Norwalk: Breaking News

After the common council meeting I spoke briefly to the Mayor about several issues. He has heard from many citizens concerns about the the backlog of ordinance violations that in in the court system, which include items that range from illegal apartments to noise violations. He hopes to work with the ordinance committee on new ordinances that will enable the city to file tax liens immediately upon issuing a violation. Putting teeth into enforcement is always a good thing.

Mayor Moccia also wanted to let the blog readers know that he has recently purchased a condo in Norwalk. Despite the rumors that he resides, or has resided at the Norwalk Inn, he said quite firmly that it was a rumor. He did say that he enjoyed a good morning cup of coffee at the Inn, and with free refills it was a bargain. Diane Cece confirmed that.

I also learned that news12 was very interested in the runaway sheep grazing through Norwalk. Mayor Moccia said he has considered putting up “No ewe turn” signs to help capture the animal.

Lastly, it’s been reported that Bruce Kimmel has changed his registration from Democrat to Unaffiliated because of issues relating to the BOE. This should make things more interesting, and certainly reflects a bold statement about the direction of the remaining BOE Democrats.

I think there are a lot of little things that go without official notice, i.e. at citation of some sort.

A famous New York City mayor really had an impact on crime and violence a few years ago by telling his police department to ticket those who run red lights and stop signs, double park, litter and etc. His theory, which seems to have worked quite well, was simply to clean up the most basic of violations and the bigger things will begin to diminish - it worked.

I was in the Washington Street post office one day talking with one of Norwalk’s female police officers. There are signs prohibiting “U” turns there. A gentleman got in his car and as we watched through the window, he made a “U” turn. I pointed out to the officer that he had just done this (her cruiser was parked in the space in front of where he had been parked) and to my disbelief, she responded, “I would probably have done the same thing.”

This may not reflect the attitude of all of our police force, but that was unacceptable to my way of thinking and causes me to wonder about the rest of the force.

The “no ewe turn” comment sparked this I suppose, but . . .

That is an example. The noise violations are another. The over-occupancy limit apartments are another. The list goes on and part of it is that even the citizenery tends to look the other way unless it affects them directly. I think this has to do with not getting an appropriate response from people who SHOULD do something about it when complaints are filed.

I really believe that our police force should be more active in enforcing ALL of the laws, ALL of the time.

“Broken windows” has been largely discredited — crime in NYC under Giuliani dropped far more due to an upturn in lower- and middle-income economic and employment conditions than due to increased prosecution of minor crimes.
