Transportation Forum Revealed People Like Cars

Not only do people like cars, but they drive them. All of which will come as no surprise to people who live and work in Norwalk. But the forum was not without some interesting data points. Of the 78 people who took the survey, 99% take a private car and 92% think traffic congestion is a big problem. The consensus appeal, fix the pot holes and get rid of speed bumps. And fix the traffic lights and crosswalks. In other words, people like their cars to move quickly from point A to point B.

Unless they were looking for more sidewalks. For those of you who missed the presentation, here’s a link to the presentation. While the forum food was sponsored by Eveready Taxis, the presentation was presented by Mary Pugh.

Doug Hempstead, Common Council member said afterwards, “It looks like 35 years ago we planned things about right. I think we need to create more walking paths in the city.”

There were other ideas raised about the lack of parking at the SoNo train station, and the Norwalk Library. There was also some interest in improving the train service and station at Merrit 7 along the Danbury train line.

The DOT is holding a public hearing 5/31 at 10 a.m. (until about 2 or 3 p.m.) at the Norwalk City Hall Community Room on the need and necessity for more taxis. Eveready has applied for 11 licenses to serve Norwalk.

We need more taxis like I need a hole in my head.

More taxis, walking paths, etc. These are not going to eliminate traffic. People are not going to use walking paths to shop on Connecticut or Westport Avenues. More taxis will add to the congestion. The problem is that Norwalk has overbuilt and done nothing about widening roads, or instituting smart traffic patterns. The turning lanes installed on Westport Avenue are a hazard. Right turn lanes facing left turn lanes - both cars facing each other. I’m surprised there are not more head-on crashes. The so-called traffic experts come in and say that this condo development or that big box store will not add an appreciable amount of traffic or will only generate so many cars an hour. On paper, it looks good. In real life it is a different scenario. Unfortunately, the “experts” go home to their uncongested towns and we are stuck with their results.

Sounds like the conslutant had the answer and then skewed the questions to fit. That’s how some people make their money. Tiny sample, bad science, bad survey, bad results. Someone paid a lot of money for coo coo results.
This was all a farce $$$.

We have to do more to get cars off the roads. We need bike paths, not car lanes. We need more buses not more parking lots.

Connecticut Avenue and the Post Road will never be pedestrian friendly. All we can hope for is that redevelopment efforts will provide for better situations that promote pedestrian access and mass transit options.

From state and federal governments, we need greater incentives to give up our addiction to personal vehicles and the accompanying reliance on oil-based fuels. Until they get serious about that, nothing will change.

Hybrids are a start but the City has to do more than give Moccia one to preen about. That was a campaign stunt, pure and simple. How about a hybrid fleet?

There are more than enough taxi’s in Norwalk. Eveready, Norwalk Taxi and Yellow cab. if you look at the survey the results show that only 15% of the people use them. Then why do we need more? They add more problems to local traffic and they are closed in the wee hrs of the morning when some people could actually use one. Some of the drivers are rude and downright abusive. Some of the owners couldn’t care less. Yellow cab and Eveready have the rudest drivers ever. They obviously have never been taught that the customer should be their #1 priority. riding with them is like riding with a New york cabbie. If you call their offices to complain, the people on the phone are rude and abusive so why do we need more of them?
