The best way to honor our country’s war dead is to bring the living home and end the war.

Just back from the parade- best ever!!!! Kudos to all the volunteers and the Norwalk Veterans Memorial Committee for a great parade and to all the vets who marched today! Thanks once again to Ms. Romano for the Adopt-a-Platoon float and for collecting the troop supplies. Many people were unaware this year, but pledged to bring bags next year!
At 3:00pm today, where ever you are, please stop and observe the National Moment of Remembrance in a moment of silence in memory of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. And every day of the year, when you see a veteran, thank him or her. That’s all: just say thank you. Those are the two most powerful words to honor these fine folks. -
Flooding knows no holiday: before I leave for friend’s bbq and to honor their veteran son, just a word on flooding to start another do-nothing week in Norwalk.
Today’s Advocate reports the “STATE VOWS PROMPT ANSWER TO FLOODING”. Seems the DOT is now getting around after 2 years to studying the flooding problems….not in Norwalk…..IN DARIEN! Not in residences homes…..IN BUSINESSES.
Our elected officials need to examine why there is such a delayed response from our DOT, and more importantly, why Darien and not Norwalk???? Why flooding of businesses vs. flooding of homes? The DOT and MetroNorth have let the Fitch Street culvert silt over for years, possibly contributing to flooding in East Norwalk homes, yet our Mayor and DPW director tell us they get no response from the DOT. Mr. Nolin is waiting to hear from Mr. Alvord on who he should contact: here’s a name straight from the article: DOT spokesman Kevin Nursick.
I don’t want to sound judgmental, but Darien gets sound barriers, Norwalk gets none. Darien gets flood study, Norwalk gets none. C’mon Bob Duff, help us out over here. You are quoted as saying the Darien problem “is not just a flooding issue, it’s an economic issue”. Really???? WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK OUR PROBLEM IS WHEN WE LOSE TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN POSSESSIONS AND SPEND ALMOST AS MUCH TRYING TO REBUILD OUR HOMES? Businesses have insurance. Homeowners with finished basements do not. Take half of the $250,000 allocated for the study of the Darien problem, and fix the culverts in East Norwalk. This work could be done tomorrow at 9am at both MetroNorth culverts at Fitch and on Bouton. Just a MetroNorth Safety person, a CONNDOT representative, a Norwalk DPW supervisor and a heavy duty piece of equipment. No studies, no engineering designs, just clean the effing thing - TOMORROW! -
Happy Memorial Day! Please remember that today is a day to remember the sacrifices of our Armed Forces and their families. So when you are having that hotdog and drinking that Bud having a great time with your family and friends say a prayer or give a toast to those that are doing without a member of their clan today. God Bless America!

Just a thank you to those on this blog who donated supplies at the parade today. It was a great success in that we collected approx. 75lbs that will be the beginning of a shipment that will go to Iraq later this summer after I hold a full day fundraiser in June at a location to be announced. this shipment will go to a soldier with local ties.
Terrence Wilkin is a second Lieutenant with the 3rd Infantry Division, 2nd Brigade, 3-7th Cavalry based in Fort Stewart, Savannah called Rock of the Marne. He is the soon to be son in-law of James & Sijtje DeSimone who marched with us today. Terrence is engaged to Ineke DeSimone, their daughter. Ineke and her parents live in Rowayton and we are lucky that I got a phone call from Sijtje asking me how she and her family could could get involved in sending care packages to their soon to be son in-law’s platoon. Terrence is stationed in Iraq and the 2nd brigade has 3,500 to 4,000 soldiers. It’s great when we can do something like this for locals as well as those we don’t know but are fighting for us each and every day.
Again, Thank you for the generous donations. -
Eight more soldiers killed in Iraq yesterday, on Memorial Day. How ironic. That’s 3,454 since the start of the war in 2003. If you look at yearly averages, that means by next Memorial Day, we’ll have 864 more dead soldiers to mourn. What a tragic waste.

Joanne: Thanks for posting about the adopt-a-platoon program. Is there a place or location where people can drop off donations before your June event?
-
Turf-If anyone would like to donate, they can e-mail me at jtromano1@yahoo.com and I will make arrangements to pick up the donations. I am right now working out a drop location and will announce it shortly. Thanks again everyone!

Itsrediculous-I appologize to those who did not know about the float but it was in all the newspapers over the last week. I always advertise to get the best turnout. Also, I stand corrected on what we gathered yestaerday, it was well over 100 lbs. about 40 bags full including letters from area kids. to me that was a great thing when kids take time to wwrite, it means the world to the soldiers.

Wow Joanne, I better you DOUBLE the amount next year - I’ve been spreading the word, and I made a note on my calendar next year to remind my neighbors a week in advance! It would be great if we could get an Adopt-a-Platoon discount the week before the parade at CVS, Rite-Aid, Walgreen, etc and then people could shop there for the donation. I even got the Silly String there!
Thanks again for all you do!
