Guest View: “Massage Parlors” vs Ethical Massage Therapists and the Need for Regulation
June 6th, 2007 · Comments Off
By Susan Lane
I have followed with interest the articles in The Hour with regard to closing down illegal “massage parlors” that try to represent themselves as legitimate massage therapists, and are anything but.
As a recently licensed massage therapist I would like to applaud State Senator, Bob Duff for his extensive work in getting laws on the books in Hartford that will help all towns and cities in Connecticut to close down the blight of these illegal “massage parlors.” He has given us the “muscle” we lacked before on a state level, to deal with this nuisance.

State Eminent Domain Bill Could Get Derailed Because of Billboards
June 6th, 2007 · 1 Comment
The Courant is reporting that the bill passed by the legilslature is being objected to by the DOT, which claims it will lose Federal highway Funds, because of a provision about bill boards. From The Courant:
The Federal Highway Administration warned Tuesday that the legislature’s recent reform of eminent domain laws violates the Highway Beautification Act and could cost the state about $40 million annually.
Legislators voted by overwhelming margins last week to reform how municipalities can take property by eminent domain, saying the measure was a protection for homeowners against big government.

Amero Granted New Trial
June 6th, 2007 · 1 Comment
While not the complete exoneration that is warranted, the State made the right decision by granting a new trial. This will give former substitute teacher Julie Amero an opportunity to mount a defense that includes testimony from technical people. Not just allegations about what a computer can do by poorly Police witnesses.
As computers become totally integrated in every facet of the life, it is important that Police departments keep up to date with the training to understand how to forensically examine computers, whether it be for criminal activity involving solicitation of minors or financial activities.

Norwalk: Finally, DPW Acts on Illegal Sewer Hookups
June 6th, 2007 · 2 Comments
One of the many issues facing DPW in determining why the Sewer system is flooding, is the fact that there are many illegal hookups to the system. While they have know about them, the DPW has not been known for with swift pace for following through on forcing the hookups to be terminated. For example, its been years that illegal hookups exist on Olmstead Place, yet letters noticing those residents have apparently not gone out.
But with the moritorium on all new hookups on Westport ave, the opportunity to act presented itself and Hal Alvord explained all at a Public Works meeting last night. From The Hour:

Norwalk: Flooding Fix Contract Stirs Controversy
June 6th, 2007 · 1 Comment
Hal Alvord says dredging and regrading the Fitch pond will fix the flooding on Olmstead Place. Flood victim Diane Cece disagrees. And thus the debate about the allocation of a $333,900 engineering contract towards fixing flooding problems became a debate on what is causing the flooding. Except the news coverage didn’t get into the details of that, so we are left with this, from The Hour:

Norwalk: Corda’s Revenge? Total Secrecy
June 6th, 2007 · 19 Comments
The BOE met last night and Sal Corda decided to reveal tactic number 5 in his efforts to continue with the unchecked spending that has fueled his reign over the Norwalk Public School System. And that tactic can best be described as, “What you don’t know won’t hurt you.” Keeping the public in the dark, as well as the BOE is apparently Corda’s insurance against being held accountable for his reckless spending that has resulted in Norwalk paying more per student than any other school system in the state. But don’t spend too much time debating that economic measure, by virtually all measures, Norwalk pays more and gets less, the state board of Education says so, the BOE’s numbers sya so, and the taxpayers who looked at it carefully say so.
