Norwalk: Grants Coordinator Update

Following the post and comments here, I decided to send an email to Katherine Pytleski, Norwalk’s Grants Coordinator suggesting the workshop idea. She promptly wrote back and described her very active role in working with departments to date.

Over the past year Katherine has met with DPW, Health, Parks and Recreation, Fire, Police, Youth, Board of Ed, Redevelopment, Historical Society, Conservation, the Library, and Marketing/Business Development. Her plan was to get past the introductions, and work on understanding the issues and needs as well as plans for future proposals. She singled out the Department heads from DPW, Parks and Recreation, as well as staff from the Redevelopment Agency, as taking the time to spend several hours with her including tours of the city to show her what they had been doing to date.

The basic take away is that Katherine has worked hard at building a good relationship with city departments, and the process is picking up steam. From her email:

As I find grant opportunities, I contact the appropriate Department staff and the Mayor with a synopsis of the RFP. They review the opportunities in light of department needs and get back to me. We either go forward or pass on an opportunity based on everyone’s assessment of its relevance. I also look for funding that fits people’s ideas and requests.

In a follow up conversation she said she was working on a youth services grant application along with one for a DPW project. But she was eager to work with non-profits in the city, and thought the idea of a workshop for non-profits was an excellent idea.

WIth that, she encourages anyone to contact her, and suggest ideas for grants and ask questions about the process.

thank you that seems to be step in the right direction, now lets see what the dept heads have on their wish list and see if that coincides with the needs of the city. Then make sure the needs are properly thought out beyond what most think is politics. I would like to hear the condition of our equipment in the fire police dpw recreation, ect the age and condition of each item, the grants I’m only familiar with gives us replacements to what we need.I know there is more i don’t have clue that is..

So far this year we have had three vac trucks waiting to be fixed, waiting to be looked at waiting to be replaced, one day i saw a 100,000 dollar truck go by on a hook i trust not to LaJoys,,so with that in mind I’m sure she will need to know exactly what it is we need and if its replacing something or just buying another so it sits behind the old police station..

    make sense?

lets give this process a chance to work and find the info flowing in from our dept heads,,if there is blame to be written lets write it for the right ones and not the one who has reached out..

I would thou suggest she outlines some of this in the news she is what I am told alone in her office fending for the whole city,,it looks so much better in black and white and eliminates third party reporters such as we see out here all the time,,something like a news release would be realistic than she said he said we all said..

It might detour skeptics and allow her to actaully get some help from the residents about time we knew what was going on,,,

The more information we can get posted to the city web site, the less incomplete information will circulate. I am happy to see that people are linking to the city web site for additional information.
