22, 2007 at 2:04 pm

    Hmm…

    How ’bout

Norwalk: Endowment Fund for New York’s Retirees

  • 28 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 2:51 pm

How about “The City of the Disfuntional BOE?

  • 29 High Road // Jun 22, 2007 at 3:53 pm

The more I look at the logo, the more I think it is highly relevant. The backward and forward facing serifs on the W and A of Norwalk look like large drainage pipes and the “on the move” looks like gray backed up rain water coming out of those pipes. Just an unartistic observation…

  • 30 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 4:07 pm

Come to think of it, “on the move” does look like it’s about to be carried away by flood waters.

  • 31 Jeff Hall // Jun 22, 2007 at 4:17 pm

I like the new logo. I wouldn’t mind wearing a t-shirt with it. It’s easy to read, easy to recognize and visually attractive.

  • 32 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 4:18 pm

how about it refers to the ocean? After all, Norwalk boasts the Oyster festival, the beach, Vets Park etc and is bordered by Long Island Sound. Perhaps art is just not your forte? Come on, this is just another ploy to dump on the mayor and everyone knows it. Perhaps it should have been something more on the lines of “Norwalk, Strong Council/Weak Mayor and it all depends on who you vote for” Boy that should raise a few eyebrows since the infrastructure or demise there of is the fault of decades of administrations. if it makes you happy to continuously bad mouth this administration then have at it. After all we live in a country of free speach. And don’t go blaming the republicans for my post because I vote for the person, not the party.

  • 33 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 4:35 pm

A new design for a logo, whether you like it or not it is one thing thing. But to stretch that to constant negative barrage of insults aganst the Mayor and the town you suposedly love. Implied corruption and the wrong company was picked, who paid who off, why not a competition, you same 25 people have nothing better to do in life and as our town clerk Andy Garfunkle said, you have nothing to contibute. My god it was a letter head, chill out, you people can not even enjoy a jazz concert coming to Norwalk. I am surprised you do not start picking on the SONO community for having the arts festival, they must pay someone off to get the streets closed. Come on, this a pretty good city, the council people try their best, the Mayor is actually not a bad guy, most people seem comforble, nothing is going to be perfect in life, but the constant mistatement of facts, implied corruption or personal attacks are not the answer. Why can’t it be: We opposed the minautre golf it was a bad idea, instead of “oh a deal was made someone got paid off.” If someone got paid off, how come the project was stopped? Or the jazz festival. What did Grant do? he applied the same as the Oyster festival the Haitain festival, the Columbian festival, he paid the cost,is paying for the cops and buses. No one was paid off. If you think Vets park was a bad place to hold it, thats is fine, but to imply corruption is really very mean. Some people have to hate all the time, but this blog could have so many more useful ideas than spreading rumours and lies about people, which bassically turns everyoe off and limits the comments to the same 25. I doubt if this will penetrate to some, but maybe one person may change their apporach. One can only hope.

  • 34 anon // Jun 22, 2007 at 5:04 pm

OK, folks, rose colored glasses ON! Blinders ATTACHED! Thinking OFF!

A blog is only interesting when there’s controversy. Not that it makes any difference, of course. Has the complaint that Herb Grant used public office for private gain made any difference? None whatsoever. Or the fact that the new ethics code removed the section that made his actions an ethics violation — machts nicht. So rant on….

  • 35 anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 5:24 pm

There are lots of good things happening in Norwalk that we should be talking about! The city is full of assests! Why all the negative over a logo? I think that the last logo we had was introduced over 20 years ago “Norwalk…the right place…the right time?” I don’t remember alot of crazy talk going around then over that proposal. I think alot of us were behind the idea, and felt it brought out some dormant pride in many of us. I for one would certainly support a new city logo that would capture everything good going on in Norwalk. I have to believe that regardless of what party we support, or if you think liberal or conservative, we can all find many a good things to say about our home town of Norwalk.

  • 36 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 5:30 pm

Well! number 34 proved my point. Attacked right away, thank you number 35 for some sense of reason. By the way 34 can you detail how he used his public office for gain. He recused himself from any vote on the approval and as said previously, paid just like any other group using the park, so please take off your mud colored glasses anmd tell us where he broke the law and if you have proof of a crime why have you not presented it to the proper authorities, or are the police and courts paid off to?

