Not so long ago when I was at the Trumbull mall I noticed this great exhibit of sculptures made entirely from canned food. Not being inquisitive enough, I simply marveled how cool it was and that was that. Today I found out what was behind all those canned masterpieces. The AIA CT, more formally known as A Chapter of The American Institute of Architects, has organized this event to raise awareness architecture in the schools. I asked about Norwalk, and sadly no school form Norwalk was participating. From their PDF:
At the Connecticut Event, Architects team up with local schools. The students are mentored by the design
professionals during the planning and construction of these gigantic structures made entirely
from full cans of food. At the close of the competition all of the food collected is donated to local Connecticut food banks for distribution to emergency feeding programs. AIA Connecticut has worked in conjunction with local Food Banks to hold this event for the last five years.
But they’d love to see Norwalk participate next year. Here’s a link to more info about the program. There are great pictures too. The sculptures are on display at the Hartford Convention Center, they are building tonight. An awards ceremony is being held Thursday May 17th.
