Get your kicks on Route 136, but not if you a “through truck.” So clarification is in order. According to a letter that the Mayor sent to the DOT last November, the DOT is supposed to adopt regulations to prevent truck traffic from driving through Rowayton. This was a deal made in order to build out MLK over environmental and neighborhood issues. Norwalk, as a city, has no jurisdiction over a state road. From the letter:
The letter presented by Duane J. Lovello, Chief of Police of Darien, dated November 6, 2006, clearly expresses the burden on Route 136 caused by excessive truck traffic through Darien.
We experience similar, and in some ways worse, problems on Route 136 in the Rowayton section of Norwalk. Based upon my own personal observations, that section of Route 136 is quite narrow and is an active pedestrian zone. Large trucks proceeding through the center of Rowayton at the posted speeds present a safety hazard, but often these trucks are over loaded and
traveling above posted speeds. Many in our community believe that if the truck traffic is not curtailed and controlled there could be tragic accident which all will regret. For more than twenty years, The City of Norwalk has sought an effective means to limit this excessive truck traffic on Route 136 through Rowayton but it has been unsuccessful. We now believe that the No Through Truck zone requested by Darien on the Tokeneke Road section of Route 136 would effectively limit excess truck traffic on Route 136 in Norwalk.
