Norwalk: Get Your Kicks on Route 136

Get your kicks on Route 136, but not if you a “through truck.” So clarification is in order. According to a letter that the Mayor sent to the DOT last November, the DOT is supposed to adopt regulations to prevent truck traffic from driving through Rowayton. This was a deal made in order to build out MLK over environmental and neighborhood issues. Norwalk, as a city, has no jurisdiction over a state road. From the letter:

The letter presented by Duane J. Lovello, Chief of Police of Darien, dated November 6, 2006, clearly expresses the burden on Route 136 caused by excessive truck traffic through Darien.

We experience similar, and in some ways worse, problems on Route 136 in the Rowayton section of Norwalk. Based upon my own personal observations, that section of Route 136 is quite narrow and is an active pedestrian zone. Large trucks proceeding through the center of Rowayton at the posted speeds present a safety hazard, but often these trucks are over loaded and
traveling above posted speeds. Many in our community believe that if the truck traffic is not curtailed and controlled there could be tragic accident which all will regret.

For more than twenty years, The City of Norwalk has sought an effective means to limit this excessive truck traffic on Route 136 through Rowayton but it has been unsuccessful. We now believe that the No Through Truck zone requested by Darien on the Tokeneke Road section of Route 136 would effectively limit excess truck traffic on Route 136 in Norwalk.

So whats this mean I go out and measure the roads , get detailed information and reports from the police dept on acidents in South Norwalk and try and argue the point with Duff by when?

Sen Duff correct me if i’m wrong he is a real estate agent with a licence praticing in Norwalk , why would he want trucks in an area that would benefit by not having them = property value

Is this a conflict of Interest?

There was a AP reporter approach his office and ask about environmental issues in South Norwalk and his office said there were no issues.

Clearly trucks in South Norwalk will be adding to the tons of pollutants allready being admitted by business that have a license from the EPA to do so figure that information will be given out tommorrow,,I doubt it

This is fact published on the net (EPA website) that either paper can write about because one is needed to write about the environment both papers say they were going to address by adding a reporter with background, but never have.

With the exhaust from trucks alone is a news worthy story, and then again there is a seperate EPA report on the power plant that no one seems to think about off of woodward ave,,its a joke isn’t it?

no its only South Norwalks problem

Duff is one of your typical spineless Deomocrats who bend to whatever prevailing wind of election math tells them. He spends zero effort on south Norwalk because he knows they’ll vote for him no matter what. It’s a shame isn’t it?

Looks like Bill Krummel is running for council, not mayor. His bid was shot down by the party boss.

apparently he hasn’t been invited for cocktails enough with those in charge to have made an impression. Maybe he should spend more time at Silver Star and he’d get in good with the right people.

afternoon I hear the report was put on the table for later talks, Norwalk has some homework to do from the sounds of it, The sate now needs to hear from Norwalk.

They need to show the South Norwalk side of things ,this should be interesting someone in city hall must detail what this site states for stats, lets see who read this site?

I can’t beleive the state was able to deflect the meeting back to city hall,,or can I?

According to the state the environmental aspect was not even touched sounds like this process will take years so the trucks can go anywhere they want,,and nobody can do anything about it,,by the way when i spoke about the pollutants and the EPA reports they simply said this time was only about safety not prepared to talk about anything else..a foot in the door people now walk in and do something.

I trust who runs for mayor will know something more than the last ones..

I think the fact that the Rowayton group doesn’t even know the mayors name says all I need to know about them. They hate the fact that, and deny it whenever possible, they are even part of Norwalk.

    Let the trucks roll!

your right Broke Citizen, looks like they need Norwalk now.Looks like Norwalk needs some stats and its going to be interesting how they attain them.

School is out and winter is not near, Its what was said earlier while all the BS was flying, meanwhile the children are the test subjects. They now have time to put sidewalks, crosswalks in and fix the potholes and deal with all the problems uncovered in the quest for change. They did say they have the money so lets spend it.I wonder what PR Duff salvaged out of all this.

I understand that the problem in Rowayton is the UPS, FedEx and other delivery trucks. How can they ban this trucks and still keep their deliveries to Rowayton businessmen on schedule. This one has me confused. Let me make another popular statement. Lets put the toll booths back on the CT Thruway again. With the new EZ Pass High speed lanes that allow payment at 40 MPH it has now grown to about 50% of the drivers on the Interstate. Best of all IT IS FREE. OK, lets hear it……..

Turfy I think this may be better in the Rowayton thread?

    Sorry

  • 11 turfgrrl // Jun 20, 2007 at 8:43 am

Dave Roberts: Do you want me to do anything with it? I think it’s okay here, this is also a Rowayton traffic post.
  • 12 Anonymous // Jun 20, 2007 at 10:30 am

I think they are looking at thru traffic going from I-95 to South Norwalk depots. Delivery trucks (large and small) can’t be stopped from going into residential areas to make deliveries. That would make no sense.

Here’s an update on the June 19 meeting between the City, Rowayton, and the DOT on Route 136 truck traffic: http://www.rowaytonct.com/trafficabatement.html

Uh oh! Just in case support is needed, someone better tell Rowayton that Norwalk’s mayor is Richard, not Mike!

  • 15 Mr Greenpeace // Jun 25, 2007 at 1:27 pm

afternoon Watchdog, your right! I can’t improve, add to or think of anything to say,,you have left me speechless!

    Mr. Greenpeace :(