  • 37 Aunt Bertha // Jun 22, 2007 at 5:53 pm

There could have been a high school student that could tag the Logo in a more fashionable look.I hope they did not pay a lot for that…but again it is Norwalk.

  • 38 L'arlequino // Jun 22, 2007 at 6:17 pm

Gee, maybe Turfie could find some examples of other city marketing logos to compare this one with… ;)

  • 39 Anonymous // Jun 22, 2007 at 6:46 pm

#34 - Amen, you said it. Nobody would bother reading this rag if it were all “let’s not rock the boat” hive thinkers like some would have it.

I for one am glad to see people speaking up about their own personal version of the elephant in the room, whether it’s a do-nothing whacko museum curator, entrenched good-ole-boy back room politickin’, or who we can blame for the parking problems at 50 Washington St.

If those people don’t like it, then as a well known local crackpot writes so often in the Letters section of the Hour, “turn the page.”

  • 40 AnonymousDem // Jun 22, 2007 at 8:05 pm

Yes it was time for a new logo. The tag line is fine, a rememberence of Alex Knopp’s campaign slogan, but fine. The logo is amateurish. Gray on gray type? Mr. Mayor, please go back to the drawing board. Allow other submissions. Free is sometimes too much of a price to pay.

    In the open thread spirit…

Greenpeace? What fire on the islands? This has been a major concern of mine. I’ve been worried when I see spent fireworks out there on the beaches. More info would be deeply appreciated.

  • 43 Mr Greenpeace // Jun 23, 2007 at 12:23 am

the fire dept responded to a fire around 4 give or take an hour, where it was said a foundation was involved , they had probaly a dozen men out there while the trucks sat with an officer at sono seafood. They were still on the island (sorry don’t know my Islands) at midnight.

Last week i believe they had a controlled burn and forgot to notify the fire dept as they responded with a pump to the marine police dept on water street.

Never been out there but i hear there is some real estate out there between all the islands.

Its odd they talk about logos for the city , I see a lighthouse out on one of the islands is it the same as the one on the building by the bridge by water street..now that would make a nice logo for a sea fairing tourism spot like Norwalk..

I hope this helps , I hope someone helped those guys as well, Norwalk firefighters helped firefighters families from Boston a couple of years ago when two firefighters were hurt Norwalk hospital was the only ones around to help them at the time .The story was told many times about the help from Norwalks finest.

  • 44 Vet Park Junkie // Jun 23, 2007 at 12:28 am

    Thanks! I’ll go out tomorrow.

  • 45 Anonymous // Jun 23, 2007 at 6:01 am

I saw the fire about 5:30 last night as I was driving down Washington St. over the Stroffolino bridge, it was BIG. I drove out to Calf Pasture right away and by that time it was out but still smoking. Hard to tell what had been burning but it was on the north shore of Chimons Island, I think.

  • 46 Anonymous // Jun 23, 2007 at 8:38 am

Mr. Greenpeace - the lighthouse is a great idea for the logo. I guess it’s too obvious but then as a metaphor for vision it would need something in the govt. to back that up.

  • 47 gfaux // Jun 23, 2007 at 9:05 am

norwalk: Gateway To The Sound logo is the two l/h that on the sides of norwalk and the islands under the main saying also I give up any rights to use the idea

  • 48 Truthfull Taxpayer // Jun 23, 2007 at 9:48 am

The Norwalk logo when I was growing up was, “Norwalk - City of Science and Gateway to all New England.” Too bad that this is no longer the case. The new logo is ugly but I guess its better than Norwalk - Right Place at the Right Time (to pick your pocket), or Norwalk - All Carpet-Bagger Developers Welcome!

  • 49 Watchdog // Jun 23, 2007 at 9:58 am

Too negative? Sorry, but the logo there prompts negativity. I’m fond of this city, but when I see the logo:

    Norwalk…on the move..

    my mind shifts to

    Norwalk…moving out…

I would think the marketing agent needs to address the subliminal impact of this logo.

  • 50 Anonymous // Jun 23, 2007 at 10:07 am

I think the City needs to address the qualifications of the marketing agent.
